Testing a smart speaker Yandex.Station Mini

The main thing worth mentioning here is the quality of voice recognition. Yandex.Station Mini perfectly hears commands even while playing music through external acoustics operating at a very impressive volume level. Unlike solutions with two microphones on board, it is quite comfortable to use it in the kitchen, where something is constantly boiling, the hood is buzzing, music is playing, water is pouring. In this regard, the device turned out to be at its best, like the older model. The microphone can be muted using the button on the back panel, the indicator on the top lights up red, Alice stops responding to commands.

As a device for controlling a smart home, the speaker is just perfect, the built-in four microphones know their business, and the cost is minimal. We talked in detail about what Alice can do in the review dedicated to her latest updates. There you can also find a demonstration of the possibilities of controlling a smart home using a voice assistant. We also returned to the conversation about Alice in the big test of smart devices from Hiper. Let’s not do this again younger Alice works in exactly the same way.

Packaging and equipment

Yandex.Station Mini is packed in a medium density cardboard box with images of the device itself, quotes from a possible conversation with Alice and brief technical characteristics. Inside, all the filling of the box is held by a cardboard insert.

In addition to the device itself, the kit includes a power adapter, a charging cable, documentation and a set of stickers.

Sound and music playback

The speaker of Yandex.Station Mini is extremely small, it cannot provide high sound quality. The speaker sounds about the same as all ultraportable acoustics: no deep bass (the reproducible range starts somewhere around 200 Hz), the sound quality is very average, let’s say. Compared to the well-known JBL portable speakers, they sound a little better. But to seriously talk about any difference when discussing such devices, it is a little incorrect, they are all far from the best way to listen to music.

Traditionally, we carry out two series of measurements for compact speakers. The first is by placing the microphone normal to the speaker at a distance of about 60 cm.And the second by shifting the microphone upward at an angle of 45, since often during operation the device is approximately at the level of the listener’s belt.

The results are then averaged to get the big picture.

Audiobooks, bedtime stories, podcasts, responses to voice commands with this Yandex.Station Mini does an excellent job. The volume is more than enough to hear Alice’s answers in a medium-sized room without much stress. The ability to connect to sound sources via Bluetooth is provided, but it makes little sense to use it for two reasons.

The first is described just above. The second is that when connected wirelessly, the voice assistant is deactivated, respectively, most of the really interesting functions become unavailable. The SBC codec is used to transmit sound, no one expected anything else.

But the ability to connect external speakers via Aux is already much more interesting and useful. This is a great chance to get more or less sane sound from an existing speaker system, plus all the advantages of a device with Alice. However, you should not flatter yourself too much: the filling of the device is clearly not capable of producing high sound quality, and the bitrate of the Yandex.Music stream is a maximum of 320 Kbps.

Design and construction

The body is made in the form of a washer, the design of the device is very similar to the volume control of Yandex.Station the same notch, the same indicator in the center.

Almost the entire side is covered with a fabric casing, which is pleasant both to the sight and to the touch. In general, the device looks much more presentable than the above-mentioned Irbis A and Dexp Smartbox.

Also on the side of the speaker is a small panel with a USB Type-C power connector, a 3.5 mm Aux-out mini-jack and a single button that is responsible for turning off the microphones.

The small purple element with the Yandex logo mainly serves a purely decorative function, but not only next to it is the sensor responsible for gesture recognition. Accordingly, it is logical to place the hand for control somewhere nearby.

On the top panel, we see a row of holes located in a circle, under two of which we can clearly distinguish the same TOF sensor. A little closer to the center there are four microphone holes, and in the middle there is an operating mode indicator.

The lower part of the case is rubberized and does not slip even on glass surfaces. It also contains logos, model number and serial number, as well as other information about the device and manufacturer.

In early October, Yandex introduced a smart column called Yandex.Station Mini. The new device clearly makes it clear that the company is aimed at the widest possible distribution of its voice assistant: it has received a lot of interesting functions, and most importantly, a relatively low price. In addition, interest in it is fueled by large-scale marketing campaigns.

The day after the start of sales, Yandex changed old devices for playing music with a new speaker. In total, a thousand Mini Stations were distributed in this way, the number of participants in the action is estimated at two thousand people. Well, the number of publications, blog entries and other discussions of queues from the metro station to the Yandex office can hardly be counted.

At the same time, Yandex.Station Mini is far from the first compact and inexpensive speaker with Alice. In collaboration with other brands, Irbis A and Dexp Smartbox were released, which completely closed the niche of budget solutions. The new device needed tangible benefits to drive sales. And he has them.

First, as many as four microphones to improve voice recognition is an obvious and practical solution. The older model has 7 of them, but partner products, including the LG XBoom AI ThinQ, have only two. Well, secondly, the main feature of the device is gesture control and related additional toys, which, although not very useful, provide the wow effect to the fullest. Plus original design, high-quality workmanship and other pleasant nuances.

In this gesture, it is important not to swipe, but to move, because a swipe might just take you to the home screen.

In this mode, holding your finger on any of the applications, and each will have a red icon on top, by clicking on which you can close the application. The described option is suitable for the 11th firmware and below. If you have 12th firmware, then you can close the application by swiping it up.

To turn on the screen, you don’t need to press any buttons, you just need to poke your finger into the screen. It will remain blocked, but will allow you to see if there are any new notifications.

Even with a locked screen, you can interact. If you have the Flashlight and Camera icons on the lock screen, to use them you need to hold down the icon. For the Camera, there is another way you can swipe your finger across the screen from right to left.

If you want to dismiss the notification on the locked screen, slide your finger across the notification from right to left. You will have three options for further interaction: Manage, Watch, Clear.

These are the basic gestures you’ll need if your iPhone X is in your hands for the first time.
