When a voltage (pulse) is passed through the LED of an OLED screen, it starts to glow. An impulse appeared. the LED turned on, the impulse disappeared. the LED went out. In a real AMOLED screen, the number of such pulses can be 200 per second (they say “frequency 200 Hz”) or 250, and maybe 500! It all depends on the manufacturer.
But how do we lower the brightness by 50% now? It is enough just, without changing the voltage, to reduce the duration (width) of the pulse by 2 times. At the same time, the frequency is preserved, that is, each new pulse from our example will still pass through 0.25 seconds, but the length of the pulse itself will no longer be 0.25 seconds, but about 0.12 seconds (2 times shorter):
It turns out that the pulses continue to arrive every 0.25 seconds, but only half of this time the LED is on, and the second half is off. This will lead to the fact that we will perceive the brightness 2 times lower than the original.
If you need to make the minimum brightness, you can generally reduce the pulse width from our example to 0.01 seconds. This will lead to the fact that most of the time the screen will simply not light up: it turns on for 0.01 seconds, and then turns off for 0.24 seconds, then everything repeats again.
