How to take a screenshot of your Android phone

How to take a screenshot on your computer or mobile device

How you take screenshots varies by device and operating system. This article will tell you how to take a screenshot on almost any computer, tablet or smartphone.

Android 4.0 and higher

Owners of gadgets with the fourth or newer versions of Android can take a screenshot by simultaneously pressing the power and volume down buttons. Hold this combination for a few seconds, then you will see the characteristic image on the screen.

The screenshot can be found in the system app which acts as a photo gallery on your device. For example, on Nexus, Pixel, Google Play Edition and other series devices with pure Android on board, screenshots appear in the Screenshots folder in Google Photos.

Older versions of Android

Unfortunately, the Android system to version 4.0 did not have a built-in screenshot feature. The problem was solved by smartphone manufacturers. For example, in some even older Samsung phones you can take screenshots by pressing the power and home buttons simultaneously.

If this combination does not work in your case, it is worth turning to Google: it is possible that your device can also take screenshots out of the box, but with its own tricky combination.

If the search was not successful, try a third party program like Screenshot (for Android 2.3 or newer) or No Root Screenshot It (for Android 1.5 and newer OS versions).

In addition, if you have a device with root, you can install any modified Android firmware (for example, LineageOS) with the implemented function of creating screenshots.

appbox fallback

To take a screenshot on any iPhone or iPad, hold down the power key for a second and along with it the home key. The screenshot created in this way can be found in the standard Photos app.

How to take screenshots on Android: Samsung devices

In some cases, these alternatives can be used in addition to the three main methods discussed above. In other cases they completely replace the standard Android options. You’ll find most of the examples below.

How to take a screenshot on Samsung, Huawei and other phones

Despite the fact that many manufacturers are trying to show off and make their own way to create a screenshot on their smartphones, there is a universal solution.

As a rule, on almost all smartphones there is a combination of power and volume reduction keys that must be pressed simultaneously. Sometimes you need to hold them, and sometimes just press. The second option seems more logical to me, because it allows you to take a screenshot at a strictly defined moment. This is especially true when you take a screenshot in a game or in a video clip. A combination of the power button and the volume up button also works less often, but the methods suggested by the manufacturers are even more convenient.

For example, Huawei suggests taking a screenshot by tapping twice on the screen with the knuckle. It is convenient and fast, but sometimes it does not work the first time. And by outlining the area with your knuckle, you can make a screenshot of the embossed portion of the screen.

Samsung has for centuries offered its own alternative to the standard keyboard shortcut. To take a screenshot, you have to run your hand from one edge of the screen to the other. I’m not comfortable doing this, but as an alternative it counts.

Other manufacturers suggest doing it with the side menu, or squeezing the smartphone, if it has this option, but still the easiest and most convenient way is to press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously.

Manufacturers need to urgently change the approach to displays, but they do not see the problem

Unable to save a screenshot

It happens that Android blocks the creation of screenshots in sensitive usage scenarios

But there is another scenario when a screenshot is not created. In this case a notification appears on the screen saying “Unable to take a screenshot. Unable to take a screenshot of personal content”. As a rule, such a notice appears when you try to make a screenshot of some highly sensitive data, which is usually not allowed to be disclosed.

This can happen when you try to take a screenshot of your account in the banking app. Android thinks it’s sensitive information and you can’t screenshot it. Most likely, this restriction is not from the user, but from a malicious app. But whatever it is, you can’t legally get around it. And the only way to make a screenshot of the bank application’s cabinet is to get ROOT rights, i.e. to hack your smartphone.

As it happens, if one company is at the center of a scandal, they keep chasing it. Maybe it’s just a coincidence or closer attention, but it’s hard not to see this happening. For example, Samsung First it cheated with the refresh rate of the new Galaxy S22, then something went wrong with the cameras, then it was accused of cheating on performance tests for several years. Now the problem comes from outside and concerns hackers who have stolen security-related data. What is it and should users be worried?? Let’s explore.
