How to Broadcast Video from Computer to TV

4.5 Rating: 2 (Yours: )

There are many reasons why you might want to connect your laptop or PC to your TV. For example, if you want to show a presentation or watch TV shows, movies, and video clips from Netflix, KinoSearch, or YouTube. In this case one of the easiest variants is to connect your device to TV with the help of special programs, wires or WI-FI.

If you need to preliminarily remove unnecessary fragments from the clip or convert the file into another format, use a simple and convenient program for video processing.

Here’s how to transfer video from your computer to your TV: let’s take a look at the most popular ways.

How to connect your phone to the TV through HDMI

This option allows you to use your TV as an external display while playing games, watching films and surfing the Internet. The picture from your mobile device is mirrored, which means that the TV shows everything that happens on the screen of your smartphone.

Depending on the connector of the phone to connect you need the appropriate adapter or cable. It will have an HDMI connector on one side and a microUSB, Lightning, or USB-C connector on the other. Your device drains quickly in picture mode, so adapters usually have a connector for charging.

Before you buy a USB-C adapter, make sure your smartphone supports picture output.

What to do

  • Connect your smartphone and TV with a compatible cable. If you are using an adapter, plug it into the gadget and connect a regular HDMI cable from your TV to the adapter.
  • Choose the HDMI connector on your TV as the input source.
  • The picture will automatically appear on your TV. If not, open your smartphone settings and change the screen resolution.

Transferring an image to your Android TV over Wi-Fi (Miracast)

Before you begin, be sure to turn on the Wi-Fi on your Android phone or tablet, otherwise the following steps will show that wireless screens are not available.

To transfer an image from your phone to your TV may require slightly different steps depending on your Android version and smartphone brand, but the following options are usually available:

  • In the notification area, find the Broadcast icon, and after searching for available televisions, click on the one you want and wait for the broadcast to start.
  • If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, find the Smart View icon in the notification area, tap on it, wait for the TV to be found, tap on it, and wait for the broadcast to start.
  • Go to Settings. Screen. Broadcast (or Miracast Wireless Screen), and your TV will be listed (it should be on at this point). Click on it and wait for the connection to complete. On some TVs, you will need to “allow” to connect (you will be prompted on the TV screen).
  • Open the list of quick actions in the notification area of Android, select the “Broadcast” button (may not exist), after finding your TV, click on it.

That’s all, if everything went well, in a short time you will see the screen of your smartphone or tablet on the TV (in the photo below the camera app is open on the device and the image is duplicated on the TV).

You may also find additional information helpful:

  • Connection is not always successful the first time (sometimes it takes a long time to connect and nothing happens), but if everything that is required is enabled and supported, it is usually possible to achieve a positive result.
  • Image and sound transfer speeds may not be the best, you will not be able to play most games this way.
  • If you run some video on your phone and it transmits to the TV as a black screen (which can be the case with some players and protected content), it is better to use the transmission methods described further in the section with additional image transmission methods.
  • If you usually use the portrait (vertical) orientation of the screen, then turning on the automatic rotation and turning the device will make the image occupy the entire TV screen.

What are the possibilities of connecting your phone to the TV

The functions of the phone remain the same, only to perform some actions will now be more pleasant and comfortable:

  • Play your favorite games on a screen with a wide diagonal (you can additionally connect a Bluetooth keyboard or joystick to the TV to play comfortably);
  • to watch films, photos and other content;
  • Organize impressive presentations;
  • “surfing” the Internet;
  • To control the TV with the phone (it will be like a remote control).

How to connect your phone to the TV

Essentially, users have two criteria for connecting a smartphone to the TV. First, no wires; second, the phone has to be in an active state so that I can control it without problems. In principle, the request is fully satisfied with the Wi-Fi Direct function, which the author of AndroidInsider told earlier.Artem Sutyagin.

Wi-Fi Direct. It’s a wireless transfer protocol that allows you to share files regardless of whether you’re connected to the internet.

Let me tell you right away, this is the easiest way to connect your phone to TV. The only thing is that not all televisions support this technology. Fortunately, there are several other ways, which are not any worse.

Playing movies from your computer on your TV via Wi-Fi (DLNA)

For this, the most common way to connect your TV wirelessly, in addition to having a Wi-Fi module, you also need to have the TV itself connected to the same router (t.е. to the same network) as the computer or laptop on which you store videos and other materials (for TVs with Wi-Fi Direct support you can do without a router, just connect to the network created by TV). Hopefully, this is already the case, and no separate instructions are needed. the connection is made from the appropriate menu of your TV in the same way as the connection to Wi-Fi of any other device. See. a separate manual: How to set up DLNA in Windows 10.

The next point is to configure the DLNA server on your computer, or, more clearly, to share folders on it. Usually it is enough to have “Home” (Private) in the settings of the current network. By default, the folders “Videos”, “Music”, “Pictures” and “Documents” are publicly accessible (you can share a folder by right-clicking on it, selecting “Properties” and the “Access” tab).

One of the quickest ways to enable sharing is to open Windows Explorer, select “Network” and if you see the message “Network discovery and file sharing disabled”, click on it and follow the instructions.

If that message doesn’t follow, and instead displays computers on the network and media servers, you probably already have everything set up (it’s quite likely). If that doesn’t work, here are detailed instructions on how to set up a DLNA server in Windows 7 and 8.

Once DLNA is enabled, open your TV’s menu item to view the content of connected devices. On the Sony Bravia, you can go to the Home button and then select the section. Movies, Music or Pictures and watch the relevant content from your computer (Sony also has a program called Homestream, which simplifies everything I wrote). On LG televisions. SmartShare item, there you will also be able to see the content of shared folders, even if you don’t have SmartShare installed on your computer. For TV of other brands similar actions (and there are also their own programs) are required.

Additionally, if the DLNA connection is active, by right-clicking on the video file in Explorer (this is done on the computer) you can select the “Play to TV” menu item. Selecting this item will start wireless video streaming from your computer to the TV.

Note: even though the TV supports MKV movies, there is no “Play To” for these files in Windows 7 and 8, and they do not appear in the TV menu. A solution that works in most cases is to simply rename these files to AVI on the computer.

Connecting via Miracast

Miracast is a specification that completely replaces the HDMI cable. It allows you to stream any video file, regardless of the codec used. You do not need to be connected to the general Wi-Fi network.

To connect your smartphone to a Samsung TV, on some models you must first enable the function on the TV itself. To do this, we need to press “Source” on the remote control and activate the “Screen Mirroring.

If your TV model doesn’t require this step, you can skip straight to connecting your phone to TV.

Activate “Smart View” in the Quick access bar and choose your TV model.

Working in the TV-Cast app

  • Connect the TV and the smartphone to the same Wi-Fi access point.
