Ways for your tablet to access the World Wide Web
Tablets, gaining popularity among mobile computing devices, are created first of all by the companies-developers to satisfy the user’s need in web-singing. Naturally, in addition to this, they have a lot of features, are able to provide a variety of opportunities for their owners in the field of games and entertainment, can perform the functions of many other mobile gadgets, such as phones, navigators, media players. Nevertheless, the first question that arises among the new owners of tablet devices is how to connect your tablet to the Internet?
There are several ways to accomplish this task. Their choice depends, first of all, on the tablet model, its technical characteristics, as well as the operating system on which the gadget is based. And not the least role in this matter is played by the communication operator, chosen by the owner of the device.
Options how to connect the tablet to the Internet
Setting up the Internet connection on the device can be done independently by any user. There are quite a few ways to do this:
- Home router providing wireless Wi-Fi.
- Finding possible networks. For example, in cafes and parks, the Internet can be distributed completely free of charge and without a password.
- Using a personal computer or phone with access to a global network.
- Via Bluetooth.
- By modern mobile communications: 3G and 4G modems.
Wi-Fi connection on iOS
Connection on iOS is not actually different from Android. To connect your phone to Wi-Fi, go to Settings → Wi-Fi, activate the On slider. Select the desired network from the list, enter the password if necessary and you’re ready to connect to the internet. Setting up Wi-Fi on iOS is absolutely easy.
Starting with iOS 7, you can quickly connect your device to a wireless connection through Control Center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, tap on the Wi-Fi icon, select the desired connection from the list, enter the access code, and connect.
In the future, the phone will connect to the selected network itself, once in its coverage area. If you do not want to do this, click on the connection and select “Forget this network. You can also manually adjust things like IP address, DNS, and subnet mask. To do this, in the properties tab “Static.”Enter the necessary data.
To have access to the network everywhere, you need to connect to a mobile line with a SIM-card, if you have 3G or 4G module built in (Asus zenpad, DNS, Lenovo, Samsung Galaxy tab).
All mobile operators: Megafon, MTS, Beeline, Tele2, Yota, Motiv, Velcom, Letai have special rates with big traffic (there are packages from 5 GB to unlimited). All you need to do is to go to a mobile phone shop and buy a 3G, 4G, LTE SIM. Then you only need to connect and configure the device:
- Insert the SIM card;
- Activate the “Mobile Data”/”Data Transfer” function.
- The operator will automatically send the settings in the required format.
Most devices are set automatically, so you can immediately plunge into the “World Wide Web. If there are problems with the connection, you need to check the data of the operator. To use SIM for mobile communications, as in the phone, you can only if the tablet PC is equipped with a GSM module.
Sometimes the Internet signal is unstable, periodically loses and the gadget writes that it is impossible to carry out data transfer. This mostly happens in out-of-town areas and underpasses.
How to share Wi-Fi on a tablet
There are three options for how to give out Wi-Fi from an Android tablet:
- Via a Bluetooth connection. This is the way to distribute the received Wi-Fi signal via Bluetooth. To enable Bluetooth distribution, go to settings, then to the “Connectivity and Sharing” tab, then move the slider next to “Bluetooth modem” to the enabled position.
- Via USB cable. This option also distributes exactly the received hotspot, distributing it. Connect gadget to computer via USB cord, then in the same “Connect & Share” tab move slider to the option “USB Modem.
- By own Wi-Fi point. In this case, you can distribute only the mobile Internet, not the received Wi-Fi. To enable the function, open the settings and go to the “Wi-Fi hotspot” tab, turning it on.
Regardless of the method of distribution, the Internet is enough at best for simultaneous use on the source and the device that receives the signal. You should not count on a strong connection.
That’s all. I hope you will not have problems with the connection of the tablet to WI-FI. See you all later.
About the author of this site
Hi. My name is Peter. I am the author of this site. In it I talk about what I am very interested in. About tablets. In this blog I try to explain in simple language about the firmware, settings and innovations of all modern tablets. Also, most of the articles are about the Android OS, which I really like
Allows you to use the Internet in any place where there is coverage. 3G has long been the norm for all, in many cities, even 4G-connection is available, offering access speeds at the level of home. Depending on the need to purchase additional equipment and the complexity of the settings, you can use the access through the built-in SIM-card slot, mobile 3G router and external 3G modem.
Built-in 3G module
Most modern models of Android tablets, even the budget ones, are equipped with a 3G module, allowing you to use the device as a regular phone. If not every model can make calls, you can go online with any of them. You need to buy a SIM card from any Russian operator. After that choose the appropriate tariff for the Internet and make simple settings.
For settings on your Android tablet you need to go to Settings. Wireless Networks. Mobile Network. Create a new access point. Operators offer automatic settings, but in rare cases you must specify them manually. You can find out more about the parameters from the operator’s technical support.
For the settings on your iPad go to Settings. Cellular. Cellular data network and add the connection settings. Some Windows tablets have a built-in 3G module. When you connect for the first time, click on the Internet icon. select the name of the operator. adjust the settings and make the connection.
This and all other methods must be applied to those models of tablets that do not have a SIM-card slot.
Having bought such a router and inserted a SIM-card into it, log on to the Internet, using the information from the user’s manual or indicated on the router, to establish an Internet connection. You will need a computer for this. When you buy a device in a dealer’s shop, the settings are usually prescribed automatically. After procedure completes, connect to Wi-Fi network with your tablet.
You will need a little bit of work, and in addition to the tablet and the router you will need a computer or laptop. Note that not every router model is capable of using this method. If your tablet supports OTG mode, then proceed to the next step. Perform the following steps:
- Insert the modem into your computer. Wait till it is detected by the system. The proprietary setup utility should start up.
- Disable PIN verification.
- Download the 3G modem program “Mode switcher” and install it on your computer.
- Use it to switch the device to “Modem only” mode.
- After successfully changing the mode disconnect from PC and connect the modem to the tablet via OTG-cable.
How to connect the Internet on the tablet via a Wi-Fi router
The most common and convenient way to connect to the Internet on your tablet is to use a wireless Wi-Fi connection.
Before you do this, make sure there is a Wi-Fi router within signal range. It can be a home hotspot or public Wi-Fi. Be sure that it has access to the network (paid rate and a working router), as well as know the name of the Wi-Fi Wi-Fi and its password.
It’s easy to connect to a wireless network on your Android tablet.
- Open the Settings or release the notification curtain.
- Go to one of the top “Wi-Fi” tabs.
- Move the slider to the on position. The tablet will then turn on Wi-Fi and automatically start scanning for networks in range. After a few seconds, they will appear in the list below the slider.
- In the list of networks you need to tap on the name of the Wi-Fi network.
- A small window will pop up, where you have to enter the password to connect the tablet to the Internet.
- Press “OK”.
After that, the mobile device running Android will connect to the Internet after a few seconds of authentication.
Important: The password can only consist of Latin letters, numbers and some symbols. It is susceptible to upper and lower case, so you must enter it completely as it is.
The principle of how to connect the Internet to the iPad is almost the same as on Android. The items are even located in the same places in both operating systems.
- Open Settings.
- Go to one of the top tabs “Wi-Fi”.
- Move the slider to the enabled position. After that, the tablet will turn on Wi-Fi and automatically begins to scan the network in range. After a few seconds, they will appear in the list below the slider.
- In the list of networks, click on the name of the Wi-Fi network.
- A small window will pop up, in which you need to enter the password.
- Press “Ok”.
An important note about the case and symbols refers to the Wi-Fi network in general, so if the reader missed it in the part about Android, it is recommended to read the information.
Ways to solve connection problems
Setting up the Wi-Fi router
Since most of the tablet devices used by users are based on the Android operating system, we will talk about solving problems with the Internet with this kind of gadgets.
The problem encountered by users of tablets when working with Wi-Fi is the appearance of the inscription “Getting an IP address”. The work of the device stops at this point, and it goes no further. In fact, there are several ways to solve this problem, one of them will probably help owners of tablet devices.
- To change Wi-Fi name for the name in English (there is a perception that tablets do not connect to networks, which have in their names Russian letters)
- Restarting the modem (this trivial way of solving the problem is often the most effective)
- Change the type of data encryption (in the same place where the user has set the password and network name, you must change the type of protection to any other value).
For all the changes to take effect, router must be rebooted.
Preparing the Tablet PC
Generally, when setting up a wireless network these very settings are automatically obtained, but sometimes this is not suitable for the correct access to the Internet. In this case, you must manually enter the IP address, gateway, and DNS. To do this, perform the following steps.
First, you need to enter the device settings. For tablets with different Android OS versions, the entry to the settings may differ, but not so much that the user can get confused about it. Since the device is already connected to the wireless LAN, Wi-Fi will automatically be enabled. To enter the IP address, DNS and gateway there must be no connection to the Wi-Fi, so the access point must be disconnected. Next, you need to enter all the necessary data, and then reconnect to the network. To do this, the user selects his Wi-Fi again, a dialog box opens with the parameters of this network, where you can see the data about its security, signal strength and connection speed, as well as the field where the Wi-Fi password is entered.
So, then it is necessary to perform the following actions:
- The user enters the password for Wi-Fi (it is a key, which was written in the settings of the modem or router during the installation of Wi-Fi)
- It is necessary to put a tick in front of the word “Advanced” in case it is not there, as it is necessary to open additional network settings (the user needs “Proxy server settings” and “IP, DHCP settings”)
- Next, select “DHCP”
- Once you have done this, you will see another tab, here select “Custom”.
It is important to know that if the user has an open network without a password, there will be no such field to enter in the first step.
After selecting “Custom” you can see the following picture.
Click on “Advanced” in the “Users” menu
Here you should enter the following data: in the IP-address field. 192.168.1.7 or 192.168.0.7. The last digit of IP-address can be any, in this example it is 7, it does not matter, it is important that it is not 1 or 2. The remaining numbers should correspond to those available on the custom router you want to connect to, i.e.е. are the digits, which are used by the user to enter the settings of the router.
It is important to know that if the user tries to enter this information on more than one device, each of them must have a different last digit of IP address.
Next, enter the following information: Gateway. 192.168.1.1, the network prefix length is 24. Then DNS1 is 220.127.116.11, DNS2. 18.104.22.168. You can do it in a different way: DNS1. 22.214.171.124, DNS2 IS 126.96.36.199. If it is important for the user to care about the safety of the device, its stable and fast operation, or if he/she sets up the tablet for the child, it is recommended to indicate a secure Yandex DNS. You do not need to change anything else, just click on the “Connect” button.
Network IP addresses
Once the router is installed, you must remove all connections that have been created on the computer. And instead of that, specify the connection parameters in the router settings. Traditionally this is done on the WAN tab.
After that, the router will establish a connection to the Internet. Next, you must remove all connections on the computer, and in the properties of the “Local Area Connection” put automatic IP and DNS.
It is important to know that this is only possible if the computer is connected to the router via cable.
After entering all the settings in the router settings, the Internet connection must be established. At the same time, all devices, not just mobile devices, should connect to it and access the Internet.
Problems not related to the mobile device
All of the following tips that we will give you in this material are somehow related to the settings of routers, so they will be relevant primarily in the case where your tablet or smartphone is having trouble accessing the network directly at home. That is, where you will be able to change the settings of network equipment by yourself.
First you need to find out why your gadget is not working with the selected access point, why it refuses to connect to it, and then change some router settings by going to its control panel via any browser or via a mobile app, if it is provided by the manufacturer.
If your Android tablet or smartphone can’t connect to the internet in your home, the reason may be simple. Although visually the router may appear to be working, its software may be frozen. If this is the case, reboot will help. Unplug your device and wait a few seconds (7-10). Then plug it back in and make sure it is working by checking the display. After a few seconds, check if your mobile device sees the access point and try to connect again. If the gadget doesn’t see the network, the router is most likely still on and you should wait a few seconds to a minute.
Changing your password
If your gadget sees an access point, but you can’t remember the password to your wireless network at home, you can change it at any time in the router’s settings. To do this, go to the appropriate section of the settings and set a new combination of characters. There must be at least eight. Save the changes and reboot your router. Note that after this procedure you will need to enter a new password into every device that works with this access point and receives a wireless signal through it.
Change the encryption type
In some situations (especially with low-end Android devices) it may turn out that the built-in Wi-Fi module does not work with some encryption types. This causes your device to see the access point, but only displays a “Disconnected” error and will not connect to the Internet. To fix this issue, you will need to open your router’s settings and change the type of encryption your mobile device works with. We recommend choosing between WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK. Most devices support these encryption standards.
For some situations, in which the mobile gadget is not connected to the Internet wirelessly, it will also be useful to change the channel on which the signal is distributed. The reason for changing the channel can be a situation when the device sees an access point, but does not connect. This is also due to the problems of compatibility of network equipment and Wi-Fi module. You’ll find up to 12 channels in total in the router settings, but as a rule, no budget Android gadget works with a channel higher than the ninth. Take this information into account when setting up the network.
Disabling MAC and IP filters
In a situation where the network equipment has been tested and is functioning correctly, the mobile gadget sees the access point, through the same device goes into the network a few similar devices, but the smartphone is still not connected to the target network, it is worth looking into the filter MAC and IP-addresses in the settings of the router. Sometimes network equipment is set up so that only the devices in your home may be authorized to access the internet, and their MAC and IP addresses are stored in a special section of the control panel of the modem or other network equipment. Disable all unnecessary filters and restart the router. Do not forget. it turns on from a few seconds to a minute, and only after that, it is worth checking whether the mobile device sees the access point.
