Reset Efi Password on Macbook Pro

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) may solve some problems related to power, battery, and other functions.

The SMC is responsible for managing the behavior associated with the following functions. If you encounter problems with any of these, you may need to reset the SMC.

  • Power, including power button and power to USB ports
  • Battery and Charging
  • Fans and other thermal management functions
  • Indicators or sensors, such as status light indicators (sleep state, battery charge status, etc.), sudden movement sensor, ambient light sensor and keyboard backlight
  • Behavior when opening and closing a laptop cover

Resetting SMC Settings on Computers with a T2 Processor

Before resetting the SMC, try the following:

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. Click power button and hold it for 10 seconds, then release the button.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then press power button, to turn on your Mac.

If the problem persists, reset the SMC by following these steps:

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. On the built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the keys below. The Mac may turn on.
    • Control on the left side of the keyboard
    • Option (Alt) on the left side of the keyboard
    • Shift on the right side of the keyboard
    • Keep holding all three keys for 7 seconds, then also press and hold power button. If your Mac is on, it will turn off when you hold down the keys.

    • Keep holding all four keys for another 7 seconds, then release them.
    • Wait a few seconds, then press power button, to turn on your Mac.

    Desktop computers with a T2 processor

    1. Turn off your Mac, then unplug the power cord.
    2. Wait 15 seconds, then plug the power cord back in.
    3. Wait 5 seconds, then press power button, to turn on your Mac.

    Reset SMC on other computers

    If your Mac is not equipped with an Apple T2 Security Chip processor, follow these steps:

    Laptops with a non-removable battery

    This applies to all MacBook Air models, as well as MacBook and MacBook Pro models introduced in mid-2009 or later, with the exception of the MacBook (13-inch, mid-2009).

    1. Turn off your Mac.
    2. On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the following keys:
      • Shift on the left side of the keyboard
      • Control on the left side of the keyboard
      • Option (Alt) on the left side of the keyboard
      • Continuing to hold all three keys, also press and hold power button.
      • Keep holding all four keys for 10 seconds.
      • Release all the keys, then press power button, to turn on your Mac.

      Laptops with removable battery

      This applies to all MacBook and MacBook Pro models introduced in early 2009 or earlier, as well as the MacBook model (13-inch, mid-2009).
