How To Enter Ipad Into Dfu Mode
Putting any iPhone or iPad into DFU mode (with a mechanical Home button)
Follow these steps in sequence:
Launch iTunes and connect your phone or tablet to your computer.
That’s all, you can safely start restoring the firmware! The only thing, to avoid mistakes, use only original wires. Of course, non-certified ones also know how to charge (if they are used correctly), but they do not cope with software updates very well.
By the way, when transferring to DFU, iOS devices do not show any signs. That is, the screen is completely black, nothing is written on it, there are no identification marks and no characteristic sounds are reproduced.
Only iTunes will inform you about the successful result of all performed manipulations. Here is a sign
How to enable DFU mode on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR?
The devices are new, but the entrance to the Device Firmware Update mode is carried out in the same way (just like in eights and iPhone X).
However, as Malakhov says, do not rush to switch.
I hope it will be a little easier this way.
So, we enter the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR into DFU:
Turn on iTunes and connect the phone to the computer.
Let me remind you that this instruction is suitable for any iPhone starting from iPhone 8. We use!
Dfu mode for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Instructions!
Hoping for something new? In vain. Nothing changed.
Therefore, if you are a happy owner of an iPhone 11 (Pro Max), then I can only envy you to transfer your smartphone to DFU mode, use the instructions in the previous subtitle.
Dfu mode how to input or output iPhone and iPad
Good time! All you need to know about the DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is that it allows you to enter your iPhone or iPad into a state where it is possible to completely restore the iOS system after this operation, your gadget will be like new. No, scratches and scuffs will not go anywhere, here you will not need to get rid of something more serious by simply restoring the firmware via DFU. But inside the device will be clean.
Why is this necessary at all? Various software glitches, correct removal of jailbreak, beta versions of software, demo iOS firmware, all this can be cured and fixed only by a complete reinstallation of the system. Which, in turn, cannot be performed without entering this mode.
As you can see, DFU is a useful thing. And now is the time to learn how to use it all. One two Three. Go!
How to put iPhone 7, iPhone 8 and iPhone X into DFU mode?
A small update to the article related to the release of the iPhone 7 (Plus), iPhone 8 (Plus) and iPhone X. As you know, the Home button in these models has ceased to be mechanical (in the top ten it was removed altogether) and is no longer pressed as before. How now to enter the FEFU?
It’s very simple, here’s a short instruction:
Launch iTunes and connect iPhone to computer.
Congratulations, your iPhone has entered DFU mode, you can proceed to restore the firmware.
We enter DFU mode without buttons, i.E. Programmatically
Unfortunately, the previous methods may not always work, because they are based on using the Home, Power and volume down buttons, but what if they don’t work? Remain without DFU-mode and, accordingly, without the ability to restore the software? There is nothing of the kind. We need:
Computer and sync wire.
Download and install redsn0w. In the window that opens, select Extras.
Followed by DFU IPSW and indicate the previously downloaded official firmware.
We wait for a while and a modified software file appears on the desktop.
Now, if you specify this file when restoring iOS, then you do not need to hold down any Home or Power buttons, the DFU mode will automatically enter.
How to enter iPad into DFU mode [Instructions]
Dfu (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode differs from the normal recovery mode in that it bypasses the operating system and reflash directly. As a result of flashing in DFU mode, you will receive an installed fresh version of iOS on your iDevice.
This is the surest method to reflash and can be recommended to everyone who has errors in iTunes during normal recovery. Such errors often occur on those iPads that have undergone the Jailbreak procedure, but the user still wants to reflash the iPad (traces of jailbreak, in this case, as with normal recovery, will disappear).
Flashing via DFU mode is possible on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch of any model. Below I will write about the iPad, but on the iPhone and iPod Touch, everything is done the same way. Before flashing in DFU mode, I recommend putting the device on charge for at least 15-20 minutes, just in case. So that during the flashing it does not happen so that the device turns off due to an uncharged battery.
How to enter DFU Mode on iPad (DFU Mode iPad)
1. Close iTunes on your computer.
2. Connect iPad to computer.
3. Turn off the iPad completely by long holding the Power button and moving the Shutdown slider
4. Press the Home and Power buttons for exactly 10 seconds.
5. Release the Power button, but keep holding Home until the computer displays a new USB device (approximately 10-15 seconds). This may not happen in this case, hold the Home button for 20-30 seconds just in case.
6. Ipad screen in DFU Mode will be black, don’t expect it to turn on.
7. Launch iTunes. Next, you need to agree with iTunes (note that most likely iTunes will want to check if you have the latest software).
8. There are now two options:
A) To flash, hold down the Shift button (in OS X “option”) and click on Restore iPad / iPod / iPhone (Restore). In the file selection window, specify the firmware file you want to use (it, of course, must be downloaded before that). The current firmware file can be downloaded from here.
B) You can just press the button “Restore iPad”. In this case, iTunes will simply tell you:
And after pressing the button “Rebuild and update” he will download the latest firmware himself and start restoring it.
Option A is preferable to option B, since you will have firmware on your computer in case of any errors. In option B, each time the firmware will be downloaded again.
All iPad firmware in DFU mode has started. In option B, it will start when iTunes downloads the firmware (depending on the speed of your Internet connection). You can track the download progress in the upper right corner of iTunes there is a button that opens a submenu with downloads.
An apple will appear on the screen of the iOS device, the device will reboot several times, and as a result, after 10 minutes you will see the welcome window of the iOS operating system. You can proceed to setting up the system.
Popular questions and answers on the topic “flashing iPad in DFU mode”:
Question: Which way of flashing is better?
Answer: I recommend starting with a normal recovery. If any errors occur in iTunes and their solution directly recommends using the DFU mode, then you can try it.
Question: How to get iPad out of DFU mode?
Answer: hold down the Home and Power buttons and hold them until signs of iPad life appear. But it happens that the device does not want to exit DFU mode. In this case, one thing remains to flash through DFU according to the instructions above. In this case, you will receive a full-fledged working device with fresh firmware.
Question: What to do if DFU mode does not turn on?
Answer: As I wrote above, the DFU mode does not give itself out on the screen. That is, if the screen is black, and iTunes sees the device and wants to restore it, this means that you have already enabled DFU mode.
Question: Is it possible to enter iPad into DFU mode without working buttons (for example, the Home button is broken)?
Answer: No, DFU mode will not be available. Fix the buttons in the service, and then restore. In any case, DFU is an edge case. Most likely, you will be able to carry out a flashing through the usual restore in iTunes.

How to get iPhone and iPad out of DFU mode
If we change our minds to restore our gadget, which is in DFU mode, then we can take it out of this mode by analogy with a forced reboot. Iphone 6s and older and iPad with a button “Home” just press and hold the button at the same time “Home” and the side (top) buttons until the Apple logo appears. On iPhone 7, this requires pressing and holding the Volume Down and Side buttons at the same time. But on the iPhone 8 and newer, as well as on the iPad Pro with Face ID, we proceed according to the following algorithm:
Press and quickly release the volume up key;
Sometimes a device connected to a computer does not start after a long hold on the side (top) button. In this case, release the button and press it briefly again. The gadget will launch normally.
I hope these tips will be useful in everyday use of your favorite devices from the company from Cupertino.
How to enter iPhone 7 into DFU
On iPhone 7, the following sequence of actions:
Press and hold the volume down button and the side button at the same time for 10 seconds;
How to restart iPad
To force restart all iPads except the iPad Pro 2018 and 2020, as well as iPhone 6s and older models, you need to simultaneously press and hold the top (side) button and the button “Home”. The screen will turn off, and then the logo in the form of a bitten apple will appear, the system will boot.
How to put iPhone and iPad into recovery mode
Sometimes updating the operating system of your favorite gadget over the air can fail. And sometimes the user forgets his password to unlock the gadget. In addition, other troubles with the operating system may happen, when the gadget suddenly starts to turn off, freeze, at startup it constantly shows the logo in the form of a bitten apple, without further loading the system, or hangs for a long time with an update progress indicator under this very logo.
In all these cases, it is necessary to restore the firmware using a computer. If this is a Windows PC, then you need to have iTunes installed on it. Itunes will also be required for Mac owners who do not have the latest operating system. Those lucky owners of apple computers with macOS Catalina do not have iTunes, and all actions are performed through the Finder.
Initially required “make friends” gadget with a computer. To do this, connect the device to a PC via USB and open iTunes or Finder on macOS Catalina. The computer prompts you to sync with your iPhone or iPad. We need to confirm our intention, and then, on the gadget itself, confirm our desire “Trust this computer” and enter the password to unlock.

Confirming our intent on iPad
In order to put the iPhone and iPad into recovery mode (aka Recovery Mode), you need to connect the gadget to your computer and open iTunes (Finder on macOS Catalina). Further, everything depends on the model of our device.
On iPhone 6s, first-generation iPhone SE (2016) and older, and all iPads with a button “Home” you need to simultaneously press and hold the button “Home” and a side (top) button. The screen turns off, then the Apple logo appears. In no case do not let go, we continue to hold the buttons until the gadget recovery screen is displayed.
The Recovery mode screen looks like this
On iPhone 7, press and hold the side button and the volume down button at the same time until the recovery screen appears. On iPhone 8 and newer, as well as on iPad Pro 2018 and 2020 (with Face ID), there will be the following algorithm of actions:
Press and quickly release the volume up button;
The computer will show a window in which it will offer to restore or update the iPhone.
Finder in macOS Catalina suggests iPhone repair or update
Itunes on Windows also offers to restore or update iPhone
To exit the recovery mode, if we change our minds to carry out any procedures with the gadget using a computer, you must press and hold the side (top) button until the screen goes out. Release the button and press it again to launch the gadget in normal mode. By the way, if the device remains connected to the computer via USB, then it is not necessary to press the side (top) button again. The device will turn itself on and start loading the operating system in normal mode.
How to put iPhone and iPad into recovery mode and DFU
Last week, an article appeared on our site on how to take screenshots on iPhone and iPad. In these cases, physical keys for controlling gadgets are used. So, in order to take a screenshot on gadgets with Touch ID, regardless of the mechanical button “Home” they use either a touchscreen, you must simultaneously press the side or top button (depending on the model) and the button “Home”. For gadgets with Face ID, you need to simultaneously press the side button (top button for iPad) and the volume up button. However, it should be noted that combinations of physical buttons for controlling mobile devices are also used for other necessary actions with them.
Sooner or later you will have to face it
In particular, to turn off devices with Face ID, temporarily disable this sensor itself in order to enter the unlock password, force the device to reboot, enter it into recovery mode and DFU mode, as well as call emergency assistance. Given that different generations of iPhones and iPads use different biometric identification methods, these combinations are different. The situation is aggravated by the fact that in the lineup of Apple smartphones, starting with the iPhone 7, not a mechanical, but a touch button is used “Home”, which leads to the inability to use it to force reboot and enter the device into recovery mode.
Here is the same article about screenshots that my colleague Alexander Bogdanov wrote. A cool beginner’s manual.
Accordingly, each gadget has its own combinations of these buttons. Let’s take a closer look at each option.

Note: If the Apple logo appears on the screen, it means that you held down the buttons for too long and you need to repeat all over again;
In DFU mode, the screen should not display anything (just a black display).
9. Please note: if any logos appear on the screen (Apple, iTunes with a cable, etc.), then you have activated the recovery mode, not DFU. If it works fine. If not, try to enable DFU mode again.

If, after all the manipulations done, you did not see the notification on the computer, then a mistake was made somewhere. Re-read the instructions again now as carefully as possible and try again.
What is DFU Mode?
Dfu Mode is a special low-level device mode, which does not use the operating system boot. Only technical information signals are sent to the device via the USB connection.
Previously, DFU mode was mainly used to get jailbreak on the first versions of iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Currently, the DFU mode is used only when restoring a password-protected iOS device (not to be confused with the Find iPhone Activation Lock), since in recent years hackers have released tools that require minimal user involvement.
Device in DFU mode displays nothing on screen, display is completely black.
After the computer recognizes the device is in DFU mode, the message Computer found iPhone in recovery mode appears.
Since 2007, with the development of iOS devices, Apple has changed the input (output) process of the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch to DFU mode three times. At the moment there are three instructions, each of which corresponds to a specific device.
How to enter or bring iPhone (all models) to DFU mode?
Is your Apple smartphone suddenly bricked? Then the first thing to do is put the device into a special low-level recovery mode called DFU (Device Firmware Update).
How to get iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6 Plus out of DFU Mode

How to put iPhone into DFU mode
We will look at two combinations that can put our iPhone in DFU mode. You can use any more convenient one. Before we begin, launch iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone or other gadget to it using the supplied cable. Do not use USB adapters, plug the cable into the computer itself. After the iPhone is connected to a computer running iTunes, we try to put the phone into DFU mode in one of the following ways:
Method 1. How to log into DFU
Putting iPhone into DFU mode. Method number 1
The easiest way to enter an iPhone into DFU is as follows: simultaneously hold down the Home button plus the Power button and count to 10. After 10 seconds of holding, release the Power button and continue to hold the Home button.
Method 2. Second attempt to enter into DFU
Step-by-step launch of DFU mode in iPhone. Method number 2
This method is called more correct, but it is more difficult for beginners. Turn off the iPhone and wait for the device to turn off to the end. Now we hold down the Power button and after counting up to 3 seconds in the place with it we hold down the Home button. Now holding Home Power, count to 10 and release Power, but continue to hold the Home button.
Itunes while starting DFU mode
When completing the iPhone input into DFU mode, it is useless to watch the phone screen, since it will simply be black, you need to look in the running iTunes program, which will detect the device with the DFU mode running and display the following message:
If you saw such a notification, and the only Restore iPhone button appeared in iTunes, now look at the phone screen, if the screen is black, then it is in DFU mode. If something was not pressed correctly, an image with the iTunes logo and a USB cable may appear, which means this is the Recovery Mode.
Dfu mode for iPhone and iPad input and output
Any iPhone, iPad, or multimedia iPod touch can be put into DFU mode. To be honest, I myself have never put my iPhone into DFU mode, they say that beginners do not succeed right away, to enter the device into this mode, you need to adapt, which we will do today. We’ll take the Apple iPhone as a model for experimentation. A feature of entering DFU mode is an absolutely black screen, and there are no identification marks on the iPhone screen, if the translation into DFU was accompanied at least by an inscription, as in the picture on the left, it would be a little clearer.
Besides DFU, there is another mode called Recovery Mode. What are these two modes for? They are mainly used to flash or restore the firmware of their iPhone. It also happens that an iPhone or iPad crashed and the iOS firmware does not start, in such cases, the Recovery Mode and DFU modes are used. To begin with, they always try the milder Recovery Mode, but if it does not help, then they already use the DFU mode.
Dfu is sometimes confused with Recovery Mode. Whatever you get confused, I will try to explain the difference between them:
- When you enter iPhone or iPad into Recovery Mode, the iTunes icon and USB cable appear on the device screen. When typing in DFU, the device screen displays a black display.
- It is not necessary to use iTunes to enter Recovery Mode. Dfu mode cannot be started without iTunes, I tried it myself.
- Recovery Mode is launched using the iOS operating system, and DFU bypassing the operating system, i.E. At the hardware level.
How to get iPhone into DFU mode
If, in the process of reading the instructions, you entered your working iPhone into DFU mode, you can bring the phone out of it by means of a regular restart by holding the Home Power buttons for 10 seconds. The phone will reboot and work normally. To exit the manually launched Recovery Mode, we used the same Home Power exit method for 10 seconds. When the cable is connected, after holding Home and Power for 10 seconds, the phone may not start, then press the Power button and it will turn on.
Once, after an unsuccessful attempt to update the firmware, an error got out and our iPhone went into a permanent recovery mode, from which only TinyUmbrella helped to get out. Perhaps if the iPhone does not exit DFU by rebooting, then you can try programs like TinyUmbrella or iReb. So far, I have not encountered a similar situation, but if I come across, I will definitely tell you.
