How to install a driver on Windows 10

Pre-configuring new Samsung printers the first time they connect to a computer is critical. Without this, the system will not be able to send the print job correctly. Fortunately, the configuration process is pretty straightforward and can be done by any confident PC user.

We start following the instructions by following the links located at the top of the article to download drivers for the Samsung SCX-3400 printer. In this case, the download will take place in the system folder “Downloads”. From there, the distribution kit will need to be launched through the “Open” menu.

The installation of new equipment must be done “from scratch”, for which we select the item “Install” and mark it with a dot. Click “OK” to continue.

In the next step, be sure to familiarize yourself with the license agreement for the use of Samsung intellectual property and devices. We click on the first link and carefully read the text. If there are no comments or objections, then we check the box opposite our agreement at the bottom of the window. Go “Next”.

Next, you need to decide on the type of connection to the system unit. The usual option is available using a cable, via a local network (via Ethernet) or via a wireless WiFi network. Click “Next” to continue.

We connect the system unit and the printer with the cable from the kit as shown in the picture. We plug the power cord from the printing device into an outlet and turn on the power. It will take up to 5 minutes for the software to recognize and configure the printer. After completion, you need to print a test page.

    Automatic software download

For the operating system to always automatically load drivers and pictures for connected devices, you can do the following.

Call the context menu with the right mouse button on the computer icon and select Device installation settings.

In the window that opens, select the recommended setting and “Save Changes”.

Now, when connecting a new device, Windows will automatically search for the driver in its database.

    Windows Update

Windows has a huge software base for almost all peripherals, including printers. We use it.

We connect the printer or MFP to the computer and wait a couple of minutes. The device will be identified or detected and Windows will try to install the driver. Since you are reading this article, then most likely this method did not work. Let’s start the update manually.

    We go along the way:

Click on the computer icon with the right mouse button and select. Windows Update.

In the window that opens, click “Check for updates”.

This will search for software for your devices. If something is found, it will either download and install automatically, or you will need to give permission. In my case, everything is done automatically.

You may need to restart your computer. Run and see if the printer is installed. If the device is installed, but does not print, then I would connect it to a different USB port. (If the printer does not print in principle, you can see this article).

How to install a printer without a disk

In the last article, we figured out how to install a printer from an installation disk, in this one we will figure out how to be if there is no disk.

    There are two options:

    • Windows Update;
    • Download the driver yourself.
    • Windows Update installs basic drivers. They only allow printing and / or scanning. Additional functions such as image processing before printing, adjusting colors and others will not be available.

The advantages of the second method are that we will download the latest software for the device and all specific functions will be available.

How to install the scanner and configure it to work

      • How to install the scanner and configure it to work
      • How to connect a scanner to a laptop
      • How to set up your scanner

Scanner types and their compatibility with Windows

Scanners are available in color and black and white. Their dimensions depend on the model and brand of the manufacturer. Today scanners are produced by hundreds of companies, mainly from the USA, Japan and some countries of Southeast Asia. The vast majority of them are compatible with the Windows operating system.

It should be noted that you can install the scanner yourself in two ways. Their choice depends on whether you are connecting the scanner directly to a personal computer or laptop (the so-called local scanner installation) or to a shared network scanner through which your model will work.

How to properly install the scanner on a PC or laptop

To install a local scanner, you need a basic USB cable. As a rule, it is included in the package. However, you can use any other USB cable. Connect one end to the back of the scanner itself, and the other to a special connector on your computer. Turn it on and wait a while for Windows to automatically detect it.

If Windows cannot detect your scanner, you may need to install drivers on your computer. A driver disc is also included in the package. If for some reason you cannot find it, go to the official website of the scanner manufacturer. Drivers for all models will be posted there for free download in a special section. Download and install them on your computer or laptop and try connecting the scanner again.

How to install the scanner yourself via a network server

In many organizations, all scanners are connected to one specific network scanner. This makes their work much faster and saves employees time.

In this case, you will need to spend a little more time to properly install the scanner. First, connect the scanner to your computer with a USB cable. Then click the Start button on your computer. In the menu that opens, select the Control Panel section, and then. Network. Following these, you will see a special menu in which you need to select the Network and Sharing Center item. Select the command View network computers and devices.

Find your scanner model in the list of scanners and right-click on it. In the menu that opens, select the Install item. Following this, the Installation Wizard will automatically load. Follow its instructions exactly by clicking the Next buttons. At the end of the installation, click the Finish button. This completes the connection of the scanner to the shared network scanner.

      Warm-up time

Suppose that you sent the document you created to print, and forgot to turn on the printer. Of course, in the end, you will find it and turn it on, but a cold laser printer will take some time to warm up, so you will not receive your document right away. And when? It depends on the volume of the document and the printer warm-up time. It is the latter that I checked in this test. For this, the printer was “kept” off for 5 hours. A test job was placed in the print queue. After that, the printer was turned on and the time was measured from the moment it was turned on until the first sheet of paper was captured.

So. The manufacturer’s declared warm-up time for ML-1210 (hereinafter, information is taken from www.Samsung.Ru) is 25 seconds. My experiments have shown that the real average warm-up time for this printer is 33.5 seconds. It is possible that manufacturers measured this parameter from a hibernation state in which the printer was for some time. But this is not said anywhere and, according to my logic, I believe that the measurement was made from a “cold” state.

      “Iron” tests

The printer was tested in normal home conditions (ambient temperature 23 degrees, humidity 55%). The tested printer was connected to the bench computer using the supplied cable (IEEE 1284 (parallel interface)). The bench computer was running Windows XP Professional, in which the corresponding driver was installed, supplied on the disk with the printer.

      Print speed

So we got to one of the most important tests. Checking the print speed. Based on the manufacturer’s declared 12 pages per minute, I sent 15 pages of text (about 5% coverage) to print, but I measured the print time of 12 pages. Further, using the simplest mathematics, it was not difficult to calculate the number of pages printed in one minute. Why I printed 15 pages, I will explain a little later, but for now I will give the results of measurements.

The average print speed at 300 dpi was 11.14 pages per minute ?? The value is very close to the declared one. When the resolution was set to 600 dpi, the print speed dropped to 8.52 ppm due to the large file size sent to print. To the results I received, I can also add that there is no difference in print speed between normal and economy modes (this is true for both 300 dpi and 600 dpi).

Now I’ll tell you why I sent 15 pages of text to print for this test. The fact is that I made measurements on 12 pages (I just took this number from the manufacturer’s statement), but, as it turned out, ML-1210 has a habit of “thinking” before issuing the last pages of the document. All the above measurement results were obtained without taking into account this “thoughtfulness”, since it manifested itself before the printing of the 15th page. If you want to print exactly 12 pages, then the real print time at 600 dpi is 1 minute and 29 seconds. I haven’t tried to print large documents, so I cannot say how many times the ML-1210 can “think” in one print session. In my case, when printing up to 30 pages, it appeared only once per session and at the same time always before printing the last page.

      Samsung ML-1210 Laser Printer

I am sure that the laser printer installed in the office does not surprise anyone. This phenomenon is quite common and is justified by the combination of the technical characteristics of these devices with the needs of modern offices. Another thing is a home printer. Today, most home PC owners have a preference for inkjet technology. This is mainly due to the rather low cost of inkjet printers with their quite tolerable technical characteristics. Add color printing to that and you have a near-perfect home and family printer. Why almost? Because. No! Still, the topic of today’s review ?? Not inkjet printers, and therefore I will not discuss them now, but will return to them in some next article.

So, we can safely say that laser printing technologies have confidently started their way towards our home. An example is the culprit for this review. The Samsung ML-1210 laser printer. Judge for yourself: not all of us need color printing. In addition, not everyone is satisfied with the water resistance of hard copies of documents from inkjet printers. The cartridge resource, print speed, copy price, buffer size. All this makes us turn our eyes towards laser printers, but the price of these devices is quite high, which scares off a potential buyer. The aforementioned Samsung ML-1210, having very good characteristics, has a very low price for a laser printer. It is because of this fact that this device falls into the line of home rather than office printers. So we will consider it exactly from the point of view of a home PC user and start with the configuration and technical characteristics.

Having opened the box for which we paid our hard-earned 200-210 (price on the day of publication of the review), we find the following content in it:

      • Samsung ML-1210 Laser Printer
      • Cartridge (sealed)
      • Network cable
      • Centronix cable
      • Driver disc
      • A sheet of thick paper that shows instructions for installing the software, installing the cartridge and preparing for the first turn on the printer

      Weight6.2 kg

In my opinion, such characteristics are more than acceptable for a home printer. Whether they correspond to the real ones, I will tell you later when I describe the ML-1210 tests directly, but for now I want to draw your attention to the very useful functions that this model is equipped with and which will surely please many users. Here are some of them:

      • Printing multiple pages on one side of a sheet (up to 16)
      • Scaled printing (scale 10-100)
      • Poster printing (up to 6×6 sheets)
      • Printing overlays
      • Printing “watermarks”

Attractive? Well, perhaps it lacks the ability to print on both sides, but demanding so much from a fairly cheap printer is simply indecent!

Externally, ML-1210 does not stand out in anything special. Quite usual for a modern printer design and rather modest dimensions.

The printer has two output trays. One of them is for plain paper, and the other is ?? For envelopes. And do not try to insert A4 plain paper into the envelope tray. No matter how hard you try, the ML-1210 will assume that it is dealing with envelopes and, accordingly, will not fully use the length of A4 sheet. It is not possible and unnecessary to convince the printer that plain paper is in the envelope tray. There is only one output tray in ML-1210, but besides it there is a slot for paper exit. Located right on the front of the printer, it is used primarily when printing on thick paper. Of course, it can be used when printing on plain paper, but at the same time the sheets coming out of the printer will take up space on your desktop and, of course, will not be stacked as evenly as when dispensed into the receiving tray.

Paper and envelope traysPaper exit slotReceiving tray, controls and alarms

The control and display panel consists of three buttons and three LED indicators. The LEDs indicate an error condition (for example, a jammed sheet of paper), the end of paper or envelopes in the input trays, and the arrival / presence of data in the printer buffer. There are no more difficulties with buttons. One of them is for nothing more than printing a test page. The test page can be printed regardless of whether the printer is connected to the computer or not. The other two buttons are more useful to the user in daily life. The “Toner Save Mode” button turns on, respectively, the economical printing mode. In this mode, the button is backlit with a dull green light and looks ridiculous, but you know what mode the printer is in. The remaining Cancel / Reprint button has two functions. In print mode, it allows you to cancel printing. But when you press the same button at the end of printing, ML-1210 will print you the last page of the document.

      Open printer with cartridge installed

In the photos I have shown you can see the cartridges used in the ML-1210. The cartridge supplied with the printer is not fully charged and is designed to print 500 pages of text (approximately 5% coverage). But by buying a new cartridge or refilling the one that comes with the kit (after its end), you can expect to print 2500 pages.

From an external examination of the ML-1210, we pass to an examination of the software supplied with it. In this case, all of the screenshots I have shown were made in Windows XP Professional. I hope these examples will help you more fully appreciate the functionality of the printer.

After installing the driver from the disk supplied with the printer, you have quite wide opportunities to customize the ML-1210 for your specific needs. Russification of all driver tabs is done correctly, and if you still have any questions, then you can refer to the user manual, which describes the printer settings in sufficient detail. The manual is supplied on the same disk as the driver, but, unfortunately, the quality of its Russification leaves much to be desired. However, if necessary, you can figure it out.

In the “Paper” tab, you can control the parameters inherent in almost any printer. Here you can set the paper type and size, paper feed tray or automatic selection, and sheet orientation (portrait / landscape). In addition, in the same tab, you can set the number of printed copies of the document, if you want to replicate it.

In addition to the parameters related to photography itself, in this tab you can control some printer parameters that have no direct relation to photography. This controls the power saving mode and the printer’s response to paper jams. All other parameters relate directly to the photographic part. You can change the resolution, print density, and programmatically control the toner save mode. Unfortunately, when you programmatically enable toner saving, the corresponding button on the printer control panel is not highlighted, so if you always want to know what mode the printer is in, use hardware mode switching.

It is in this tab that the control of additional and, perhaps, very useful functions, which the ML-1210 is equipped with, is located. If you are not comfortable with standard output, which prints one document page on one physical page, you can force the ML-1210 to place multiple document pages on the same physical page. The maximum driver allows you to place up to 16 pages on one sheet. If you do not need to reduce the pages of the document, but rather to increase them, then in the same tab you can set the appropriate output. By maximizing one page of your document, you can end up with a 6×6 poster. When displaying photographic information, you may find two more output modes useful. This is the “Fit to Page” mode, which is useful when the output photographic image is larger than the size of the paper, and “Print with scaling”, in which you can change the print scale in 1% increments.

Overlay printing is useful when you work a lot with business documents. Once, for example, creating your organization’s letterhead and specifying its use in the overlays tab saves you some work. Each time you output a document, it will be, as it were, superimposed on the form you created. Multiple overlays can be created, reducing the creation of business documents to simple typing.

Ml-1210 does not know how to make real watermarks, of course, but using the settings in the Watermarks tab, you can slightly embellish the documents being printed. Any text you wish can be printed as if under the main text of the document. At the same time, you can change the brightness of the printing of such “watermarks”, their size, font, position on the page and the angle of inclination. Naturally, you can also enter the text “watermarks”.

This completes the descriptive part of the printer. I hope that it was enough for you to evaluate the appearance and functional equipment of the ML-1210. Next, I turn to tests of some technical parameters, which, it seems to me, in combination with functionality and allow us to assess the attractiveness of this printer as a whole.

      Print quality

There is no need to describe the ML-1210’s print quality in words. Below are scanned examples for normal mode and toner save mode, in which you can evaluate both the readability of the font of different sizes and the quality of the fill. From myself, I can add that, in my opinion, for a home printer of this quality is more than enough.

      Zoom Ultra Paper (Recommended)

      300 dpi economical.300 dpi normal600 dpi economical.600 dpi normal

Typewriter paper (Znamenskaya factory. Paper quality is below average)

      300 dpi economical.300 dpi normal600 dpi economical.600 dpi normal

      First sheet exit

During this test, I measured the time from the moment the data entered the printer’s print buffer until the first sheet was fully ejected into the output tray. For this, one page of text was sent from a text editor to print (filling approximately 5%). Immediately before the test, the same page was printed, that is, the printer was warmed up and was not in “sleep”. The result of my measurements showed that the average time for the first sheet to be released is 20.4 seconds with the manufacturer’s declared 13 seconds. The end of the measurement, I considered the moment when the sheet came out of the printer and lay in the receiving tray. To clear my conscience, I measured the time from the moment the data entered the print buffer until the sheet appeared from the bowels of the printer. Result ?? 16.8 seconds, already closer to the declared 13 seconds, however, it is still slightly higher.

      Method one: local connection

To solve the problem related to how to set up a printer to print from a computer, first you need to establish a reliable and stable connection between your personal computer and the printer, using a high-quality USB cable. After that, connect the device to the electrical network. Then follow these steps:

      • First of all, open the “Start” menu and click on the section with printing devices.
      • In the new window, pay attention to the top panel, where you need to click on the tab that implies the installation of a new printing device.
      • Now the installation wizard window should open in front of you, where among the two options you need to click on the topmost one: “Add local”.
      • At the next step, the wizard will ask you to decide on the optimal port. In general, everything can be left unchanged and click on the existing port: “LPT1”. After that click on the “Next” button.

After completing all the steps listed above, start directly configuring the operation of the device connected to the PC. First, you need to install the appropriate software, i.E. Driver. To solve this problem, i.E. “How to install drivers”, use the CD with the installation file, which comes in one set with the office equipment that you purchased.

It should be noted that installing the MFP from disk is more convenient and preferable option.
If you do not have the opportunity to use this installation method, then to solve a problem like “how to install a printer driver”, use Windows Update, but at the same time your PC must be connected to the Internet at that moment. It should be added that you can find a driver for your printer model on our website or the official website of its manufacturer.

The third way to install firewood on a new printer connected to a PC is to use the Add Hardware Wizard, where you will need to select the appropriate option for your printing device, and then follow these steps:

      • After selecting the manufacturer of your device and its specific name in the wizard window, click on the “Next” button.
      • In the next step, the installation wizard will ask you to choose a name for your device. Enter it and click on “Next”.
      • Now you need to select the parameters for accessing the printing device from other personal computers. In this case, you need to click either on “Allow sharing.” or “Not sharing.”.

At this point, you can stop installing the device, because the problem of how to set up a printer on a computer has already been solved. Now you just have to check the print to make sure that the device configured for windows 7 is working correctly and your system is able to find it in case of a print task.

To do this, you just need to click on the button that triggers the test page print. It turns out, as a rule, at the last stage of driver installation. Be sure not to forget to put a tick on the “Use by default” item in the same place. It should be added that you can also install the printer on windows 8 using the instructions described above.

Installing the Printer Driver on a Computer

Solving the problem related to how to set up a printer to print from a computer is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Nevertheless, you need to take it competently and seriously, especially for those who like to work in Word and other text editors, who always need to have a printing device at hand.

In order to answer the question of how to install a printer on a computer running Windows OS, you can use two methods. One of them is to connect a printing device directly to a personal computer. The so-called. Local method. As for the second method, its use means installing a printing device over a network. The so-called. Network method. In general, both methods are relatively simple, but if you do not follow the instructions strictly, you can easily get confused, as a result of which the installation will have to start from the very beginning.

      Method two: network connection

      • To solve a problem related to how to connect a printer to a computer when organizing a local network, first of all, you have to go to the “Start” menu section, where a list of printing devices connected to the PC is displayed.
      • In the new window, you should click on the item “Add printer” and select the lower one among the two options, ie “Add network, wireless.”.
      • The Windows operating system will then automatically search for all printing devices installed and connected to the local network. Thus, the problem is solved, which is related to how to find a printer.
      • As a result of this action, the PC will connect to the device and automatically install the software necessary for it. Thanks to this, you do not need to spend time on this step “how to install drivers on the printer”. But sometimes a manual installation is required. In particular, in the window of the installation wizard, “Install drivers” may pop up. To fix the problem, just take and click on this button.
      • After that, a message will appear stating that you have successfully installed such and such a printer. Click on “Next”.

Thus, the answers to the questions about how to add a printer and how to install a printer have been found. In general, both installing and updating the driver for the printer is not difficult at all and this task does not take so much time, the main thing is that at the end, be sure to make a test print.

But if the sheet sent for printing did not print, then you should make sure that the addition of a new device was performed without any restrictions for such a device. The following option is also possible: the equipment intended for printing is simply not connected to the host PC. Also, try updating the installed drivers. To do this, open the device properties in the “Devices and Printers” section, then open the “Advanced” tab and click on “Change” in front of the device driver. The update will then be installed on the PC in automatic mode.

In general, a correctly and correctly installed device should work in absolutely normal mode.
