How to flash the prefix Xiaomi Mi Box S / 3/4 to the global one with Russian
“How to flash Mi Box S / 3/4?”. an important question for users who face such a need. Detailed instructions are described below.
Mi Box firmware manual
For global firmware, you must prepare a USB cable in advance. Some craftsmen, in order not to spend money on purchasing a cable, look for old samples, solder them and use them in the future.
Use the following aLGorithm of actions:
If you have any questions or complaints. let us know
- connect by a simple principle. red to red, black to black;
- disassemble the attachment with gentle movements;
- remove the protective layer from the board;
- for further recovery, take a PC, launch UBT and select the previously downloaded firmware;
- add checkboxes as in the photo;
- connect the cable to the set-top box (MDZ-16-AB) and to the computer port, hold down the testpoint;
- connect the power;
- wait for the system to complete the firmware;
- wait a few minutes until the system processes the data.
Upon completion, the strip will turn green. Connect the set-top box to your TV and test the results. Please note that the first connection takes some time.
Features of the
The complexity of the firmware is that Xiaomi Mi Box s / 3/4 runs on Android TV 8.1. (Oreo is the eighth version of the Android mobile operating system).
Compared to regular Android, the new version:
- does not have a navigation bar and status bar;
- only those programs that are adapted for Android TV are displayed on the home screen;
- has a global voice search in installed programs / Google Assistant;
- has unique features;
- the interface (theme) is adapted for the use of Google services and remote control;
- supports Google Cast (ChromeCast).
The essence of the Miui firmware (based on the Android operating system) is to make the operation as easy as possible for the user. If the user begins to simplify the process even more. try to control from the phone, etc. then lags often occur. The complexity of management also lies in the fact that the developers did not take into account the possibility of localization into Russian. It is not fully implemented. Only general data have been translated. Adjust the screen, and the sound will have to be in English. The firmware uses a 64-bit kernel version 4.9.61. If you experience any glitches after updating the firmware, it’s best to do a factory reset and start over.

HELLO! I ACCIDENTALLY DID NOT REMOVE THE CHECK WHEN I FLASHED Mi box s and it stopped seeing the remote control
Appearance and interfaces
Outwardly, the prefix has the shape of a stick, often called a “whistle” by the people, but to me it looks more like a USB flash drive on steroids. The design of the case combines glossy and matte plastic, on the front side there is a large Mi logo.
HDMI connector is covered with a protective cap.
Zen-style design on the end. In principle, all this does not really matter, because the device will be hidden behind the TV, but the device looks nice.
On the reverse side. technical information and model name MDZ-24-AA
On one of the sides. micro USB for power supply and that’s basically all. No more connectors. Internet connection is carried out exclusively via WI-FI, and installation of applications is possible only from the Internet. Considering that there is a cut-down Android TV market here, this can confuse the average user. How to put your favorite HD Videobox if it is not in the market and you cannot connect a USB flash drive or memory card? Very simply, and a little later I will show how.
I also want to draw your attention to the size of the stick. To say that he is petite is to say nothing.
Physically, he’s barely larger than a regular lighter.
But in identifying the components, disassembly did not help us in any way. Everything is covered with metal screens: processor, memory, WI-FI module. Only a tiny radiator protrudes proudly from the metal armor.
MI TV remote issue with Google Assistant.
The reverse side is the same. It is not entirely clear why this was done, because logically, this only worsens heat transfer. How much? It is not known, because Xiaomi simply decided not to install a temperature sensor. The less you know the better you sleep. In defense, I will say that overheating, reboots or freezes were not noticed during a month of use, after all, the Amlogic Y series of processors was developed specifically for such sticks and the heat dissipation there is insignificant.
Packaging and equipment
The Mi TV Stick comes in a bright, colorful box listing the officially supported services like Netflix, Prime Video, Youtube, Twitch, etc. Separately, we see a note about the supported resolution Full HD 1920×1080. For 4K TVs, it’s better to pay attention to older models, for example Mi Box S 4K.
Inside, everything is laid out in the designated places and fixed.
Included with the stick are: remote control, micro USB cable, power supply, HDMI extension cable and various documentation.
A 5V / 1A power supply is needed if your TV does not have USB power or the USB output current is lower than 1A.
For example, I have 2 TVs. Full HD 40 inch Samsung, which has a USB port with 1A (labeled HDD 5V / 1A). Here I just plug the stick into HDMI and power it from USB. Everything is hidden behind the TV, controlled by one remote control and does not require an additional outlet.
I also have a small LG HD TV in the kitchen and its USB only outputs 0.5A (there is a mark on the case), so if I used a stick with it, then I would need to connect the supplied power supply.
Another useful thing in the kit is an HDMI extension cable. Sometimes the HDMI connectors on the TV are slightly recessed and the stick may not enter due to the wider body than a simple cable.
Just plug the stick into the adapter, and connect it to the TV.
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick review: an advanced smart TV for your TV
Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is an entry-level Android TV box for HD and Full HD TVs. She is able to breathe a second life into an outdated TV that does not have smart TV functions or significantly expand them, if we talk about TVs on the operating systems Tizen (Samsung), WebOS (LG), VIDA (Hisence) and the like. The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is equipped with the open Android TV 9 operating system, thanks to which thousands of free applications are available that can be installed both from the Play Market and from third-party resources (by downloading and installing the APK file). In the review, I will tell you in detail about all the features of the set-top box and show you how to set it up correctly in order to squeeze the absolute maximum out of it, without resorting to complex actions.
video version of the review
- The set-top box has a working system autoframe and you can use it in applications that support it, for example Smart Youtube, Perfect Player or Vimu Player.
- The set-top box has been certified by google and supports widevine l1, which allows you to watch licensed services like Netflix or PrimeVideo, which are already preinstalled in the system.
- The set-top box has a built-in Chromecast, which works out of the box and allows you to broadcast video to the set-top box from other devices, and also adds the interaction of the set-top box with a smartphone.
- The set-top box comes with an advanced bluetooth remote that supports voice input.
- The compact size allows you to take the console with you on vacation, on vacation, to the country. Plug into a free HDMI connector and the TV gets smarter before our eyes. In addition, she does not need to allocate space on the shelf and most often she does not even need additional power, because she can be powered simply from the TV.

Testing and configuring applications
Perhaps the most popular application for watching movies online. A huge database of films that is collected from all over the Internet.
Most movies are in normal 1080p or 720p quality.
You also need to install a video player to watch movies. The best video player right now is VIMU Player. It’s fast, easy to use and supports auto-frame rate.
Choose a movie, launch it and enjoy smooth video without Judder effect.
I also recommend the WINK app, which offers not only movies in the best quality, but also the best TV channels, including HD.
You can also watch movies in an alternative way, just through torrents (without downloading them). For these purposes, there are many applications, for example NUM, Kinotrend or the same HD Videobox, if you activate the Plus version in it (it costs a couple of bucks).
To watch movies from torrents, you need to install the TorrServe application, and in it install the latest server version (in the settings). But that is not all. Torrents load the hardware very heavily and with the default settings the set-top box just freezes. For torrents to play normally, you need to set the cache size to 100 megabytes in the settings, and the preload buffer size to 20 megabytes. In addition, you must have a stable and fast Internet connection, at least 20. 25 Mbps.
If you are a supporter of legal content, then please: Widevine L1 allows you to watch licensed streaming (streaming) video services like Netflix or PrimeVideo in FullHD resolution. Subscribe and enjoy high quality movies and TV shows in excellent quality.
With the movie sorted out, let’s go to Youtube, the official version of which supports video in quality up to 1080p / 60 fps. Unfortunately, the standard client does not support afterframe, but you can install an alternative Smart Youtube, which has an autoframe (fractional frequencies are also supported), and the quality is not limited to Full HD. Here you can run videos even in 2K, but the 4K stick no longer pulls.
And of course, IPTV television. I have been using Edem TV (now called ILOOK TV) for several years, where hundreds of TV channels are available per month, including HD quality. To watch IPTV, I use Perfect Player, which is even in the standard Android TV Play store.
It has an autoframe and channels are displayed with the correct frequency.
Playback of all channels is excellent, switching between channels for about 2 seconds.
It is stripped down in everything and works quickly, and the controls are adapted to the console. If you need to find information on the Internet or read the news, this is a good solution.
And of course, voice search works in the console. With its help, you can quickly find the desired movie, just by saying its title. Or find out some information, such as the weather for the coming days. Voice search works well, the system accurately recognizes the request, even if the remote is located at arm’s length.
System setup and basic features
Before us is the classic Android TV 9 system without any modifications or changes. On the main screen, the top row is occupied by application shortcuts that you choose and customize their sequence.
Below are the app feeds with suggested content that you can launch directly from the home screen. Everything is simple and as convenient as possible for use on a TV.
He has the ability to work with cloud storage, such as Google Drive. You just download the necessary applications on your computer or even your smartphone and drop them into the Google drive folder. And from the console, go to your own Google drive and install them calmly. Thus, I installed HD Videobox, Wink, TorrServe and other necessary applications.
Another feature related to the use of Android TV: shortcuts for applications that are not adapted to the system will not be displayed in the “menu” section and can only be found through the settings and the item “all applications”. This is of course not convenient, so you can simply additionally install HAL Launcher from the market, which will display all installed applications. over, the launcher opens only by pressing a shortcut and does not interfere with the operation of the main system in any way.
As you can see, you can install absolutely any application and fully use the prefix. Now let’s look at the system settings. By the way, the system supports OTA updates and periodically receives them, where the manufacturer finalizes the firmware. Even during the initial setup, I received a notification on the main screen about a newer firmware version, after which I immediately updated it.
Let’s look at the settings section, everything here is quite simple and straightforward. There is a section where you can set up a WI-FI connection and immediately note that the 5 GHz range is supported, which provides higher data transfer speeds compared to 2.4 GHz. There is also Bluetooth, which, in addition to connecting the remote control, can be used to transmit sound to wireless headphones or acoustics.
In the information about the device, we see that the device is running Android 9 and includes security updates for July 2020. The electronic serial number of Netflix is also indicated, let me remind you that we have it licensed here and officially supported.
- Now about the important thing. The stick supports autoframe, which is activated in supported applications. It switches the refresh rate of your TV’s picture according to the frequency of the video being played, which ensures that every frame is played smoothly and evenly. Also, the frequency and resolution can be changed manually through the settings.
- The second point is the working CEC, which allows you to control the set-top box and the TV using one remote control. In my case, it looks like this: I turn on the TV using the standard remote control, power is supplied to the USB and the set-top box turns on automatically. I can control the set-top box with the same remote control, select and start a movie, and after watching, by pressing one button, turn off two devices at once.
- Well, sound settings. If your TV supports DTS or Dolby Digital sound or allows it to be output to external speakers, then the set-top box will be able to reproduce it.
Another big plus is the built-in Chromecast technology. With it, you can view photos or videos from your smartphone on the TV screen, listen to music, and broadcast supported applications, such as YouTube or Google photos. Even with screensavers that turn on after a period of inactivity, you can use Chromecast and for example broadcast a family photo album. And then there are games with Chromecast support.
If you look at the technical specifications, then the question arises: how does this console work at all? Only 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, of which only 5 GB is available to the user. Let’s start in order: the Android TV operating system is much easier for hardware than full-fledged Android. Everything that is not needed for the console is cut out here and therefore less memory is needed for its operation. Benchmarks show that the system itself uses only 400-500 MB of memory, and the rest is given to applications. Well, since we do not use multitasking on the stick and we do not need to open several applications at once, this volume is quite enough. With internal storage, everything is also simple: no one will install games here, download movies too, and this is enough to install all applications. Having installed all my usual list of applications for testing the set-top box and viewing various content, I did not use even half of the free space.
For the sake of fairness, I note that the console works slower than its older and more powerful counterparts, and this is felt in almost everything: loading, launching applications, drawing interface elements and animation. If you have previously used powerful consoles, then this will be very noticeable. In video playback, there is absolutely no difference, because decoding occurs at the hardware level and the set-top box can play video encoded in modern HEVC, H264 and VP9 codecs. Including HDR.
There is no point in running some benchmarks like Antutu, because in fact, in front of a media player. But the speed of the Internet via WI-FI is very important here, especially since a wired connection is simply not possible. The good news is support for dual-band operation: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and in the second case, there is support for the ac standard. In ideal conditions, where the router is in the TV room, at a distance of several meters, and the speed is not limited by the operator, I received a data transfer rate of 135 Mbps in the 5 GHz range and 48 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz range. In my real conditions, the router is in the corridor, 2 walls from the TV, which is in the back room and is connected at a frequency of 5 GHz. The speed drops to 68 Mbps for downloading and 95 Mbps for uploading. This is more than enough to watch any Full HD content online, so the set-top box has no problems with the Internet. According to publicly available information, even a stable speed of 10. 12 Mbps is enough to view content in Full HD quality.
The remote is great here. Minimum buttons, compact size, bluetooth signal transmission and support for voice input (built-in microphone).
The buttons are large, well distinguishable tactilely and pressed with a distinct click. In the center are navigation and system buttons, on top. power and voice search, on the bottom. volume. There are also Netflix and Prime Video quick launch buttons.
The remote control fits perfectly in the hand. In a couple of days you will use it without looking at the buttons, because the controls are intuitive and you will quickly remember the location of all the main elements. Since signal transmission is carried out via bluetooth protocol, direct visibility of the stick is not required. The main condition is at a distance of no more than 10 meters, and so. even if you control from under the blanket, the prefix will react to every button press instantly.
On the back there is information that the model of the remote control is called XMRM-006 and it can be purchased separately on aliexpress.
Outwardly, it is very similar to my favorite mecool console, which I have been using for several years. The differences, though minimal, are there. Firstly, my remote control does not have additional Netflix and Prime Video buttons, and secondly, the power and voice search buttons are placed horizontally, not vertically.
Well, the shape is a little different. The mecool has a more rounded back, while the Xiaomi has a flat one.
As I said at the beginning of the article, Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is an entry-level Android TV set-top box for HD and Full HD TVs, the only task of which is to play multimedia content and it does it quite well. The stick is not expensive at all and can “add brains” to an old, but still necessary TV without Smart TV. It is also a great option for a kitchen, summer cottage, or a portable device that you plan to take with you. The shortcomings of the model are quite obvious. it is weak hardware and only 1 GB of RAM, which makes the stick slower in comparison with the older models. But if this is not a problem for you, then Xiaomi Mi TV Stick is a good choice, especially if Honor has its advantages: working autoframe, Google certification and licensed Netflix, built-in Chromecast, support for CEC control, Android TV with voice search, cool Bluetooth remote. And of course, the compact size and the ability to power the stick simply from a USB TV.
The most common circumstances due to which voice search does not work on Mi Box:
- internal mechanical failure that occurred due to a strong impact or fall of the device;
- system error;
- lack of internet;
- incorrect assistant settings;
- lack of updates.
Why voice search does not work on Mi Box S / 4/3: reasons, how to fix?
Why is voice search not working on Mi Box? This question arises for every second user who uses the prefix. Voice Assistant is a convenient and modern way to give commands, change settings and control device operation. Half of the owners of Mi Boxes use this method of interaction with the tuner at home, so it becomes very inconvenient if, for some reason, there is a refusal to respond. In this article, we will investigate the causes and look for effective solutions to this problem.
What to do if voice search stops working
It all depends on what problem specifically blocks your work. If it was not possible to determine it “by eye”, then proceed in the following order:
- go to the settings to check the debug options;
- make sure that the device and its individual components do not need updating and flashing;
- visually inspect if everything is connected correctly, and if there is no damage.
Another important thing without which the audio assistant will not work is the network connection. Therefore, check the contact with the tuner, and then reboot the equipment and try to make the voice request again. If after that it did not begin to function normally, then we advise you to find specialized specialists and contact them for mechanical diagnostics of the device. If you manage to do this yourself at home, do not forget that when reconnecting it is better to reset the old parameters and re-register them manually.
The problem with the lack of input can be trivial and hide in the unpressed button on the control panel, which is responsible for activating the function. Main reasons:
- poor radio signal;
- internet outages;
- lack of the installed language pack (the technician does not understand the request);
- the new firmware version caused an interruption in the system and disabled the function.
