How to Transfer Windows 10 to Another Computer

Having bought a new computer, the user often faces the problem of installing an operating system on it, downloading and installing the necessary programs, as well as transferring personal data. You can skip this step if you use the OS transfer tool to another computer. Next, we will consider the features of migrating Windows 10 to another machine.

How to transfer Windows 10 to another PC

One of the dozens of innovations is the binding of the operating system to a specific set of hardware components, which is why simply creating a backup copy and deploying it to another system is not enough. The procedure consists of several stages:

  • Creating bootable media;
  • Unlinking the system from the hardware component;
  • Creating an image with backup;
  • Deployment backup on a new machine.

Let’s go in order.

Step 1: Create Bootable Media

This step is one of the most important, since bootable media is required to deploy the system image. There are many programs for Windows that allow you to achieve your goal. We will not consider sophisticated solutions for the corporate sector, their functionality is redundant for us, but small applications like AOMEI Backupper Standard will be just right.

    Having opened the application, go to the main menu section Utilities, in which click on the category “Create bootable media”.

At the beginning of creation, check the box. Windows PE and press “Next”.

Here, select the media for the Live image: an optical disk, a USB flash drive or a specific place on the HDD. Mark the option you want and click “Next” to continue.

  • Wait until the backup is created (depending on the number of installed applications, this may take a considerable time) and click “Finish” to complete the procedure.
  • Stage 2: Unlinking the system from the hardware

    An equally important step is decoupling the OS from the hardware, which will ensure the normal deployment of the backup copy (more on this in the next part of the article). This task will help us complete the Sysprep utility, one of the Windows system tools. The procedure for using this software is identical for all versions of “windows”, and earlier we considered it in a separate article.

    Stage 3: Creating a Untied OS Backup

    In this step, we will again need the AOMEI Backupper. Of course, you can use any other application to create backup copies. they work on the same principle, differing only in the interface and some available options.

      Run the program, go to the tab “Backup” and click on the option “System Backup”.

    Now you should select the disk on which the system is installed. by default it is C: \.

  • Next, in the same window, specify the location of the backup to be created. If you transfer the system along with the HDD, you can select any non-system volume. If you plan to transfer to a machine with a new drive, it is better to use a volumetric USB flash drive or an external USB-drive. Once you’ve done, click “Further”.
  • Wait until the system image is created (the process time again depends on the amount of user data), and proceed to the next step.

    Stage 4: Deploying Backup

    The final stage of the procedure is also nothing complicated. The only caveat is that it is desirable to connect a desktop computer to an uninterruptible power supply, and a laptop to a charger, since a power outage during backup deployment can lead to a failure.

    1. On the target PC or laptop, configure booting from a CD or flash drive, then connect the bootable media that we created in Step 1 to it. Turn on the computer. the recorded AOMEI Backupper should load. Now connect the backup media to the machine.
    2. In the application, go to the section “Restore”. Use the button “Path”, to indicate the location of the backup. In the next message, just click Yes.

    In the window “Restore” a position appears with the backup loaded into the program. Select it, then check the box next to the option. “Restore system to other location” and click “Next”.

  • Next, read the markup changes that recovery from the image will bring, and click “Start Restore” to start the deployment procedure. You may need to change the volume of the partition. this is a necessary step in the case when the backup size exceeds those of the target partition. If a solid-state drive is allocated to the system on a new computer, it is recommended to activate the option “Align partitions to optimize for SSD”.
  • Wait for the application to restore the system from the selected image. At the end of the operation, the computer will restart, and you will receive your system with the same applications and data.
  • Conclusion

    The procedure for transferring Windows 10 to another computer does not require any specific skills, so even an inexperienced user can handle it.
