The boot loader can also load other special modes, which depend on a certain chip or device, for example the EDL on Qualcomm chips which is used for emergency recovery of the device by loading a firmware image signed with Qualcomm public keys which are embedded inside the chip. We will consider the normal boot process.

Some devices use a mechanism seamless updates, it is also called A/B partitions. In this case the boot loader has to select correct current slot for booting. The essence of this mechanism is that some partitions are represented as two copies, for example /system_a and /system_b instead of the usual /system, instead of /vendor. /vendor_a and vendor_b. The purpose of this. faster and brick-proof system update devices, t.е. e.g. you boot into the system using slot A, you are going to update the device, choose the appropriate option in the settings and continue your work with the system in peace. The package is downloaded, but instead of rebooting into special upgrade mode and waiting for the firmware to be installed, it is immediately flashed, but not into the running system (it can’t be done) but into the second slot B: /system_b, /vendor_b and, if necessary, into other partitions. After flashing, the system flags that the next boot should be normal and should use slot B and prompts you to reboot. You reboot the device, the bootloader selects slot B and continues booting, after just a few seconds of waiting your new OS is loaded, flags check that the download was successful, the current system image works, it’s all good, so you can duplicate the current system in the second slot. In case the booting fails, the system will not put flags on success and the boot loader will understand that the new system does not work, you need to boot into the old slot, the damaged update is not pumped to it and you will continue to work with the device as if nothing has happened.

The normal startup continues. The bootloader looks for the /boot partition in the connected devices. This section contains the two components needed to start the system: the OS kernel. kernel, and the initial image of the file system. initramfs (in Android it is called ramdisk almost everywhere and I will furthermore refer to it as that). This is where the protection mechanisms of OS against modification or vice versa start working, their work is turned off in the case if our boot loader was unlocked. During booting, hash sum of data contained in the /boot partition is computed and compared with the reference hash, calculated and signed by the private key of the device manufacturer at the time of building the system and this signature should be successfully verified by the AVB key stored in TEE. In case of unlocked loader this check is not performed, i.e.е. the system will start any kernel and ramdisk, even if they are not signed by the device manufacturer.

Protection mechanisms continue. Then it checks if the integrity of the system partition to be loaded is intact as well. Ramdisk keeps the public verity_key, which private part is signed by the root hash in the dm-verity hash table for the system partition. Signature check is made and after that the transition to booting the system takes place. If the bootloader of our device is unlocked, then this check is also skipped.
