In this article, we will consider how to unlock the device from an iOS device:
- Connect the device to iTunes in DFU or Recovery Mode via a USB cable.
- Download the firmware for iPhone via iTunes and on the recovery screen, click on “Reestablish”.
- The program will automatically download the current version of iOS specifically for your model and restore it to the device’s memory.

In our practice, there have been cases when the owner forgot his password or for other reasons remained with a locked smartphone or computer. There can be several options at once: buying an iPhone in the secondary market, setting a password by a third party (friend or child who decided to play a trick), a commonplace human factor (you can forget the password or accidentally set the wrong combination of characters).
In this case, there are exactly two scenarios for using a locked iPhone. The simplest is the most obvious. is to sell the phone for parts. It is recommended to consider this option only as a last resort, as resetting the iPhone password. This is a simple matter, especially against the background of the Activation Lock function, which is extremely difficult to get around on your own.
The second option. Try resetting your iPhone password yourself. The most obvious method is the selection of the password from the simplest options (or, if the user has forgotten his own password, an attempt to remember it when selecting). This process is quite time-consuming and involves one unpleasant feature of the system. if the corresponding function is enabled, after the tenth incorrect entry from the device, all data is erased.
However, the counter of incorrect entries can be reset by normal synchronization of the device with the computer. But, since Apple has taken care of the security of its users’ data, it is only possible to synchronize the device with an authorized PC or Mac. So, if the iPhone has never been connected to your computer before, resetting the counter of incorrect entries will not work.
On the other hand, if the user does not even have a rough idea of what the lock code installed on the smartphone looks like, resetting the iPhone password with a simple selection will be almost impossible.
The options described below are associated with a complete reset of the device, so before performing these operations, you should create a backup of your iPhone.
If the smartphone is not tied to an iCloud account, in order to reset the password you will need to enter the iPhone in recovery mode (DFU or Recovery Mode).
If you enter the device into DFU mode, turn off the phone to the computer, then hold down the Power (power button) and Home (home) buttons for ten seconds, then release the Home button and hold Power until iTunes recognizes the iPhone in recovery mode.
To activate Recovery Mode, the Home button must be pressed while the iPhome is connecting to the computer. The smartphone should be turned off. After that, when the cable image and the iTunes logo appear on the device’s screen, in the program’s interface, click the “Restore” button.
In both cases, a complete reset of the device will be performed, so that after the recovery, the smartphone will be initially configured and a new password will be set. After that, the iPhone can be restored from a previously made copy.
If you have an iCloud account and a wireless network on your smartphone, you can reset the device remotely. iPhone will automatically connect to a familiar Wi-Fi network, if one is not available, you can use mobile networks LTE, 3G or (in extreme cases) Edge.
To do this, you need the “Find iPhone” application (in recent iOS versions are preinstalled on iPhone and iPad). The application is also available through the iCloud.com website web interface.
In the “Find iPhone” section on the site, select the desired device and click the “Erase iPhone” button. If you are using an iOS application, you need to select the device, click the “Actions” button and select “Erase iPhone”.
After that, reconfiguring the device, selecting a password and restoring from a copy will be available.
In addition to a complete reset in some versions of iOS, a forgotten password can be “restored” through an iCloud record.
In addition to the methods described above, provided that there is a JailBreak on the iPhone, there is a fairly archaic method for resetting the iPhone password. If the version of iOS below 4.0 is installed on the smartphone, then the file com.apple.springboard.plist will be available in the device’s folder / private / var / mobile / Library / Preferences. When editing a file and changing the PasswordProtected value from 1 to 0, the password will be reset. The password reset can also be caused by the removal of the keychain located in the / var / Keychains folder. Since version iOS 4.0, this method is irrelevant, and changing the key file will invariably entail a permanent device lock.
In addition to the usual four-digit password, the iPhone can be blocked by the Activation Lock function. This can happen if the old owner of the phone during the sale for some reason did not log out of his iCloud account.
In this case, when updating the firmware or resetting the device, a window will appear asking you to log in through your iCloud account. Activation Lock is available from iOS 7.
If something like this happens, the easiest way to reset the password is to contact the previous owner of the phone with a request to log out of your account. If this is not possible, then there are several options to get around Activation Lock.
In the case of iOS versions lower than iOS 7.1, Activation Lock is bypassed using VoiceOver. To do this, during the initial setup, you should select the language and country, then go into emergency call mode and dial 112, then make a call and immediately reset it with the Power button.
After that, when the device is unlocked, the contact list opens, where you need to create a new contact and press the Home button three times to call the VoiceOver function (if the corresponding “universal access” function is enabled). Next, add the contact to the black list twice. If it is not possible to re-lock, you will have to repeat the above steps to a new one.
If everything went well, the device’s home screen will open. At the same time, you can use all the functions of the iPhone except for cellular communications. The described method works most stably on iPhone 4, on later versions the chances of successfully bypassing Activation Lock in this way are significantly reduced. In addition, desktop icons may not work.
In addition, there is a way to bypass iPhone lock proposed by developers from SiriPort. To do this, redirect the request from the Apple server back to the device, where it reads the data and unlocks the Activation Lock.
To do this, just add the line 220.127.116.11 albert.apple.com to the hosts file and restore the device from DFU mode. The hosts file can be found in the etc folder; in the case of Mac OS, you should call up a quick transition using the ShiftCommandG key combination and enter / etc in the search window; if you are using Windows 7 or higher, the file is opened with the notepad C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc \ hosts command, executed via the command line (Start.search. cmd).
This method is also to some extent fictitious, since using a SIM card with a smartphone remains unavailable.
In the event that the owner decided to lock the device or the stolen iPhone fell into the hands of the user, it will be impossible to reset Activation Lock. At the same time, an inscription appears on the unlock screen that the smartphone was lost or stolen, and the owner’s phone and a “note” from him may also appear.
The described methods of circumventing protection are relevant only if the user has forgotten the password or the seller has not logged out of his iCloud account. The security of Apple technology is maintained at a fairly high level, so that in case of loss of the device, the user does not have to worry about the security of personal data.
Before buying an iPhone with your hands, the first thing you should do is check if the phone is tied to iCloud. This is done in the “iCloud” item of the smartphone settings. You can also check the device on the activationlock page of iCloud.com, for this you will need the IMEI number located in the “General” item. “About this device” phone settings.
All the instructions described are also valid for the iPad (attention should be paid only to the version of iOS).
The second significant class of devices for which you sometimes have to recover passwords. Apple desktop computers. MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, that is, all devices running OS X. How to deal with a lost password in this case can be found in our password reset instructions for iMac.
