Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is not even an S-version in the manner of Apple, which repeated the predecessor in design, but was very different in filling, this is an even easier upgrade format. Compared with the “regular” Mi MIX 2, the novelty received a fresh Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 hardware platform and an improved rear camera. The latter is especially true. the camera was literally the Achilles heel of the Mi MIX 2. The design has also slightly changed. primarily due to the new, dual camera.
But in our opinion, it’s not enough for a full review of these improvements, so we decided to combine the useful with the useful and in this case abandon the standard review, talking at once about the key improvements of Mi MIX 2S and comparing it with competitors, on the one hand, and on the other. about the fresh Android P operating system, which was previously “rolled” onto the smartphone. Naturally, it is impossible to seriously measure battery life or evaluate the quality of shooting without the original software in this format. But some conclusions can be made. the first part of the material will be devoted to this.
The second, more important part in this case, will completely remain with the beta version of the fresh Google OS.
⇡ #Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S
When Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 comes out, it will almost certainly get either a cutout in the middle of the screen, which became trendy after Apple decided to use it in the iPhone X, or a retractable camera in the manner of the Vivo NEX. the struggle to completely get rid of the frames around the display is stern and ruthless. Mi MIX 2 has its own version, both elegant and awkward: the front camera lens is tucked away in the lower right corner. as a result, the smartphone looks very good (better than with a cutout. although we seem to be used to it already), but use a selfie The camera is uncomfortable. In Mi MIX 2S, this problem has not been solved in any way, all design changes have affected only the rear panel.
Here we see the doubled block of the camera, moving from the center to the corner of the case while maintaining the general style. it protrudes above the case and is edged with gold metal. The back cover is ceramic, it looks great in photographs and immediately after purchase, but it is instantly blurred and easily scratched; it remains to use the case and console itself with the fact that today all smartphones of a serious level are plagued by such problems.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S. information about the filling according to the CPU-Z application
In general, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S looks original and even (at first) beautiful, but its design, of course, needs to be updated (the frames can be made even thinner for the sake of fashion) and to get rid of awkwardness with the location of the front camera. Also, of course, I would like the device to be at least a little narrower. my hand gets tired from long work with such a “shovel”. The one-handed use of Mi MIX 2S, of course, is out of the question. but this is already the expected situation, no one even tries to bet on compactness today. She will lose anyway.
At the same time, the navigation panel has been moved to the screen, and the fingerprint scanner is located on the rear panel. these are extremely relevant solutions that are fully consistent with the spirit of the times and with the requirements of both Android Oreo and the upcoming Android P with its minimalistic navigation.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S has a 5.99-inch LCD with a resolution of 2160 × 1080 pixels (with a pixel density of 403 ppi). This is exactly the same screen that we saw in Mi MIX 2, you can’t say something new about it: an ordinary IPS-matrix with good viewing angles and mediocre contrast, which is well-tuned and can give odds to almost any smartphone in terms of color rendering accuracy. But in a dispute with OLED displays. like what is placed in the OnePlus 6 that directly competes with the hero of this material. the Mi MIX 2S screen certainly loses.
Another very controversial point when comparing with OnePlus 6 is the lack of a mini-jack. Although there is not even an excuse for this in the form of full moisture and dust protection (which, however, can also be provided while maintaining the analog audio jack). there is only IP54 splash protection. Nothing has changed in terms of sound quality through an adapter or without wires. Mi MIX 2S demonstrates an ordinary, but not a shameful level.
But the performance lag of Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is no longer. compare with anyone. It uses the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform. the same as in Xiaomi Mi 8, OnePlus 6, HTC U12, Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium and all other top smartphones that are not made by Apple, Huawei, Samsung or Meizu.
Benchmark results are higher. I note that in testing we had a version of Mi MIX 2S with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB non-volatile. This is the youngest configuration. there are also options with 8 GB of RAM, and with 128/256 GB of flash. But there is no memory card slot. in the corresponding tray you can find only two recesses for nano-SIM cards. Qualcomm’s new platform brings Category 18 LTE support with theoretical data rates of up to 1.2 Gb / s. all in the highest rank. At the same time, the smartphone does not have an awkward shortage of supported ranges. it works with the network stably and confidently.
A key improvement to the S version compared to its predecessor is the main camera. At the same time, the front camera is the same. 5 megapixels, without autofocus, and even located unsuccessfully. But in the main thing everything has changed: instead of a single module, a double one is installed here, working “in iPhone mode”, when the second camera is needed to create a double zoom. But the main advantage of the camera is not this, but the change in the main module: there is another sensor (also 12-megapixel, but already more photosensitive, Sony IMX363. the pixel size increased from 1.25 μm to 1.4 μm), and a faster aperture optics (ƒ/ 1.8 instead ƒ/ 2.0). And despite the fact that I will not undertake to fully evaluate the quality of shooting of Mi MIX 2S. in our device there was no basic software for Xiaomi and even the optical (more precisely, hybrid) zoom did not work. the difference even when taking “raw” images using the basic Android P applications compared to its predecessor is obvious. At least the new “mix” can be removed not only during the day, but also at night. even the optical stabilizer did not help the previous one. So the device has lost the Achilles heel and with its current price already really seems to be a decent offer.
