Samsung S4 Camera How Many Megapixels
As with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the camera modules of the new flagship smartphones Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are identical. At my disposal was the Samsung Galaxy S7, respectively, everything said about its camera is true for the Galaxy S7 edge.
Even before the release of the Samsung Galaxy S7, there were rumors that the smartphone could get a main camera with an enlarged matrix. Size 1/2 ”was indicated. Potentially, this could strongly distinguish the smartphone from its competitors, because at the moment the flagships use smaller matrices.
Why is the size of light-receiving matrices (sensors) of cameras important? Other things being equal, the larger the matrix, the higher the quality of the shot. But in smartphones, a large matrix is not so easy to use. For a larger matrix, a larger lens will also be required. In general, the camera module will turn out to be relatively large, and it will be difficult to fit in the elegant case of the smartphone. In addition, the cost of such a camera module will be higher.

But the rumors were not confirmed. the Samsung Galaxy S7 came with a light-receiving matrix of almost the same size (size 1 / 2.5 ”) as its predecessor Galaxy S6 (size 1 / 2.6”). The camera module installed here is Sony IMX260. You can find information that sensors of our own (Samsung) production can be used.
The “peephole” of the camera could not be made on a par with the rear panel, but now it is not so strong.
As before, the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy S7 is equipped with an optical image stabilization system, which cannot be controlled.
The lens has become a bit wider. the equivalent focal length in S7 is 26 mm (for S6. 28 mm). The lens aperture was slightly increased, and now it has a value of f: 1.7. This allows the matrix to receive more light, which positively affects the quality of shooting.
Of the innovations. a hybrid Dual Pixel autofocus system using phase autofocus. I must admit that earlier I had no complaints about the autofocus speed of the flagships of Samsung, but it seems that the new Samsung models in this regard have become even cooler.
A separate story with the resolution of the matrix of the main camera. The Galaxy S7 uses a 12-megapixel sensor. By the number of pixels, the novelty is inferior not only to the Galaxy S6 and S5, but even the Galaxy S4. Recall that S4 appeared in 2013.
The manufacturer, for its part, indicated that reducing the number of pixels allowed these pixels to be made larger, which positively affects the amount of received light. The pixel size of the matrix of the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy S7 is 1.4 μm.
For my part, I note that for the formation of the final image, the matrix size is more important than the pixel size. If we take matrices of the same size, then, ceteris paribus, the amount of light received by them will be identical, and this does not depend on the number of pixels and the size of each of them.
I recall a similar story with the top HTC smartphones, where a small number of pixels in the flagships was presented as an advantage and this was beaten precisely in connection with the large size of these pixels.
But if in the case of HTC, the resolution of the matrix was really low (4 megapixels), which significantly affected the detail of the pictures, then in this case I would call the number of pixels of the Samsung Galaxy S7 camera absolutely sufficient for such a device. Let it not bother you that there are fewer pixels than before. the difference in detail, if there is one, is almost imperceptible.
But reducing the number of pixels in a matrix can still be useful. When shooting in most cameras and smartphones, not all pixels are used to form a picture. Even modern processors are often not enough to process information from all pixels of multi-megapixel matrices, “resize” to the desired frame resolution, conversion and stream formation with several tens of frames per second. Unfortunately, manufacturers almost never indicate which gaps in pixels are used in certain modes. So, with a decrease in the number of pixels, the processor will need to process less information and it can be assumed that there will be fewer gaps or there will be none at all. This can positively affect the quality of the image.
Start the camera
The camera can be quickly started by double-clicking the center button, even from standby mode. It happens almost instantly. The device will be ready for shooting in a split second, which is very convenient. The function is not new and was previously seen on the Galaxy S6.
Just like the looks of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6, their shooting modes are similar. At the first glance at the Galaxy S7 camera mode interface, you might get the impression that there were no changes at all compared to the Galaxy S6. The structure of the menu, the placement of elements on the screen, the principle of increasing functionality by downloading branded extensions. all this went into the new model with virtually no changes.

Brand continuity is, of course, good, but, in my opinion, some kind of visual permutations and innovations would not hurt.
The aspect ratio of the Galaxy S7 camera’s matrix is 4: 3 (a typical ratio for smartphone camera matrices). Accordingly, when choosing full resolution, the image on the smartphone screen with a 16: 9 ratio will be “cropped” on the sides. To display a picture in full screen, you must select the appropriate mode (16: 9) for shooting, while the photo resolution will be a maximum of 9 megapixels. Inconsistency in the aspect ratio of the matrix and the screen is a common situation in smartphones. It is strange that this moment sometimes raises questions from users.
Functionality, as befits the flagship, is very good. There is a powerful burst shooting, HDR for photos ands, panorama, a mode with focus selection in the foreground or background after shooting, etc.

As indicated, the functionality can be further enhanced with new extensions that are downloaded from the Samsung brand market (requires a Samsung account). For example, through extensions, you can get the ability to create spherical panoramas. The function was once available in S5, but it wasn’t in S6 (perhaps this extension is now available for Galaxy S6).
Special attention deserves the manual shooting mode. At first glance, everything is the same as in the Galaxy S6 (sensitivity control, shutter speed, exposure metering mode, exposure compensation, manual autofocus, etc.), but there are some small but very important innovations.

First, in manual mode, information about the sensitivity value and shutter speed is displayed. Recall that the aperture in smartphones does not change and the value corresponds to the lens aperture value.
For those who are versed in shooting parameters, such a banal feature, which, by the way, is available even in the simplest cameras, can help a lot when shooting.

Secondly, support for RAW photography was added. I think once again you should not point out the advantages of shooting in this format.
When using the front camera, a number of effects are available aimed at improving the complexion, removing skin defects, body shaping, etc. It is logical, given that such cameras are most often used for selfies (self-portrait). No flash for front camera.
Samsung Galaxy S7 has very advanced capture capabilities. 4K-video, 1080p60 mode, slow motion. all this is here, as befits a modern high-end smartphone. In addition to electronic stabilization, you can activate electronic. In this case, the viewing angle will be reduced (part of the matrix is used for stabilization).
In some modes, not all functions and effects can be activated. The smartphone warns about this in the settings menu.

Please note that in slow motion mode, the Samsung Galaxy S7 shoots at a speed of 240 fps. (previously 120 fps), however, the quality noticeably suffers. What is missing?
With all the wealth of shooting capabilities and modes, the Samsung Galaxy S7 would not hurt some of the features that we have seen in different smartphones before.
For example, in the Galaxy S5 model, using burst shooting, it was possible to “cut” a moving object from a frame or to “replicate” a moving object throughout the frame.
Autofocus bracketing was encountered in smartphones in macro photography with the “assembly” of the final image with a large depth of sharp image space (depth of field). There is no such possibility.
Not enough and some more exotic features. For example, in Sony smartphones, there is the possibility of composing a frame while simultaneously shooting several devices (smartphones, cameras) at once.
How does it take off?
Of course, I would like to directly compare the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6, but we did not have such an opportunity.
Samsung Galaxy S7 was very pleased with the quality of shooting. Subjectively, he shoots very cool. The progress of smartphone cameras cannot be overlooked. This applies to both photos ands.
For posting pictures ands on social networks, even working in difficult conditions at the limit of sensitivity is quite satisfactory.
I will share some observations when working with the Samsung Galaxy S7.
You should not rely on selective focus mode. The camera often applies the effect very incorrectly (see screenshots).

You can do without this mode. Due to the high aperture ratio of the lens in combination with a relatively large matrix, large-scale DOF shooting is quite small, and it is possible to achieve natural, rather than programmed, blurring of the background (see below).
I did not really like the work of the Samsung Galaxy S7 in macro photography. The minimum shooting distance turned out to be quite large, which in combination with the use of a wide-angle lens gives not the best scale. The results were, let’s say, pretty good, but I expected more.

But I would call the possibility of selecting a focus object with tracking this object in the frame very useful. True, the function does not work in the “heavy” movie modes.
HDR is used very correctly. I specially picked up an example where the effect of turning on HDR noticeably transformed the picture.

Autofocus is really very fast and works well in low light. Refocusing from one object to another, from near to far when shooting movies is very fast. This is probably the best autofocus job we’ve seen among smartphones.. But there is a slight nuance. In 1080p60 mode (only in it), the autofocus speed for some reason noticeably decreased. Perhaps this is some kind of software flaw and it will be fixed in new firmware.
If there is insufficient lighting, the camera will warn the user with a special icon. over, the shutter speed can be set quite long. up to 1/5 s. For handheld shooting, even considering the stabilization system, this is a bit much. There is a likelihood of grease. However, such shots are taken at high sensitivity values and the requirements for their quality are not so strict.
The excellent results of the Samsung Galaxy S7 camera we showed were quite expected. Shooting quality is a traditional strength of Samsung’s top-end smartphones, and with this model you can see this again.
The camera features and a set of related functions are very rich. In my opinion, an important addition to this generation of Samsung flagship smartphones is the more advanced manual mode and the ability to shoot RAW.
Perhaps the manufacturer should have slightly changed the shooting mode interface. it painfully looks like the interface that Samsung smartphones of the past generation have.
