My experiments have shown that the real average warm-up time for this printer is 33.5 seconds. It is possible that manufacturers measured this parameter from a hibernation state in which the printer was for some time. But this is not said anywhere and, according to my logic, I believe that the measurement was made from a “cold” state.
The printer was tested in normal home conditions (ambient temperature 23 degrees, humidity 55%). The tested printer was connected to the bench computer using the supplied cable (IEEE 1284 (parallel interface)). The bench computer was running Windows XP Professional, in which the corresponding driver was installed, supplied on the disk with the printer.
So we got to one of the most important tests. Checking the print speed. Based on the manufacturer’s declared 12 pages per minute, I sent 15 pages of text (about 5% coverage) to print, but I measured the print time of 12 pages. Further, using the simplest mathematics, it was not difficult to calculate the number of pages printed in one minute. Why I printed 15 pages, I will explain a little later, but for now I will give the results of measurements.
The average print speed at 300 dpi was 11.14 pages per minute ?? The value is very close to the declared one. When the resolution was set to 600 dpi, the print speed dropped to 8.52 ppm due to the large file size sent to print. To the results I received, I can also add that there is no difference in print speed between normal and economy modes (this is true for both 300 dpi and 600 dpi).
Now I’ll tell you why I sent 15 pages of text to print for this test. The fact is that I made measurements on 12 pages (I just took this number from the manufacturer’s statement), but, as it turned out, ML-1210 has a habit of “thinking” before issuing the last pages of the document. All the above measurement results were obtained without taking into account this “thoughtfulness”, since it manifested itself before the printing of the 15th page. If you want to print exactly 12 pages, then the real print time at 600 dpi is 1 minute and 29 seconds. I haven’t tried to print large documents, so I cannot say how many times the ML-1210 can “think” in one print session. In my case, when printing up to 30 pages, it appeared only once per session and at the same time always before printing the last page.

Judge for yourself: not all of us need color printing. In addition, not everyone is satisfied with the water resistance of hard copies of documents from inkjet printers. The cartridge resource, print speed, copy price, buffer size. All this makes us turn our eyes towards laser printers, but the price of these devices is quite high, which scares off a potential buyer. The aforementioned Samsung ML-1210, having very good characteristics, has a very low price for a laser printer. It is because of this fact that this device falls into the line of home rather than office printers. So we will consider it exactly from the point of view of a home PC user and start with the configuration and technical characteristics.

Externally, ML-1210 does not stand out in anything special. Quite usual for a modern printer design and rather modest dimensions.
The printer has two output trays. One of them is for plain paper, and the other is ?? For envelopes. And do not try to insert A4 plain paper into the envelope tray. No matter how hard you try, the ML-1210 will assume that it is dealing with envelopes and, accordingly, will not fully use the length of A4 sheet. It is not possible and unnecessary to convince the printer that plain paper is in the envelope tray. There is only one output tray in ML-1210, but besides it there is a slot for paper exit. Located right on the front of the printer, it is used primarily when printing on thick paper. Of course, it can be used when printing on plain paper, but at the same time the sheets coming out of the printer will take up space on your desktop and, of course, will not be stacked as evenly as when dispensed into the receiving tray.

The control and display panel consists of three buttons and three LED indicators. The LEDs indicate an error condition (for example, a jammed sheet of paper), the end of paper or envelopes in the input trays, and the arrival / presence of data in the printer buffer. In the “Paper” tab, you can control the parameters inherent in almost any printer. Here you can set the paper type and size, paper feed tray or automatic selection, and sheet orientation (portrait / landscape). In addition, in the same tab, you can set the number of printed copies of the document, if you want to replicate it.
In addition to the parameters related to photography itself, in this tab you can control some printer parameters that have no direct relation to photography. This controls the power saving mode and the printer’s response to paper jams. All other parameters relate directly to the photographic part. You can change the resolution, print density, and programmatically control the toner save mode. Unfortunately, when you programmatically enable toner saving, the corresponding button on the printer control panel is not highlighted, so if you always want to know what mode the printer is in, use hardware mode switching.
It is in this tab that the control of additional and, perhaps, very useful functions, which the ML-1210 is equipped with, is located. If you are not comfortable with standard output, which prints one document page on one physical page, you can force the ML-1210 to place multiple document pages on the same physical page. The maximum driver allows you to place up to 16 pages on one sheet. If you do not need to reduce the pages of the document, but rather to increase them, then in the same tab you can set the appropriate output. By maximizing one page of your document, you can end up with a 6×6 poster. When displaying photographic information, you may find two more output modes useful. This is the “Fit to Page” mode, which is useful when the output photographic image is larger than the size of the paper, and “Print with scaling”, in which you can change the print scale in 1% increments.
Overlay printing is useful when you work a lot with business documents. Once, for example, creating your organization’s letterhead and specifying its use in the overlays tab saves you some work. Each time you output a document, it will be, as it were, superimposed on the form you created. Multiple overlays can be created, reducing the creation of business documents to simple typing.
Ml-1210 does not know how to make real watermarks, of course, but using the settings in the Watermarks tab, you can slightly embellish the documents being printed. Any text you wish can be printed as if under the main text of the document. At the same time, you can change the brightness of the printing of such “watermarks”, their size, font, position on the page and the angle of inclination. Naturally, you can also enter the text “watermarks”.
This completes the descriptive part of the printer. I hope that it was enough for you to evaluate the appearance and functional equipment of the ML-1210. Next, I turn to tests of some technical parameters, which, it seems to me, in combination with functionality and allow us to assess the attractiveness of this printer as a whole.
There is no need to describe the ML-1210’s print quality in words. Below are scanned examples for normal mode and toner save mode, in which you can evaluate both the readability of the font of different sizes and the quality of the fill. From myself, I can add that, in my opinion, for a home printer of this quality is more than enough.

During this test, I measured the time from the moment the data entered the printer’s print buffer until the first sheet was fully ejected into the output tray. For this, one page of text was sent from a text editor to print (filling approximately 5%). Immediately before the test, the same page was printed, that is, the printer was warmed up and was not in “sleep”. The result of my measurements showed that the average time for the first sheet to be released is 20.4 seconds with the manufacturer’s declared 13 seconds. The end of the measurement, I considered the moment when the sheet came out of the printer and lay in the receiving tray. To clear my conscience, I measured the time from the moment the data entered the print buffer until the sheet appeared from the bowels of the printer. Result ?? 16.8 seconds, already closer to the declared 13 seconds, however, it is still slightly higher.
Method one: local connection
To solve the problem related to how to set up a printer to print from a computer, first you need to establish a reliable and stable connection between your personal computer and the printer, using a high-quality USB cable. After that, connect the device to the electrical network. Then follow these steps:
- First of all, open the “Start” menu and click on the section with printing devices.
- In the new window, pay attention to the top panel, where you need to click on the tab that implies the installation of a new printing device.
- Now the installation wizard window should open in front of you, where among the two options you need to click on the topmost one: “Add local”.
- At the next step, the wizard will ask you to decide on the optimal port. In general, everything can be left unchanged and click on the existing port: “LPT1”. After that click on the “Next” button.
After completing all the steps listed above, start directly configuring the operation of the device connected to the PC. First, you need to install the appropriate software, i.E. Driver.
