Setup through standard tools

You can use basic options in your operating system to adjust microphone quality settings. They allow you to increase/decrease the volume, adjust the gain, turn on noise reduction and so on. There are the following ways to open the settings window.

The first option is through the icon on the taskbar. To do this, right-click on the speaker icon and select “Recording Devices” from the menu:

The second option is to open “Start Menu” and in the search line type the name of application “Sound”:

And the complete method is as follows:

Now let’s move on to the settings. Under the “Recording” tab you will see a list of all connected devices for sound recording. To open the properties of any device, you must either double-click on it with the right mouse button or select the device and click on “Properties”:

Open the properties of the microphone and get acquainted with all the possibilities. In the “General” tab, you must check the connection. In the checked item you should check “Use this device (on/off)” option in the “Record” menu.)”. Because of this, this particular microphone will act as the primary microphone every time you turn on your computer.

Open the “Listen” tab. Here is a useful option that allows you to test the sound yourself and without recording. Check by turning on the “Listen from this device” setting. After applying the option you will hear your voice through the headphones. This way you can determine whether the volume should be increased or decreased, what distortion and interference occur during a conversation.

The “Levels” tab allows you to adjust the microphone sensitivity and gain. Use the upper slider to change the overall volume. It is not recommended to set it to maximum if a cheap or low-quality microphone is used. strong distortions and noise are possible.

Since we are already listening, we can adjust the appropriate sensitivity in real time. The lower slider allows you to amplify the incoming signal. We suggest to increase this setting if even at 100% your microphone is very quiet.

It is not recommended to increase the microphone gain above 20 dB. it can spoil the quality. Also the background will be captured. keyboard sounds, extraneous conversations and so on, which will greatly interfere with the conversation during gaming or normal communication.

Under “Enhancements” all options are disabled by default. With a good microphone and properly chosen volume level noise suppression, echo cancellation, extraneous sound removal will not be needed. But if you notice when listening that the microphone is phoned and generally not responding properly to incoming sounds, then you can turn on a few enhancements.

If the microphone hisses and gives out a constant background ECHO, then try to turn on “Noise reduction” and “Echo cancellation. However, you will have to make the microphone level louder, as these improvements muffle the voice and distort it slightly. But extraneous noises will definitely disappear!

To reset the default settings, simply check the “Disable all sound effects” box and apply the changes.

The last tab “Advanced” allows you to add or decrease the sample rate. Basically, this parameter has more impact on voice recording. The higher the bit rate and frequency, the bigger the size of the recorded file and the higher the sound quality. However, this parameter has no effect on conversations over the Internet.

At the end of the setup, open the “Listen” tab again and disable listening from the device so that you don’t have to listen to your voice in the background all the time.

If you want to know how your voice will sound on the recording instead of in parallel with you, you can check this with the standard app:

Tuning through the driver

External or built-in microphone in Windows 7 can also be configured with a utility from the manufacturer of the sound card. Let’s find out how to do it and where to find this software.

We will focus on the Realtek HD utility, as these are currently the most common on-board sound cards on all motherboards.

You can run it either through the “Control Panel”, or by double-clicking on the appropriate icon. The interface and button layouts may vary depending on the motherboard manufacturer:

Setting up the microphone in Skype/Skype

Most Skype microphone problems are caused by the program incorrectly identifying the default microphone (i.e.е. is not working with the right microphone. It happens even if you have only one physical microphone).

In recent versions of Skype for Windows 10. settings are hidden ✌ (in my opinion). To find them, you need to click on your profile icon at the top left of the window, then select settings and get to the “Sound” section. There, select your microphone and check the sound.

If you have an older version of Skype (I believe that it is much more convenient for the computer). then in the sound settings a little more options. I recommend to tick the option “Allow automatic microphone setting” (so the program automatically selects the volume level).

Nevertheless, you can adjust the sensitivity level manually as well (it’s best to talk to someone and move the slider to the right position).

If you have a problem when you talk (bad hearing, grinding, stuttering and shaking of the voice, etc.), pay attention to the following:

  • download and install the latest version of Skype (Official site). I don’t like the design of the latest versions, but I do admit that the stability and quality of the connection is improving;
  • check your internet connection and speed. to see if any packets are getting lost. You can find out how to check your internet speed from this article: https://ocomp.info/kak-uznat-skorost-interneta.html (the thing is, if the quality of the connection is poor and the speed is low. Skype automatically reduces the sound quality to leave the connection active!);
  • check if your computer is slow (no CPU or hard drive load, etc.).). I told you why your computer is slow and how to find the cause in this article: https://ocomp.info/pochemu-tormozit-pc.html.

By the way, if you have a quiet sound and can not hear well, try to use special utilities to increase the volume.

A few ways to test and check the microphone on your computer

Hi there! Today let’s talk about the topic: checking the microphone on your computer. how to know if this device works and how to know if it’s turned on. And also what program can test the sound quality on your PC. These recommendations are also applies to headphones and microphone. the device is essentially the same.

We will check the sound recording device using the operating system tools. Everything is done similarly in Windows 7 or 8, so I will explain using Windows 10 as an example.

Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select “Recording devices” option. This will open a list of microphones in Windows, both physical and virtual devices.

As versions of operating systems are different and yours may be newer, items may be different. If it is, right click in the tray and select

“Open Sound Options.”. then in the upper right corner click “Sound Control Panel” and go to the “Recording” tab and look at our devices.

If you say something into the membrane of your device, the indicator next to it in this list will react to the noise by showing the level of the input signal. If there is no response, your device is not connected, broken, or designated as a default recording device. Click on it with the mouse and choose the appropriate option.

Also check that the device properties in the “levels” tab do not have the icon disabled as shown in the picture below, if you have this, then turn it on.

Open the software list, go to the “Standard” tab and select the “Record” application or go to the “Voice Recording” application. Press the red button and say a few words. The saved file can be played back with any media player or in the application itself.

This way you can also evaluate the quality of the sound you record with your device. The impression is purely subjective, as there are no units for measuring sound quality. Accordingly, there is no software designed for this purpose.

As for checking the recording device online, I do not recommend using this method.

Today there are many dubious sites which ask for access to your PC, but plant some malicious miner and wonder where the entire performance has gone.

But, before all these actions, I recommend that you first visit the article “Where to connect the microphone to the computer“, then “How to configure it on a Windows 10 computer” and check if everything is done correctly, then return to this post to check.

I would be grateful to anyone personally who shares this post on social media. See you tomorrow!

Checking the microphone

Now that you have made sure that the microphone is on and you have set its volume to the right level you can test it.

If all of the above steps are performed correctly, but you are unable to record, it is recommended to test the microphone on another computer, if possible. It may just not be working.

If the microphone works perfectly, you should check the sound card driver.

Testing the recording device

Preparation is complete. Now we check if the device works in Windows 10 and listen to the sound quality recorded through it, if there are no problems.

Press Win I for the system settings.

Click on the Privacy section.

Allow applications to access the sound recorder.

Use Search or Start to access the “Voice Recording” program.

Click on the microphone icon and say something.

Stop the capture, then click the “Play” button to listen.

It is worth free to check the microphone online

The method described above is the easiest and probably the only one I approve. I do not recommend that you check your hardware with third-party services that make this possible.

One of the rules of network security is to keep external permissions to a minimum and only allow access if absolutely necessary.
