- On the remote control of your TV, press the button that selects the source of the displayed signal.
Modern flat panel televisions, like computers, are digital devices. Through HDMI, it became possible to transfer high quality video files simultaneously with sound transmission.
High-Definition Multimedia Interface or, in short. HDMI, translated: high-resolution multimedia interface. Most video cards provide the ability to connect a computer to the TV via hdmi.
How to connect HDMI to a TV
Off. We turn off both devices so as not to burn the ports. We connect the computer (laptop) to the TV using an HDMI cable. Insert one end of the cord into the HDMI output of the computer and the other end into the HDMI input of the TV. To avoid reducing image and sound quality, do not connect the DVI output (via the adapter) of the computer to the HDMI television input, and vice versa. The connectors should be the same.
Loading. The cable is inserted. Turn on the TV and computer. Windows will boot into the connected computer. It will become clear that the TV is connected to an external source by light flashes of the screen. Do not forget to put the TV in AVI mode, it receives signals from an external source (connected computer), and not from the antenna. In the AVI source mode, select the appropriate HDMI input for the TV.
Customization. To connect a laptop or computer to the TV, adjust the image. On the desktop of the computer, open the context menu with the right mouse button.
In Windows XP, select “Properties”, click the “Options” button. Click the “Advanced” button, select the appropriate value. The desktop of your computer will be displayed on the TV screen.
With Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed on your computer, right-click on an empty space, select “Screen Resolution”. Find the line “Screen” and select the appropriate option. The connected TV is not automatically detected? In the same window, click the “Find” button.
Wait for the TV to finish searching. Set the maximum resolution of the screen scan by selecting “monitor” and “frequent screen refresh” in the tab.
At the top of “Screen Settings” we determine which screen we have primary (1st) and secondary (2nd).
Need to click "Identify". You will see a number on the TV screen "1"on the screen of a computer / laptop "2". To fix the situation, in the “Screen Resolution” window, click on the screen "2". Tick "Set as primary monitor" and press the button "OK".
If necessary, in the properties of the video card, configure the resolution of the desktop size, color correction.
Reboot. Reboot the computer. Changes to the settings will occur automatically.
Fill in the gaps. Expand the horizons!
Probably everyone ever wanted to watch a downloaded movie, play some games on the big screen. It’s easier on the couch to watch a movie comfortably, rather than sit on a chair near the monitor.
Today, the average diagonal of monitors is about 20-24 inches, but this is not always enough for ease of perception.
And again the sound. Not always a computer is capable of reproducing sound as colorful and voluminous as some modern TVs equipped with excellent speaker systems. And already I want to watch a movie in good quality both image and sound.
Therefore, most people think about connecting their computer to the TV, thereby making it a huge monitor with sound. But many have the question: how can I connect my PC to the TV?
This article describes two methods for connecting a computer to a TV through a cable. And in both cases, special cords will be needed:
- VGA cable, either
- HDMI cable
The option to connect via Wi-Fi is not considered here.
If you connect the computer to the TV via a VGA cable
Fig. 1. What does a VGA connector look like?
This method is not suitable for new TV models, since they most likely will not have a VGA connector. Therefore, immediately check for the presence of such an input on your TV. This connector (Fig. 2):
- Has an almost rectangular shape,
- Consists of 15 contacts, which are arranged in 3 rows of 5 pieces.
To connect the computer to the TV, you only need a VGA cable. You do not need to buy it, since most likely your monitor is already connected to the computer with just such a cable.

Just unplug the cord from the monitor and connect the personal computer to your TV through the VGA connector.
If you use a laptop where it is impossible to disconnect the monitor, then you will need
- VGA-VGA cable for connecting on one side to the VGA output connector of a laptop,
- And on the other hand to the VGA input connector of the TV.

After turning on the computer, the TV should display your desktop as it was on the computer. And you can run any movies, games and other applications.
It should be noted right away that when you connect the TV using VGA, the computer will still play sound. The VGA connector is designed to transmit only image, but not sound. Therefore, we will not be able to use the capabilities of the TV to play sound with this connection.

Connection is also not complicated. Just connect the HDMI cable to your TV and then to your computer. Next, you need to choose on the TV which stream to use for display. To do this, press SOURCE on the remote control and select HDMI. After that, your desktop will appear on the TV.
Video: How to Connect Computer to TV via Cable
It is worth noting that this method of connection gives a clearer image, in contrast to VGA. Since through the VGA-cable the signal is analog, and through HDMI. Digital.
Sound is also transmitted via HDMI, so this connection makes it possible to listen to the soundtrack of movies, games and other applications using the acoustic capabilities of the TV, which gives additional convenience and advantages of such a connection.
Thus, connecting your computer to the TV will not be difficult and will not require any solid cash costs, since you already have these cables, and if they are not, they are inexpensive. And as a result, you have the opportunity to watch any movies on the screen with a large diagonal and with high-quality sound.
Each of us at least once thought about how to connect a computer and a TV, to display the image from the monitor on a large screen using HDMI technology or a router. This is not so difficult to do, there are many ways to connect: using cables of several formats. HDMI, DVI or VGA, through a Wi-Fi connection to a computer or directly to the Internet.
Wired connection provides the best signal transmission between devices
We will focus on each of them and find out how to set up a picture when displaying it on a TV.
There are several connectors through which PC and TV are connected. DVI and HDMI cables transmit a high-quality signal, while using the VGA format allows you to get only an analog image.
The subsequent choice of cable depends on which sockets are on the equipment. It is important that they coincide or that an adapter can be installed on one of its ends.
If the computer does not have a built-in HDMI card or you are going to connect it to the TV via a cable of a different format, you need to purchase a wire to transmit sound, otherwise you will only get an image. It is connected through an audio connector. A round green hole with a diameter of 3.5 mm and connects the input on the PC sound panel and the connector on the TV or external speakers. Without such a cable, you will have to listen to sound through computer speakers.
Connection via VGA
This connection format will allow you to see an analog image without sound, which will not be too high resolution, respectively, of imperfect quality. However, if there are no other types of connectors, use this particular method to connect the equipment.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Turn off the computer, connect the equipment to each other using cables for audio and image;
- Turn on the TV and select the connection point in the settings (the section may be called Source or Input), stop at the VGA item;
- Turn on the computer. The desktop image should appear on the TV screen. On the computer, another monitor should appear in the desktop settings.
Video input via DVI cable
This connection method allows you to enjoy digital rather than analog images, but still without sound.
Please note that there are various types of cables of this format, do not be mistaken when choosing and subsequent purchase. In general, the connection between the PC and the TV is set in the same way as in the previous method, only in the video reception settings, select the DVI format.
This method of supplying video and audio signals to TV is the most relevant and profitable today, because you will receive a high-quality digital signal with sound. Provided that the computer has a built-in HDMI-card. Modern video cards and laptops are usually equipped with such a connector.
Using this connection, you can display a picture on the screen with a large diagonal without loss of quality, which will especially appeal to fans of cinema and various games.
When buying an HDMI cable, consider the location of the equipment in the room. If the screen is located on the wall, you can’t just insert a straight plug, as the cable is quite thick and rigid. There are various types of cables where the plug is rotated 90 degrees or made in the form of a corner. It fits well between the back of the TV and the wall.
Connection is done like this:
- Disconnect the equipment from the network, connect it with a cable through the HDMI connectors;
- Turn on the TV, in the connection parameters (Source or Input), select the desired type of connection.
It happens that a HDMI port on a TV is not enough, and to solve the problem there are switches. “hubs” that allow you to connect multiple devices to it at the same time.
After connecting the equipment using one of the above methods, you need to adjust the image. Do the following:
- In the desktop context menu (it is turned on with the right mouse button), open the “Screen Resolution” item;
- In the Screen section, the line “Multiple Monitors” is selected if you connected the TV and did not disconnect the computer screen.
When setting the resolution, stop at the highest indicator for the greatest clarity of the picture, but keep in mind that the higher this indicator, the smaller the icons.
Work with multiple displays
You can use multiple monitors at the same time as follows:
- Duplication mode is a complete coincidence of the image on both the PC and the TV. Your actions are visible on all monitors connected to the system unit;
- “Extension”. A mode for combining two screens so that each of them is independent.
To change the resolution on an individual device, select it through the “Screen” item and make the necessary settings.
Using a network cable
In addition to the above methods, a computer and a TV can be connected to watch videos or photos on a large screen using a Wi-Fi router. This requires a LAN port on the equipment and a network cable, after which a special media server is installed.
It all happens like this:
- Connect the TV to the router using a network cable to the LAN jack and install a media server on it using the following steps;
- Download the program for transmitting data from a computer. Most users choose the Home Media Server utility;
- After installing the program, select your TV in the settings menu, then mark the sections on the PC that you would like to view on it;
- Run the program;
- Turn on the TV, select the Source section in the parameters, after which a program will appear in the list through which you can view files from your computer.
In a similar way, two devices are connected directly via LAN ports. On the one hand, the cable is inserted into the TV jack, the other end is connected to the same port on the back of the system unit, creating a network connection.
Important! To combine technology using the above two methods, you need to set DHCP network settings on the TV. If they are not turned on automatically, you should manually register the following data:
- In the operating system: go to the Control Panel, open your network and view its properties. Select Internet Protocol 4 and prescribe the IP address 192.168.0.1, subnet mask. 255.255.255.0. The combination of the DNS server matches the IP value;
- Enter this data in the network settings of the TV.
In modern models of smart TVs, there is a built-in Wi-Fi module that is useful to you to connect the device to your PC and display the image on the screen.
To do this, connect to the wireless network through the hardware settings, connect to this network on a personal computer. Now, through the Control Panel, go to the screen menu, enable the search for monitors in the resolution settings window. When the computer detects all monitors, you can broadcast your desktop on the big screen. To do this, both the computer and the TV must support Wireless Display (WiDi) technology and it must be turned on.
If the TV supports Miracast technology or a special set-top box is used, then it is enough to install some application on the computer for broadcasting to the TV via Wi-Fi, for example, the EZCast utility. After that, it is enough to connect the TV and computer to the same Wi-Fi network so that they can work together, as when connecting with a cable.
All the described connection methods will allow you to transfer the image from the computer screen to the TV. In principle, combining technology with an HDMI cable is one of the most attractive and logical options, as this signal transmission format allows you to get a high quality picture with clear sound. But the choice of the best method depends on the parameters of the technique and which of the listed options will be most convenient for you.
