Install Whatsapp on Nokia 8110
The original Nokia 8110 phone was introduced to the public back in 1996, the model was distinguished by a curved shape, for which it was popularly called a “banana”, and a flip slider. The film “The Matrix” of the brothers, and now the Wachowski sisters, which appeared on the big screens in 1999, brought popularity to the device. A modified version of 8110 with a shooting flip was shown in the movie. In the wake of the “Matrix” popularity, Finnish company Nokia has even released a limited version of phones with the same mechanism as in the film.
In 1999, Nokia also introduced the 7110, inspired by the 8110, but with a larger screen and a special navigation wheel. The model was popular among business users, for which it was primarily intended.
In 2018, at the MWC exhibition, the current owner of the Nokia brand, the Chinese company HMD Global, decided to restart the previously popular Nokia 8110, introducing the Nokia 8110 4G. In general, HMD fellows in terms of promoting the Nokia brand, they create reincarnations of previously popular models of the Finnish manufacturer and, playing on the nostalgia of users, sell them updated versions. The same company, TCL, which owns the Alcatel brand, does nothing of the kind, although with the latest acquisition of the Chinese, the BlackBerry brand, they still retained the traditions of the Canadian company, but this is a slightly different story. Lenovo’s Chinese company, which acquired Motorola, also did not use previously popular models and did not release their updates for the nostalgic public, although, I think, many reincarnated Motorola Razr. But HMD Global straddled the wave and decided to exploit the old models, serving them with a new sauce, and the first swallow was the revived Nokia 3310, which was warmly received by the public, now the turn of Nokia 8110 has come.
In my opinion, if Nokia managed to make a successful model with Nokia 3110, then missed out on 8110, since 3310 was a national phone, many remember it, many had it, but Nokia 8110 is a niche product. Yes, perhaps the Chinese hoped that 8110 would shoot due to the popularity of the Matrix trilogy, but the film was released too long ago, and what kind of telephones were there, now only fans and some tech-journalists know. At the MWC 2018 exhibition, at which the Nokia 8110 4G was presented, the device made a lot of noise, they wrote more about the phone than about any other device presented in Barcelona. HMD should have put 8110 4G on sale right in the wake of informational noise, but the company didn’t, the first sales began in the summer, when everyone had successfully forgotten about the updated Nokia “banana”.
Design and controls
Dimensions Nokia 8110 4G are small by modern standards: 133.45 x 49.3 x 14.9 mm, weight. 117 grams. Some questions were regarding the curved shape of the device, whether the device can fit normally in your pocket. In my case, the phone was easily placed in my jeans pocket, somehow I didn’t even remember the curved shape. Probably, difficulties will arise if you wear tight clothes, but then, in theory, it is difficult to wear any device, and whether it is curved or not, it does not matter anymore.
In the hand the phone lies like a glove, the bend of the case is just in time here, and it immediately covers this already forgotten feeling from talking with a regular phone, with which you can easily work with one hand.
Nokia 8110 4G is available in two colors: black and yellow.
The phone case is completely made of high-quality plastic, with a rough-to-touch coating, the only exception is the frame with a glossy finish. There are no questions regarding the assembly of the case; there are only claims to the implementation of the flip and its mechanism. The flip is plastic and in the open state is not strong, but it still hangs. The guides and latches are also made of plastic, so over time opening and closing the flip will not be as easy as on the new device. Why they didn’t make a more reliable design is difficult to say, but since you would open the flip for any actions with the device, a high-quality slider mechanism would be useful here. Yes, opening and closing a flip is accompanied by a cheap plastic click that gives out a budget device, and where does a noble click come from here, as, for example, in the Nokia 8800, when everything is plastic here.
Of the controls available without opening the slider, only the on / off button, it also turns the display backlight on and off if you suddenly want to see the time or notifications on the screen.
The keyboard is hidden under the flip, and if you forget how to use the button devices, you will have to re-learn for some time. The buttons are flat, all on the same level, which makes it difficult to work with them, although they are quite large in size. Only the outline of the navigation key stands out from the entire keyboard, it protrudes a little, which makes it convenient to work with it. In principle, it took me about three days to remember how it is to type text on keypads. In principle, it’s like a bicycle, if you once used such devices, you will not forget.
The buttons are backlit in white, uniform and of optimal brightness, so that all characters are read well. I remember the times when manufacturers could not always make the keyboard backlight uniform, but now there are no such problems.
At the top end of the device there was a place for a standard 3.5 mm audio jack and a microUSB connector, which is used both to charge the device and as a drive when connected to a PC. It is a pity that HMD Global, introducing the Nokia 8110 4G at MWC 2018, did not make a USB Type-C connector, which would be in the spirit of the times and this would be appreciated by geeks, for whom the device is more intended.
On the rear panel there is an LED flash that can be used as a flashlight, a 2 MP camera lens and a grid under which the speaker is located. The camera was without autofocus, it was apparently set up just for use in extreme cases, but what if something important or interesting happens, and you don’t have a camera with a normal camera or camera, at least something.
The display in the device is color 2.45 inches with a resolution of QVGA (320 × 240 pixels). It is not curved, as it might seem to you when you first get acquainted with the product, but is installed at an angle, so that the curved part of the body and glass creates such an illusion. There are no questions about the quality of the display, it’s good for the phone, and indeed, no one will read information on the Nokia 8110 4G for a long time, and there’s nothing to see quickly.
The device has a removable 1500 mAh battery, by modern standards it is not much, but enough for a phone with a small display that you will not constantly load. I got about 3 days of battery life for the device, while I also distributed the Internet from it, and played games, and watched YouTube, while I used it clearly more than its owner would do, since I’m constantly sitting at 2.45- an inch screen is so-so entertainment.
The device is based on the Qualcomm 205 chipset (MSM8905), a dual-core processor with a clock frequency of 1.1 GHz is paired with 512 MB of RAM. The Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform was introduced at the end of March 2017, it is designed specifically for low-cost smartphones and phones and features 4G networks, including voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) technology. The chipset is built on a 28-nm process technology, has two ARM Cortex A7 cores with a clock frequency of 1.1 GHz and an Adreno 304 graphics adapter, supports a screen resolution of no higher than VGA and a camera of no more than 3 MP. Used modem X5 LTE Cat. 4 with a data download speed of up to 150 Mbps.
In its capabilities, the Nokia 8110 4G is close to budget smartphones, with the exception of a small size and non-touch screen. In 4G networks, the device works well, there is no problem connecting to Wi-Fi. The overall system performance is not impressive, although you do not expect much from the phone, but I would like, of course, to make the device work a little faster. Perhaps with updates. yes, like on a smartphone, the device receives updates by air. they can increase the speed of the system.
There is 4 GB of permanent memory in the device, of which about 2 GB is available to the user, it can be expanded with microSD memory cards up to 32 GB in size. The memory card slot is located under the removable back cover, and you can access it only by removing the battery.
Access to shortcuts for quick access is assigned to the right function key, similarly to such an implementation, for example, in Android.
The phone can tighten contacts from Gmail and Outlook, which is very convenient and will be appreciated by the owners of smartphones. All the main fields are synchronized, as well as the photo assigned to the contact. Search is carried out in a special field, or you can make contacts on the hardware keys for a quick call.
The email client is simple, but it doesn’t need more for a mobile phone, basic accounts like Gmail can be quickly set up, for others there are advanced settings. By default, only part of the message is downloaded, if necessary, you can download the whole message. You can quickly switch between email accounts, so there’s no confusion. For a quick view of the mail, as well as an answer if necessary, the client’s capabilities are enough, I do not think that someone will seriously work with email on the Nokia 8110 4G.
The device also has a calendar that can synchronize with the Google, Yahoo! and other services that use the CalDav protocol. At first, Google blocks the device’s access to the calendar, and in order to access it from the phone, you need to activate the “Insecure applications allowed” item in the settings of your Gmail account, after that the synchronization will work and all events will appear in the Nokia 8110 4G calendar.
The device also has a good browser that will allow you to see something quickly if necessary, just seriously surf the net from a 2.45-inch non-touch screen. this is so-so entertainment. The YouTube and Google menu sections are browser tabs that are pulled into the menu; when they start, mobile versions of the browser open. By the way, the device is quite drawn to watching online, without any problems I looked at it from one of the presentations.
There is a Google voice assistant in the phone in the form of a separate application, but it does not yet support Russian, and whether it will support in the future is not yet clear.
Also, from the useful tools in the device there is a Calculator, Value Converter, Voice Recorder and Notes, the latter, unfortunately, is autonomous and cannot be synchronized with any services.
Of the pleasant entertainment options, the Nokia 8110 has an FM radio that works only when a headset is connected, as the wire is used as an antenna, simple Music and players. And, of course, the device has the game “Snake”, created for Nokia by Gameloft. Honestly, it would be better if they made it in a retro style, since the modern version is not so interesting and does not cause any nostalgia.
The camera in the device is 2 megapixels, capable of taking photos and recordings. Only it is necessary for emergencies, for example, to take off some document and immediately send it by e-mail, well, or if an alien ship lands before your eyes, and you only have the Nokia 8110 4G at hand, you can case and shoot a on it.
The issue of positioning the device is complex, here, as in the case of Nokia 3310, HMD Global cannot play on a feeling of nostalgia, rather, the company took the retro model as the basis, only to create informational noise. The Nokia 8110 4G will be of interest to a narrow circle of gadgets and advanced users as a second device or a weekend device, when you want to take a break from gadgets and information, but you still need to stay in touch. As a second device, the model also fits well, here you can distribute the Internet and download some data, if necessary, directly to the phone, and even watch YouTube. You can consider the scenario of the device for trips on vacation, but it is more likely for those users who are ready to drag a large camera with them, and leave the smartphone at home, although for me, now they do the opposite, leave the camera at home and take smartphones with them.
There are no complaints regarding the quality of communication with the device, as well as with the speaker and microphone. In 4G networks, the phone works flawlessly, as it connects to any Wi-Fi access points. By the way, the device has two slots for SIM cards, of different formats, one for nanoSIM and the other for microSIM.
The impressions of the device are ambiguous. On the one hand, it has everything that is needed, and even more, on the other, it is unclear where to use it all taking into account the presence of a smartphone. The appearance of the Nokia 8110 4G is excellent, but when you start working with it, you understand that the flip is not absolutely necessary here, or its mechanism should be completely different, the bending of the case also does not really help in the work.
Why do we need a push-button telephone in 2018? Well, firstly, to stand out among the gray mass of smartphone users. And secondly, the “button players” do not stand still either. If you want, watch YouTube on them, if you want. communicate on social networks. In any case, they counted so in Nokia and resurrected the cult slider 8110 with the 4G prefix. A great occasion to check whether you can live today with a regular phone and whether at all.
Who said that current smartphones are all the same? Here is a device specifically for you. though not a smartphone, but you definitely can’t confuse it with anything.
Although, the only thing you can still confuse with Nokia 8110 4G is a banana. The same yellow and curved. True, with the black version of the device such a “trick” does not work anymore.
The novelty is not similar to its ancestor. the legendary Nokia 8110. That tube was made of durable metal, and the slider mechanism could survive the third world one. Here, the plastic cover backlash when driving on the same plastic runners. And in general, the entire body is made of cheap plastic. So the image of the phone does not create workmanship, but exclusively wow!Factor.
Calls and Correspondence
Still, the main function of the phone has not been canceled. Nokia 8110 4G supports up to two SIM cards (nano-SIM micro-SIM), each of which can work in LTE networks.
The quality of communication is not satisfactory; there is VoLTE support. The microphone and the earpiece did not fail either: at both ends of the line everything is well audible.
You can receive an incoming call simply by opening the slider cover. It breaks off at the touch of a button, or by closing the keyboard. A rather unpleasant moment is connected with this. if you accidentally close the lid during a conversation, it will automatically break off. Also, with incomplete opening, the lid may block the microphone, which is why the interlocutors hear you worse. But all these problems can be solved using a headset for talking.
If you take the Nokia 8110 4G in addition to your smartphone, contact synchronization via Gmail will be useful. you do not need to transfer everything manually, just log in to your Google account via the phone book.
You can also check mail using the built-in client, but conducting business correspondence from an old-fashioned keyboard is inconvenient. However, there is a good old T9, with which it is easier to type long messages. It is only worth remembering about the incidents of predictive input, because of which so many funny and ridiculous situations happen to this day.
Out of the box, the Nokia 8110 4G offers several pre-installed games, many of which, in fact, copy popular races and runners, also work in demo mode and require the purchase of the full version. For button casuals, this is too presumptuous, because the same Asphalt and Temple Run on smartphones are free and much more fun.
Perhaps the most important thing. there is a “Snake”, which has not changed much over the years. Game mechanics survived, but the graphics became more colorful. The game allows you to cheerfully pass the time on the way to work, just like fifteen years ago.
The main feature of the Nokia 8110 4G is the support for fourth-generation networks. even the name indicates this. Nevertheless, it is difficult to evaluate fast Internet on a small screen, so the novelty can distribute Wi-Fi to other devices. Just turn on the “Access Point” mode in the settings and go to the network from another device. In addition, the phone can work as a wired modem via a micro-USB cable.
The data transfer rate with a good network signal reached 40 Mbps, which was more than enough for two connected devices. a laptop and a smartphone.
The phone has 4 GB of memory on board, of which a little more than two are free. If you expand the volume with a microSD memory card by 64 GB. enough for several thousand songs in MP3 format. The FLAC device does not support, but it does not need it.
The sound with the complete headset is completely outstanding. there is no deep bass, high frequencies are also extremely simplified. However, you can pass the time on the road without having to plant a smartphone.
In addition to the 3.5 mm audio jack, the device has a Bluetooth module version 4.1, so you can connect any wireless headphones to it. In this case, you can achieve a much more interesting sound, since the codec built into the headphones is responsible for the conversion of the audio signal.
There is no need to wait for miracles. A resolution of a couple of megapixels and the lack of autofocus make the camera suitable only for shooting text. Daytime shots are faded and blurry, I don’t want to talk about the. Perhaps the most useful part of the camera here is the flash, which is also a flashlight. Welcome to the past.
The Nokia 8110 4G has a YouTube client preinstalled in which you can runs in 240p quality. I definitely thank you for the opportunity, as well as for the loud and clear multimedia speaker. However, you won’t watch longs on a tiny phone screen. Also, there are no playback settings and the ability to enable subtitles.
Of the social networking clients, only Twitter is currently available. If you need Facebook or VKontakte, you have to open a browser and get ready for slow loading, slow page scrolling and the absence of notifications. In general, the phone is not very suitable for freezing in social networks.
To make it easier to find the right site, the device is preinstalled with Google Assistant. He works in English and, in addition to Web-search, also opens the necessary applications, for example, a navigator by the request of “Open Maps”. It’s a pity that voice input does not work inside applications. you have to drive the address manually.
At the same time, the navigation itself works fine. It finds GPS satellites quickly, location is determined accurately, and maps are constantly updated. The scale changes by pressing the numbers 1 and 3 (decrease and increase, respectively). True, it’s hard to make out what the phone shows in bright light, and there are no voice prompts.
Remember how old phones could live a week on a single charge? Then they did not have such a set of functions, so you can expect something similar from Nokia 8110 4G only in the power saving mode, in which data transfer, Bluetooth and geolocation are turned off. During testing, the phone withstood three days of active use. In various modes of use, the device showed the following results:
- 30 minutes of conversation. 7% of the battery discharge;
- one hour of playing the “Snake”. 5% of the battery discharge;
- three hours of music. 6% battery discharge;
- five hours in modem mode with constant data exchange. 100% battery drain.
Charging the phone to 100% of the 5V / 0.5A adapter takes almost four hours.

The other day I bought a Nokia 8110 4G phone. This is the only push-button a phone that I know on which there is 4G and the ability to use third-party applications (such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, VK, Viber and others). But to install them on the phone you need “dancing with a tambourine”. A lot of pitfalls that need to be provided and which are written in parts on different sites. I decided to collect everything in one place and share my experience with you.
The source I relied on was the bananahackers resource (sites.google.com/view/bananahackers/home). But there, unfortunately, not all the nuances are described and some moments had to be thought out and searched for myself.
To make settings, an SD card must be installed in the phone.
I draw your attention to the fact that when I tried to make this instruction through Windows, I ran into unsolvable problems and everything turned out only on Linux. If you don’t have it at hand, install a virtual machine (for example, through the free Oracle VM VirtualBox application). Installing VirtualBox and any version of Linux (I use Linux Mint everywhere) will take no more than 10 minutes.
How to install WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, VK, Viber on Nokia 8110 4G with Android KaiOS
I draw your attention to the fact that WhatsApp has to be reinstalled manually approximately every 2-3 months, since this program cannot be updated automatically, and without updating the phone does not start it. Unfortunately, developers cannot solve this problem yet. Other programs do not need to be reinstalled.
First of all, download and install Firefox 52.9 ESR and ADB (Android Debug Bridge)
To do this, run sequentially in the Linux console:
We translate the phone into developer mode using the command ## 33284 ##
A developer icon should appear at the top of the screen.
We connect the phone through the wire to the computer. If you use a virtual machine, select the virtual machine at the top of the window ” Devices USB ” and your device (will be called Android). Be sure to see that Android has a checkmark indicating that the device is connected. I draw your attention to the fact that you need to plug the phone into the USB port BEFORE you start the virtual machine. If it doesn’t work with the connection, turn off the phone, turn off the virtual machine. Then we turn on the phone first, make sure that the developer mode is on, connect the phone’s cable to the USB port, and only then turn on the virtual machine again.
Then sequentially run the console:
After that, in the virtual machine, we again go to ” Devices USB ” and uncheck your Android so that it temporarily disconnects after a server reboot, which we performed a minute earlier.
Then check the box again to connect the device.
Then run the console:
There should not be any error messages, just silent execution of the command. If there are errors, we reboot the phone, the virtual machine and repeat everything again.
Then run Firefox-esr with the command
In the address bar, enter: about: profiles
The page with setting profiles opens. Create a new profile. Then click ” Launch profile in new browsew “. A new Firefox-esr window opens.
Then, in the right pop-up menu of Firefox-esr, select ” Developer WebIDE “.
Push ” Remote runtime “. Then we leave hostname: port one that is already entered by default (localhost: 6000). Your device should connect. At the top there will be an error that you need to update Firefox, but do not pay attention to her, it doesn’t bother us. The main thing that properties should become available ” Device Preferences ” and others in the right WebIDE menu.
If there is an error ” Operation failed: Connection to Remote Runtime “, then either our device is not connected, or there were errors when executing the adb forward command. We make sure that we execute all the commands from the superuser and that there are no errors. If it does not help, we reboot the phone and the virtual machine.
Then download and unzip the standalone OmniSD package. Select its folder in ” Open Packaged App. ” in the left menu of WebIDE. If you see an error ” Operation failed: importing packaged app: TypeError: IDB._db is null “or mistake ” insufficient permissions for device: verify udev rules ” it means that you opened an incorrect profile in Firefox. The Firefox application should be open in the new profile that we created a few steps above.
Then click the green triangle in WebIDE to start the device debug mode.
If everything is okay, a request for a privileged reset will appear on your phone. Push # for confirmation. The phone restarts.
Then you need to restart the debug mode on the phone with the combination ## 33284 ##. You will also need to reconnect it to the virtual machine. To do this, be sure to restart Linux on the virtual machine and re-check the USB settings.
After that we repeat:
- Running Firefox with a command in the terminal: sudo / usr / lib / firefox-esr / firefox-esr
- Enter about: profiles in the address and run a separate profile
- Enter in the terminal: sudo adb kill-server
- Enter in the terminal: sudo adb start-server
- We remove it, then check the usb devices in the virtual machine again (either disconnect and reconnect the cable if you are running Linux)
- We enter in the terminal: sudo adb forward tcp: 6000 localfilesystem: / data / local / debugger-socket
- Create the apps folder on the SD card
- We upload application files to it (first we download them on the bananahackers website): WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, VK, Viber, ICQ
- We open the developer mode in Firefox, do Remote Runtime, open the folder through “Open Packaged App. “, click the triangle to start debugging
If you can’t do it, don’t be nervous! Just restart your phone and try again. Try swapping items. For example, I managed to do everything only for the 5th time. Patience and perseverance. this is your key to solving this problem.
After that, you will be prompted on the phone to install the applications that you downloaded into the apps folder.
