The Windows 8 operating system was a pleasant surprise for many users. A completely different start screen, a beautiful Metro tiled interface, quick boot of the system, smooth opening of program windows. But all this takes certain system resources and affects the speed of the operating system itself.
Let’s look at several ways that can help speed up your computer or laptop with Windows 8 installed.
Disable visual effects and gadgets
The first way is to turn off visual effects and gadgets for the desktop. Visual effects allow you to make the display on the screen, pleasing to the eye: a smooth transition between windows, text display, closing the program window. To configure them, press the WinE key combination, the explorer will open. Right-click on the “Computer” button in the menu on the left, and select “Properties”.
In the “System” window, on the left side, open “Advanced system settings.”
The “System Properties” window opens. On the Advanced tab, select Performance and click the Options button.
In the next window “Performance Parameters” on the tab “Visual Effects” mark the item “Ensure the best performance” with a marker. Or you can select “Special Effects” and check off a couple of the necessary items. Click Apply and OK.
Although there are no gadgets in this operating system by default, those who are used to using them in earlier versions of Windows install gadgets for the Windows 8 desktop. They help when working on a computer, but they also take some of the system resources.
If you cannot do without them, leave a couple of necessary ones, and it’s better to remove the rest from the desktop.
Increase virtual memory
The second way is to increase virtual memory. Open the “Performance Settings” window, as described in the paragraph above, then go to the “Advanced” tab, and in the “Virtual memory” section, click “Change.”
Please note that the paging file is not located on the hard drive partition where the OS is installed. The size of the paging file should be 2 times the size of RAM. Select a disk partition and set the page file size. Click OK. Return to the previous window and click “Apply” and “OK” there. Reboot the computer.
To increase virtual memory, you can also use a regular USB flash drive and ReadyBoost function. Follow the link and read how it can be configured.
Set sleep or hibernation
The third way is to use sleep mode or hibernation mode. If you use your laptop several times during the day, you do not have to turn it off constantly. To do this, configure the mentioned modes.
In sleep mode, all open files and programs are stored in RAM, in hibernation mode. on the hard drive. When the computer goes into one of the modes, less energy is consumed, and when you resume working with the computer, the system starts almost instantly.
Hibernation mode is designed more for laptops. The computer can be put into sleep mode.
Right-click on the battery icon in the tray and select “Power”.
Now in the menu on the left, click on the item “Action when closing the lid.”
Next, you need to configure what will happen when certain actions are performed. Click Save Changes.
If you do not have enough space on your hard drive, then hibernation mode can be turned off completely. This will free up at least 2 GB of memory. Follow the link and read how to do it.
Removing programs from startup
The fourth way is to eliminate unnecessary programs from startup. This will increase the loading speed of the operating system. Press the WinR key combination. In the “Open” field, write msconfig, and click “OK.”
Next, go to the “Startup” tab. If there is a list of programs that start with the operating system, uncheck it, click “Apply”, “OK” and restart the computer. I need to follow this link: “Open task manager.”
In the task manager, select the unwanted program with the mouse and click “Disable”.
The fifth way to speed up the operating system is to disable indexing. This is useful for those who do not use the search on the partitions of the hard drive, or through the Start menu. This service scans and tracks files on the computer, respectively, using its resources.
Click the WinE combination, Explorer opens. In the left part, select “Computer” and right-click on it, select “Management” from the context menu.
Now on the right side, expand “Services and Applications” and click on “Services”. The list should open, find the Windows Search service in it and double-click on it.
In the next window, in the “Startup type” field, select “Disabled”, click on the “Stop” button, then “Apply” and “OK”.
The sixth way is to clean and defragment your hard drive.
How to defragment a hard disk using the built-in utility in Windows. I wrote, read the article by clicking on the link. The program for defragmenting the hard drive Auslogics Disk Defrag also perfectly copes with the task.
You can use the CCleaner program or Auslogics BoostSpeed to clear the operating system of various debris, temporary files, empty folders, old registry entries. Both of them are free, by clicking on the links, you can download them, read about the installation and description.
Use the methods described above, and your laptop or computer will work faster.
