How to update to Windows 10 on any Lumia smartphone with a memory card
The Windows 10 Technical Preview update released yesterday is not available to all Lumia smartphones, but only to selected models: 63x, 730 and 830. Microsoft explains this limitation by some complicated manipulation of the partitions of the drive.
Nevertheless, as we remember, at the presentation of the mobile version of Windows 10, Joe Belfiore showed some innovations using the Lumia 1520 smartphone. Today we also learned that an active member of the XDA Developers forum, Jeremy Sinclair, managed to install the update on this smartphone. This means that the restrictions are not so strict and there are no technical obstacles to install Windows 10 on Lumia smartphones. We found the corresponding instruction on a Polish site dedicated to Windows Phone.
Instructions for upgrading Lumia smartphones to Windows 10.
To install Windows 10, you’ll need any model of Nokia or Microsoft Lumia smartphone that runs on Windows Phone 8 or 8.1 and has a slot for a memory card. In addition, you need a computer with the SDK for Windows Phone 8 installed.0. You can download it from here.
Register as a Windows Phone developer on this site and install the Preview for Developers app on your smartphone’s memory card. You will need to hack this application.
Download CustomPFD application from the forum of XDA Developers and install it on the memory card using Windows Phone Power Tools.
Download the CustomWPSystem app. Install it in the internal memory of your smartphone.
Find Metro Commander file manager in Windows Phone marketplace and install it.
Copy the CustomPFD file.xap to any folder on your smartphone’s memory card.
Install the WPSystem Folder Unlocker application in the internal memory of your smartphone.
Open CustomWPSystem, select “Preview for Developers,” and then “CustomPFD.xap.”and click “apply xap.” You will see an error message, but ignore it. Close the CustomWPSystem.
Open the WPSystem Folder Unlocker and unlock access to the WPSystem folder.
Install File Manager application from Windows Phone Market and open it. Find the Apps directory in D:/WPSystem and rename it whatever you like (for example Appx).
Close File Manager and launch Metro Commander.
Now that the Preview for Developers app is hacked, you need to go to the registry edit that will trick the system and allow the smartphone to disguise itself as Nokia Lumia 630.
Launch Preview for Developers and edit the registry. To do this: change value of PhoneManufacturerModelName key in HKLM\SYSTEM\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo branch to RM-976_1161; PhoneFirmwareRevision in HKLM\SYSTEM\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo to 02040.00019.14484.24002; PhoneMobileOperatorName in HKLM\SYSTEM\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo at 000-PL.
Reboot your smartphone, open the Windows Insider app if you have it installed. If not, install it and register as a Windows Insider. After that, check in the app to see if a Windows 10 update is available for you. If everything is done correctly, the update will be downloaded and installed.
Rolling back from Windows 10 back to Windows Phone 8.1 you can use Windows Phone Recovery Tool, which is available at Microsoft.
What are the perks of using Windows Mobile 10?
Overall, after upgrading the older Lumia 730, it feels like a new phone: it works more lively, the UX is smarter, and the Skype and OneDrive integration is top notch. Is it even worth upgrading to Windows Phone 10? Definitely yes, especially if your device is on the official list. With the installation of 10, you not only get an improved design, but also a great integration with Microsoft Office and the latest versions of its applications (which are not available in 8.1).
Truth be told, if the Astoria project (the ability to install iOS and Android apps on Windows), was still active, I could safely say that Windows 10 is a great alternative to Android. But, if you’re not too worried about the lack of some apps in the Windows market, then 10 will definitely make you happy.

There were no viruses, even though it was Windows
It’s not Android.
Windows Phone, as I said before, was a closed system. It was a lot like iOS, at least in terms of security. Considering that the applications could be downloaded strictly from the Microsoft Store, it was impossible to catch a virus.
All of the software was in its own sandbox, so there was no way that it could interact with system resources. Again, hello iOS! Against the Android background of Windows Phone was an island of tranquility.
So, people who wanted to protect their data but couldn’t afford an iPhone, would buy an HTC or Nokia with Windows Phone and never worry about it.
Microsoft will update its Lumia smartphones
As we know the old guys like Lumia 520, 620, 720, 820 and others came out 3-4 years ago. A lot has changed since then, especially the “stuffing” of smartphones. In turn, the aforementioned models run on hardware that is obsolete by today’s standards. In addition, their amount of RAM is, shall we say, small. Yes, even half a gigabyte is enough for fast and lag-free operation of Windows Phone 8 smartphone.1. However, the situation with Windows 10 Mobile is somewhat different. This OS is more exacting to the hardware, because it has new functions and features, which in turn require a more powerful processor, more RAM and more.
And just yesterday, walking around on YouTube, I came across a video, which was made by our colleagues, the guys from “Onetile”. The essence of this video is to show users why Microsoft excluded from the list of updates to Windows 10 Mobile old smartphones from the Lumia line. As an example was taken smartphone Nokia Lumia 520. one of the most popular Lumia-phones around the world.
After watching the video from beginning to end, I realized the reason why Microsoft refused to update older smartphones. In my opinion it is better for old devices to run on an old version of the operating system, but they will work without lags, glitches and brakes, rather than the owners of smartphones will face solid brakes. I have several old Lumia smartphones myself (720, 1320 and 1020). And let’s be honest, WP 8.1 works much faster on them. In general, watch the video, I think its essence will explain why Microsoft does not update old smartphones Lumia 520, 620, 720, 820, 920 and others. to Windows 10 Mobile.
It’s happening! Windows 10 Mobile update available for Lumia smartphones
Microsoft has finally officially announced that Windows 10 Mobile has started rolling out to smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1. We’ve been waiting for this day long enough and just yesterday the official blog of the company announced the release of Windows 10 for smartphones. At the same time, we would like to point out that not all smartphones from Lumia lineup are able to download the new software.
To date, owners of the following smartphones can download the update to Windows 10 Mobile: Lumia 430, 435, 532, 535, 540, 635 (with 1 GB of RAM), 640, 640 XL, 735, 830, as well as 930. As you have already noticed, this list does not include models such as: Lumia 520, 525, 530, 720, 820, 920, 925, 1020, 1320 and 1520. It seems that for these smartphones the update will come a little later. In other words, the software corporation has divided getting an upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile into two parts. In the first wave of updates are the newer models of devices, while older phones will receive the update later.
Windows 10 update for smartphones available starting yesterday. At the same time, we would like to note that a specific timeline for the new software is not specified. This is influenced by a variety of factors. For example, the update is distributed depending on the region, as well as the device’s tethering to the carrier (meaning carrier models).
In addition, in order to install Windows 10 Mobile on your smartphone. you will need to download a special application called Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor. You can download it for free from the app store. Also note that the above-mentioned application serves to notify the user about the availability of updates for a particular smartphone model.
