How to Install a Program on a Computer

I continue to write instructions for novice users. Today we’ll talk about how to install programs and games on a computer, depending on what kind of program it is and in what form you have it.

In particular, in order it will be described how to install software downloaded from the Internet, programs from disk, as well as talk about software that does not require installation. If you suddenly find something incomprehensible due to poor acquaintance with computers and operating systems, feel free to ask in the comments below. I can’t answer instantly, but I usually answer during the day.

How to install the program from the Internet

The easiest way to get the right program is to download it from the Internet, in addition to the network you can find many legal and free programs for all occasions. In addition, many people use a torrent (what is a torrent and how to use it) to quickly download files from the network.

It is important to know that it is best to download programs only from the official websites of their developers. In this case, you are more likely to not install unnecessary components and do not get viruses.

Programs downloaded from the Internet, as a rule, are as follows:

  • File with the extension ISO, MDF and MDS. These files are DVD, CD or Blu-ray disc images, that is, a “snapshot” of a real CD in a single file. We will talk about how to use them later in the section on installing programs from the disk.
  • A file with the extension exe or msi, which is a file for installation, containing all the necessary components of the program, or a web installer that, after starting, downloads everything you need from the network.
  • A file with the extension zip, rar, or another archive. As a rule, such an archive contains a program that does not require installation and just run it by unpacking the archive and finding the startup file in the folder, which usually bears the name program_name.Exe, or in the archive you can find a kit for installing the necessary software.

I will write about the first option in the next subsection of this guide, and begin right away with files that have the.Exe or.Msi extension.

Exe and msi files

After downloading such a file (I assume that you downloaded it from the official site, otherwise such files can be dangerous), you just need to find it in the “Downloads” folder or another place where you usually download files from the Internet and run it. Most likely, immediately after the launch, the process of installing the program on the computer will begin, as you will be notified of such phrases as the “Setup Wizard”, “Setup wizard”, “Installation” and others. In order to install the program on a computer, simply follow the instructions of the installation program. At the end, you will get the installed program, shortcuts in the start menu and on the desktop (Windows 7) or on the start screen (Windows 8 and Windows 8.1).

How to Install a Program on a Computer

Typical wizard for installing a program on a computer

If you run the.Exe file downloaded from the network, but no installation process started, and the necessary program just started, it means that you do not need to install it to work. You can move it to a folder convenient for you on the disk, for example Program Files and create a shortcut for quick launch from the desktop or the Start menu.

Zip and rar files

If the software you downloaded has the zip or rar extension, then this is an archive. That is, a file in which other files are compressed. In order to unpack such an archive and extract the necessary program from it, you can use the archiver, for example, free 7Zip (you can download here: http://7-zip.Org.Ua/ru/).

The program in the archive.Zip

After unpacking the archive (usually there is a folder with the name of the program and the files and folders contained in it), find the file in it to start the program, which usually carries the same.Exe extension. Also, you can create a shortcut for this program.

Most often, programs in archives work without installation, but if after unpacking and starting the installation wizard starts, then just follow its instructions, as in the version described above.

How to install the program from disk

If you bought a game or program on disk, as well as if you downloaded an ISO or MDF file from the Internet, the procedure will be as follows:

An ISO or MDF disk image file must first be mounted on the system, which means connecting this file so that Windows sees it as a disk. You can read more about how to do this in the following articles:

Note: if you are using Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, then to mount the ISO image, simply right-click on this file and select “Connect”, as a result, you can see the “inserted” virtual disk in Explorer.

Installation from disk (real or virtual)

If the drive did not start the installation automatically, simply open its contents and find one of the files: setup.Exe, install.Exe or autorun.Exe and run it. Then you just follow the instructions of the installer.

Disk contents and installation file

One more note: if you have Windows 7, 8 or another operating system on the disk or in the image, then firstly, this is not a program, and secondly, they are installed in several other ways, detailed instructions can be found here: Install Windows.

How to find out what programs are installed on your computer

After you have installed this or that program (this does not apply to programs that work without installation), it places its files in a specific folder on the computer, creates entries in the Windows registry, and can also perform other actions on the system. You can see the list of installed programs by following these steps:

  • Press the Windows key (with logo) R, in the window that appears, enter appwiz.Cpl and click OK.
  • You will see a list of all installed by you (and not only you, but also the computer manufacturer) programs.

In order to remove installed programs, you need to use the list box, highlighting the program you no longer need and clicking “delete”. Details about this: How to remove Windows programs correctly.

Everything in our life once happens for the first time. If you do not give in to difficulties, if you do not fear the unknown, everything will surely turn out, and you can become a real pro from an inexperienced user.

Knowledge about installing applications is sure to come in handy

If you are personally tired of being called a stubbornly “teapot,” because you do not yet have perfect computer skills, prove to everyone that you are ready to move forward not with a tortoise move, but by leaps and bounds, confidently mastering new knowledge.

Begin by mastering the instructions on how to install the application on your computer, so that you can later install on your own any software that you feel you need.

Preparatory work

The installation is accompanied by a certain algorithm, which for almost all varieties is identical. If features arise, they are completely insignificant, even a beginner can easily figure them out.

It is more important for you to first fully understand for yourself the basics of how to install the downloaded program on your computer, and more precisely, how to prepare for the installation process so that it runs smoothly and does not provoke any problems.

Download boot file

If you have a need to install some kind of utility, drive its name into the search bar. Open sites that are ready to offer you an application for download.

Tune in to the fact that on these sites may be located not one link, but two at once. Of course, it’s hard for you as a beginner to visually determine which link is right for you.

But this does not matter, pay attention to the information located next to the links. They indicate for which operating system the program is intended, and also focuses on the capacity of the OS.

To understand what specific operating system and how much bit is installed on your computer, right-click on the “Computer” icon, and then go to the “Properties” line. In the window that opens, you will find the information you are interested in.

Now you can click on the download link that matches the parameters that you just defined for yourself.

The download process is also different. Some browsers automatically upload files to the Downloads folder, while other browsers request information where you would like to save the boot file.

The Downloads folder is easy to find if the program was automatically saved to it. Open “Computer”, on the left side you will see the desired “Downloads” folder, click on it, after which it will open immediately.

In the Downloads folder you will find all downloaded programs

Additional recommendations

When downloading a boot file, pay attention to whether the program is free or paid, it is designed for constant use or only for a short period of time (most often for thirty days).

Of course, it is optimal to find a program that is both free and capable of working as long as you need it.

After downloading any boot files from the Internet, it is useful to check them with an antivirus program. Most often, the antivirus is configured to automatically check any downloads, but it will not be superfluous to carry out additional checks. In this way, you simply protect your computer from unexpected infection.

It is advisable to check the downloaded program for antivirus

Software Installation Rules

It is also important to understand for yourself that the boot file can be in different formats, respectively, and the installation process of the desired program will be slightly different.

You can install the program, having available files with the extension “exe” or “msi”, as well as if you were able to download the archive. The name of the boot file can be completely different, so it does not carry a fundamental value.

Installing programs from a boot file with the extension “exe” or “msi”

If you downloaded the boot file with the extension “exe” or “msi”, the installation algorithm will be identical. To start an independent installation, simply double-click on this file.

The installation process will be accompanied by additional tips, recommendations, so it is important to complete all steps without haste.

Some programs at the start of the installation may ask you which installation mode you prefer. Practical experience demonstrates that there is a normal mode and advanced.

Considering that you are just learning how to install programs on a computer, give up the advanced installation option, because there you need to have some knowledge and some practical skills. For the initial use of any program, normal mode will be enough.

After that, the program will ask you to confirm your agreement with the license terms of use, after which it will ask you to specify the folder in which it is preferable to install the program.

Agree to the license terms of the program agreement and click on

In principle, during the installation process, the system will independently propose a folder, just like its name, so you can agree with such suggestions.

The installation process will continue further. At some point, a request may again follow asking you to indicate the language in which you would like to use the program, as well as clarify how important it is for you to set a shortcut on the desktop.

Some programs are installed with a little cunning, in a great partnership with advertising, which, unfortunately, in some cases can turn out to be unpleasant surprises for you, filling the system with extra “garbage”.

If a window appears in which you are prompted to install a new search, change the home page, download and prioritize a new browser, you should know that this is all real business, which has nothing to do with installing the program.

For this reason, if you find such offers, before clicking “Next”, uncheck all the checkboxes that are installed automatically next to all kinds of offers. Only after that continue the process by clicking the “Next” button.

Installing programs from the archive

If you downloaded an archived file from the Internet, the installation process may be slightly different.

It should be noted that if you have not previously taken care of downloading the archive, and you did not have it among the existing programs, then you will have to first install the archivers, and only then use them successfully, including when installing individual programs.

If you downloaded the program in the archive, first install the archiver

If the archiver is successfully installed, move the mouse to the boot file with the archived program, right-click on it. At this moment, a context menu will appear in which find the line “Extract files” or “Extract files with a specific folder”. You can use both the first sentence and the second, after which the process of unzipping will start.

When such a process is successfully completed, you will find a file with the extension “exe” or “msi” in the folder, which will allow you to act according to the algorithm described above.

So, the process of installing programs is simple, if you first study all the recommendations, you will follow the installation algorithm. All this will allow you to very quickly cross the line of the “teapot”, rise to a new level of PC ownership.
