How to find the disk in your computer

What to do if the computer can’t see the internal hard drive

Follow these steps in order. If the first one does not help, go to the second one, and so on.

The disk is not displayed in BIOS

If you just plugged the hard drive, check if you did it correctly. Find official instructions for your motherboard and hard drive on the manufacturer’s web-site and follow the recommendations.

If you are trying to install Windows XP or an older version and the system reports that there is no hard drive, make sure that the BIOS is set to IDE hard drive mode compatible with this operating system. Find in your BIOS the SATA Operation setting (SATA Mode, SATA Configuration, or something similar). Set the IDE as the value, save your changes, and restart your computer.

If possible, check if the hard drive works by connecting it to another PC. If it works, check your motherboard or other computer components. If not, you can take it to a service center.

The disk does not show up in Windows

Make sure the disk is enabled in your BIOS setup. To do this, reboot the computer and, as soon as the machine starts, press the F2 or Del key (the right key is usually displayed on the screen) until you get to BIOS.

Then find the Disk Management section (Storage Configuration, Drive or something similar) and make sure the hard drive you need is activated. It should say Active, On or something similar. Save your changes and reboot your PC.

Make sure Windows has correctly prepared the disk for use. First open a command prompt window (Windows R keys), then type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter. Read all warnings carefully to avoid accidentally formatting the drive or changing any data on it.

If you see a drive without a volume label in Disk Management, this might be a conflict. Then right click on the disk and assign a drive letter using the appropriate option in the context menu. Then reboot the computer.

If you see a new disk labeled “Uninitialized” in the same menu, right-click on it and choose “Initialize Disk” and follow the Windows prompts. Once the drive is initialized, right-click on the drive again to activate the context menu, select “Create simple volume” and follow the system instructions. Once finished, restart your PC.

If any of the values from the list is enabled, it has “Enabled” against it, if not. “Disabled”. Accordingly activate “CD-ROM Boot”. Below list of possible activations is option “Boot Order”, which should be entered to change the sequence of boot locations. The default list is headed by the hard disk drive of the notebook, to change the list, press “F6” to move “CD/DVD ROM” up to the first position. One of the benefits of this program is its ability to convert master boot record from MBR format to GPT format without losing information

In addition to these utilities, you can find other tools designed for working with hard drive partitions on the Internet.

In spite of all variety of utilities for work with hard disks, it is better to stop at one, study it and use it in your work, because incorrect use of programs can lead to deleting important data accumulated during many years of work.
