How to set up two computers via a router

How to create and configure a local network between two computers

Good day!

Eh, if in the 90s a computer was a luxury, but now many people have not one, but several computers/laptops at home.

If you connect computers in a local network (which will even have only 2 devices). you can get undeniable advantages:

  • The ability to open files located on another PC, to work with them, etc.д. Now you don’t need to run back and forth with a flash drive or a disk;
  • the possibility to make a network printer (scanner, CD/DVD drive, etc.).). and use it from all PCs in the local network;
  • the ability to play network games (this is a separate and most interesting feature, about which we can talk a long time).

In this article, I wanted to review the issue of building a home local network (and its settings), which will be useful for all novice users.

I will go step by step, starting with the question of connecting one PC to another, then examine the configuration of Windows, and how, in fact, to share (make available to the local network) folders, printers, etc.д.

Setting up a local network via a Wi-Fi router

To set up a local network between two (you can have more) computers. Share a specific folder or local drive. To be able to share files.

Before we set up the network on the computers, I decided to ping from one computer to the other to see if there is a connection between them. Learn more about pinging here. If you want to do that too, you need to go into router settings from one computer and see what IP address the router gave to the other computer in the network. I just wrote an article on how to see who is connected to your router, you can read.

Well, I’ll quickly write how to do it. Type 192 in your browser.168.1.1 (192.168.0.1) And go to the router settings. Go to “DHCP” and “DHCP Clients List. There we will see the devices that are connected to the router. See the IP address that is assigned to the other computer that we want to set up the local network with.

Now ping it. Click “Start” and in the search line type cmd, in the search results run the utility “cmd.exe”.

A window will appear in which write the command ping “IP address of another computer” and press “Enter”. Look at the results, if you see that the packet exchange is going on, then all is well, the network between computers is.

I think I will ping the laptop that is connected via Wi-Fi, and I see that no packets are being transmitted. If you can’t ping, your network won’t work. And then it started, it took me a long time to change different settings, until it came to me that I had ESET Smart Security installed on my laptop and computer, yup! It checks the network completely.

If in the process of setting up or working problems with the network connection, the first thing to do is to check and disable anti-viruses and firewalls. I also advise you to disable Windows Firewall.

Open the antivirus, go to the tab “Settings”. “Network.”. Choose “Change the computer’s network security mode,” and check “Allow sharing.”. Press “Ok”. ping again, everything works. Halfway done, let’s get on with it.

Plugged in the cable, but the connection without access to the Internet

And that could be. The problem looks like this:

This is interesting: “No access to the Internet. Address the root cause. Set up the Wi-Fi router to work with your ISP

First, you need to determine what the problem is. It can be caused by problems on the router side. On this subject see this article.

See also  The TV sees the router, but does not connect

But I’ll tell you this the easy way. If other devices are working fine from this router, and have internet on them, then the problem is most likely on the computer itself. I see :).

Go to Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections again and right click on Local Area Connection. Select Properties. Then highlight “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click Properties again.

Set your laptop to get IP and DNS automatically, then press OK.

But, do not forget that there may be, for example, and technical problems with the network card (it may simply burned out) and other very different reasons, which can cause a variety of problems.

The instruction is easy to follow, but it is not very small. I hope this works for some people.

Configuring the network bridge

Have Internet on the laptop. Connect the computer to the laptop with a network cable (to learn how to crimp a network cable, see article How to properly crimp an RJ-45 network cable). On the computer, the status of the Internet connection will be a network without access to the Internet. We need to make it so that there is access to the Internet.

To do this, go to Control Panel. Network and Internet. Network and Sharing Center (or right-click on the status of the Internet connection in the tray, and select “Network and Sharing Center”). Then select “Change adapter settings” on the right.

Hold down the Ctrl key and highlight the two connections. I have it Wireless network connection (through which the laptop is connected to the Internet) and Local network connection (this connection connects the computer to the laptop via cable).

Highlight the two connections and right click on one of them. Select “Bridge settings”.

Wait a while until the bridge settings will be created and we will have a new connection “Network Bridge”. And the two connections, wireless and LAN connection should get the status “Connected, Connected”.

If a message appears while creating a Network Bridge that you can’t continue because one of the connections is configured to share the Internet, then do this:

Right click on one of the two connections and click “Properties. Then go to the “Access” tab and make sure there is no checkmark next to “Allow other network users to use Internet connection”. If it is checked, uncheck it. Also check the other connection.

The computer, which is connected to the laptop via a network cable should appear internet, at least for me, it worked. I upgraded my computer to a newer antivirus and I no longer need the network bridge. If you also want to remove the network bridge, simply right-click on it and select “Remove”.

If you’re having trouble setting up and connecting, try turning off your antivirus. Very often they block all sorts of connections.

That is all I wanted to tell you in this article. You might need my advice.

Configuring the local network after joining computers in Windows 7

Let’s proceed to debugging the local connection on the two computers running “Windows” 7.

Configure the IP address and the workgroup

First we need to deal with the IP addresses of the computers on the local network:

On your keyboard, press R and Windows (the company logo). In the box, type the code ncpa.cpl. click on OK.

Go to the properties of the local connection

If you use a router, set the automatic forwarding

After setting up the IP addresses, let’s move on to debugging the workgroup of the computers:

Press Windows and R again simultaneously to open the “Run” window. There type the command sysdm.cpl and click on OK.

Proceed with changing the group name and computer name

Change the name of the computer

Configuring file sharing

Now you want to make all files on the machines visible, which means that you can access documents stored on the PC hard drives. How to do it:

  • Run the “Control Panel” through the “Start” menu (the item is in the list on the right).
  • Go to “Network and Sharing Center.

Go to “Network and Sharing Center”

Go to change the sharing settings

Check if the “Windows Firewall” service is working

It is imperative that the firewall (“Windows Firewall”) is active on the local network. How to check if the screen is working:

Launch “Control Panel” via “Start. Go to the “Administration” block.

Turn on the firewall and set it to start automatically

Check your network

Now check if the LAN connection we just set up is working:

  • On the “keyboard” we press Windows and R. In the line, type the value cmd. Run the command.
  • Write the word ping in the black editor and the IP address of the other PC you are associating with. If it is a second PC on the local network, enter 192.168.0.2.
  • Press “Enter”. Looking at the result of the operation: in the parameter “lost” should be 0. If the value is set, everything is fine. If not check if you have set it up correctly. refer to the instructions above.

The value “Lost” should be 0

Configure the local network once the computers are connected

Move on to the next step: setting up the local network on both computers.

Configure the IP address

If you used a router to connect two computers, you need to configure the router to receive data automatically from the router on the network cards of both PCs:

Press “Win” and R at the same time. Write ncpa on the line.cpl. Click on OK.

Set the automatic fetching of IP and DNS

If you connected directly, you need to set specific IP addresses for the two PCs. Go to the same window with the IPv4 properties. In the window put the IP-address 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

In the settings of the second computer we set these parameters:

Change the names of the “comps” and the workgroup name

Now give each computer a “local” name and define a common workgroup:

Call the now familiar “Run” window with “Vin” and R. Write sysdm in the free space.cpl. Run the command.

On the “Computer Name” tab click on “Change”

computers, router

Change the name of your computer to something more understandable

Set up file and folder sharing and disable password protection

First we have to share documents between both computers. If you do not do this, whatever individual folders you make public (accessible to devices on the local network), no one will see them:

Open the “Run” window with a combination of “Win” and R. This time we type the word “control” and press “Enter” or “OK” in the window itself. This opens the “Control Panel” menu.

Type control in the window where you want the panel to open

Click on the last link at the top left

Turn on directory and file sharing on your computer

Setting up access to the local printer

Before setting up, you should make sure that the PC to which the printer is connected has all the printer drivers installed and that the computer is set up to run the printing device. If this is all there, move on to debugging local access:

  • Go to “Control Panel” and then to “Hardware and Sound” and “Devices and Printers. You should see all the printers connected to your PC.
  • Now right-click on the printer you want to share and click on “Printer Properties.
  • Here we are primarily interested in the “Access” tab: Check the “Share this printer” box.

Check the box next to “Share this printer”

Sharing Access to Specific Folders

Now that sharing is in place, make certain folders visible to gadgets on the local network. This is the easiest thing to do:

  • Find the right directory or file. Click on this document with the mouse.
  • In the gray menu with a list of actions hover your cursor over the “grant access” line.
  • Choose one of the two options for a homegroup. view only or both view and modify files.

Grant access to the necessary folders

Cooking

To network the desktop computers and other devices equipped with Ethernet network adapters, prepare

  • Twisted-pair cable with 8P8C (RJ-45) connectors. one for each device. You can buy the connectors separately and crimp the cable yourself. Use a direct crimping scheme to connect the computer-router type.
  • Router, which should have enough LAN ports for all computers on the network. If there are not enough ports, some machines will have to be connected via an additional network device. a switch. Or over Wi-Fi.

The order of connecting devices to the computer local network:

  • Plug one twisted-pair connector into your computer’s NIC and the other into one of the LAN ports on the router. Find out which ports are for LAN from the manual of your router.
  • If your apartment or office is connected to the Internet, connect your ISP’s network cable to the WAN (INTERNET) port of the router.

Port activity is indicated by flashing LEDs. On the fact that the signal is received by the PC network card, as evidenced by the blinking LED in the connector area.

Setting up your router

Let’s take LAN setup as an example of D-Link DIR 300 router.

See also  What to do if the computer does not see the disk

To open the control panel enter into the browser IP address bar of the router, which is listed on the bottom of the router or in its documentation.

To access the settings, enter your login and password. they are written in the same place as the IP.

Open the “Lan Setup” section. Under “Router setting” you can change the IP of the router to another one and activate the “DNS relay” option (use the router as a DNS server).

Under “DHCP server settings” check the box “Enable DHCP” if you do not want to assign an IP address manually to each device on the network.

Internet connection settings are set in the “Internet setup” tab. They are different for each provider, so we do not consider.

Setting up the connection on the PC (performed on each computer in the network)

  • If the computer did not get the IP address automatically (as we said, for automatic IP distribution the DHCP-server must be enabled on the router), assign it manually. The computer IP must be in the same address range as the router. So, if the IP of the router is 192.168.1.1, then the IP for the computer is chosen from the addresses 192.168.1.2. 192.168.1.255. If the router IP is 10.0.1.0, the computer is assigned one of the addresses 10.0.1.1. 10.0.1.255.
  • The subnet mask is set automatically. Its value depends on the IP class of your network.
  • The default gateway is the device through which access to the Internet (in our example is the router). In the field of the same name, enter the address.
  • As DNS servers, write the IP of the gateway (for this purpose, the option “DNS relay” must be activated on the router), the DNS provider or public DNS (for example, Yandex or Google).

When assigning the IP addresses, make sure that they are not repeated.

Checking the link

Tip! After configuring the connection on all computers, check whether they are connected. To do this, run a command line on a PC and ping the IP of the router and the neighboring machines.

For example, to check the connection between the computers with addresses 192.168.1.2 (PC-2) and 192.168.1.When the PC-3 is set to 3 (PC-3), execute ping 192 on PC-2.168.1.3.

Exchanging packets between them will indicate that the link is established.

Connect two computers, this is real?

The easiest way to connect the computers locally is to lay a cable (twisted pair) between them. Everything is simple, you insert the cord into the network card and set the settings. With this connection, you can not add more than two systems, and it is inconvenient to use wires.

Modern computers have cards with Wi-Fi support, the same technology is used in all laptops. Setting up a network without wires is also simple. After following a few steps, you can set up file sharing, Internet streaming or even playing games over the LAN.

Connections differ in technical terms. To establish a connection, there must be some equipment. At a minimum, these are network cards and a special cable. In addition, you can use a router and other additional modules (e.g. Wi-Fi).

the way to connect two computers over a wire (network cable)

Without a router you can connect only 2 computers Of course if you add a network card to each computer then more, but this is some kind of tin We will connect two computers with a cord.

Generally we connect the cord to the 2 computers, to the network card. Then go into the Network and Sharing Center. Change Adapter Settings. On the local network connection select the property. Find protocol version 4 and the same property. Our job is to keep the same subnet and the computer address can be anything. On one computer I put the address 192.168.1.1, and on the other 192.168.1.2. The default netmask is 255.255.255.0.

Press ok, on 2 computers and go to the network check.

If this doesn’t work, continue with the settings from method 1. I did it right after that, so it worked.

Make sure your firewall or firewall in your antivirus is not blocked (if it is).

Also, when you log on to the network may be at the top of the table, whether to allow files on the public network. Press yes.
