How to Connect a Router Without a Computer

Now in many homes or at the workplace in the office there is a stationary computer. In this case, setting up a Wi-Fi router is quite simple and even an inexperienced user can handle this task. It is enough to install the router, connect it to power and the global network, configure the settings through the browser. And you can enjoy high-speed Internet.

But how to set up a router without a computer? You remember that the modern market for stationary PCs is increasingly competing with other devices: smartphones, tablets, laptops and even televisions. And an increasingly common situation is that we ended up without a computer and network cable at hand, but we want to configure the router ourselves for wireless access to the network.

So, today we pose the question. Is it possible to configure a router from a personal smartphone or tablet? Of course! You can configure from any of your devices that have the ability to connect to a Wi-Fi network. It is clear that you have it, since you decided to purchase and install this unit. A device that works both on the Android operating system and on iOS is suitable.

The whole process is identical to the setting from a personal computer. There are some nuances with direct connection. The main thing is that you need an Internet access point and good reliable equipment.

See the following video for instructions on setting up a router from a smartphone:

Router Connection

Let’s get started on how to connect the router itself. First you need to connect it to the power supply, which is plugged into a 220V outlet. Then plug the Internet Ethernet cable from your ISP into the WAN port.

After connecting the external cable and power supply, we check the light indication on the router. If the indicators work, then we did everything right. If after turning on the device in the network the icons do not light up and everything is assembled correctly, we are looking for the power button on the device’s case, maybe it turns on in this way. If all the actions did not lead to a positive result, then most likely the equipment is faulty and will have to be sent to the service for repair.

Network identification

Note that our network in the default version will be called standard (usually the name of the router itself).

There will be no password, the network will be accessible to everyone, which we will use to enter. If there are several such networks, then in order to determine which one to connect to, we use a simple method. We simply turn off the power on our device, and then turn it back on with the button or into a wall outlet. We see which network disappears for a while from our list of available connections. Now we will be confident in choosing our network.

Customization

Finally, we take a mobile device and read how to configure a router through a telephone. Please note that we work without a network cable, which is called a patch cord (it is needed to connect the router to a PC or laptop). We go into the search for a wireless network and click on the network of our access point in the list. Connection to it so far should be without a password. In rare cases, a code is required to enter the selected network. It is easy to find, since it is written on the back of the router.

Next, on your device, turn on any browser and in the address bar we write IP. By default, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1 and proceed. The address of the device can usually be found on a glued label that hangs on the back cover.

Next, we get into the settings menu, or a window pops up asking you to enter your username and password. Usually, the username and password are standard. Admin and admin. We enter them and get into the web interface of the router. And then comes the usual setup.

It’s better to immediately configure the router so that it works correctly with any Internet provider, therefore, there were no issues when connecting to the network and gaining Wi-Fi access for your devices. To accomplish this task, we need to know several criteria that the Internet provider could tell us when signing documents to connect to the Internet service.

Firstly, you need to know by which technology the connection is made. We list the options:

  • Static (static) IP,
  • Dynamic IP
  • PPPoE,
  • PPTP
  • L2TP.

You also need to learn about binding using a unique identifier and ask to bind the port to the MAC address of your router. Data can be found on the sticker at the bottom of the router.

Setting up Wi-Fi connection

Now we’ll tell you how to configure Wi-Fi access on a router through a phone or tablet:

  1. Consider a bookmark called Wireless.
  2. In the field “Wireless_Network_Name” you need to name our new network. You can use the Latin alphabet and numbers for this.
  3. In the field “Region choose the country of residence.
  4. Next, click “Save.” Sometimes a notification window appears. We skip it by pressing the “OK” button.

Setting a password on a wireless network

Setting up Wi-Fi on the router requires a password. This must be done in any case, through the phone you are setting up a connection or from a PC.

  1. In the “Wireless” tab, select “Wireless_Security”.
  2. We tick off the button “WPA / WPA-2”. “Personal (Recommended)”.
  3. In the field “PSK_Password you must enter a password. You invented it yourself and you need to remember it, because you will have to enter it every time you reconnect. It is important to observe the password requirements: more than 8 characters, use large and small letters of the Latin alphabet and numbers. If the password is complex, it is better to write it down. If it is lost, you will have to reset all equipment settings and start all over again.

Password Replacement

It is better to change the default login and password for accessing the router interface (usually there is admin. Admin everywhere), because security is first of all, otherwise any stranger will be able to log in and change your settings to his advantage.

  1. Bookmark System_Tools. Password.
  2. First, enter the old username and password, which were the default, and then set new ones that are known only to you.
  1. We save the changes, and the system throws us a window in which it asks for your new data. We enter them and get into the settings menu, if everything was done correctly.
  2. It remains to restart the router. This action can be performed in the “System_Tools” section. Select the “Reboot” button and wait for the equipment to exit the reboot.

Setting up a router from TP-Link

Look at the Wi-Fi network setting on the router TP-Link through a special application on a smartphone:

So, we gave general information, now we will consider the issue on a specific model. We will tell you how to configure the TP-Link router through the phone.

  1. Open any browser on your phone or tablet and write the IP address of the device 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. We will find ourselves on the authorization page, where they enter the username / password (known to us admin / admin).
  1. Select the “Quick Setup” section (recommended for beginners). Click “Next.”
  1. In the next window, you can fill in all the lines, or check the box “I did not find the appropriate settings.”
  1. Now we need to choose the type of connection (we need to find out from the provider). We have the same settings for a static IP address.
  1. We fill in the following fields using information from the provider:
  1. If the provider did not specify the binding by MAC address, in the next window select “No, I am not connected to the host computer”:

To establish a Wi-Fi connection from the phone, we also go to the “Quick Settings” section and select “Wireless Mode”. In the wireless mode section, turn on “Wireless Broadcasting”, set the SSID network (name), select the native region and set the mode (recommended mixed b / g / n).

In the “Wireless Protection” section, we need to come up with a password for our Wi-Fi network (WPA2-PSK type is recommended as the most reliable).

Finally, access to the global network is open, and we can get to any site. Setting up a router from a phone or tablet is a snap. This is due to the fact that operating systems are very similar, they support the same applications as a personal computer. The browser on any device performs the same functions, so it can be easily applied on a smartphone to configure the access point.

Check in practice, is it really so easy to set up a router without a computer, connect an access point and connect your devices to a new network? I am sure you will succeed!

Carrying out settings in the situation when a personal computer is used for this does not present any special difficulties. However, sometimes it may happen that you need to connect the router, but there is no computer or laptop nearby. In this case, it is also possible to make a connection, but this must be done in accordance with certain rules. The article will tell you how to connect a router without a computer and laptop.

Is it possible to connect and configure a router without connecting to a computer

You can configure the router to connect to the Internet not only using a computer or laptop, but also using a mobile phone or tablet. The only condition is that a wire must be connected to the apartment through which you can access the worldwide network.

Configuring a router without a computer. From a tablet or smartphone

When setting up access to the Internet from a mobile device, it must be taken into account that various operating systems can be used on it. The most common options are using Android or iOS. The router that is used can refer to different models. The most popular is TP-Link. Widely used by Zyxel, D-LINK, Upvel and others.

Important! Each router model has its own management interface. They differ in appearance, however, the general principles for setting the initial parameters are the same in all cases.

Is it possible to connect Wi-Fi without a computer. Yes, it is possible, and this is not a more complicated procedure than on a PC.

Step-by-step instruction

In order to set up a wireless network, you must take the following steps.

First step. Turn on the router

Before starting the procedure for setting the initial parameters, it is recommended to perform a reset. As a result, the current parameters will be deleted and the factory data will be set. This is especially important if the router was not purchased immediately before, but already worked elsewhere for a certain time. At the same time, of course, certain parameters were set in it, which may not be suitable in the new situation.

If it is necessary to fasten the antenna “horns” to the device, then now it needs to be done. In order for the router to be operational, it must be connected to the power supply network. The router has one WAN slot and four LAN slots in order to connect devices. The first of them is designed to connect a network cable from the provider. After connecting the power and cable from the provider, the indicators on the router should light up. If this does not happen, then you may need to press the power button of the device.

Important! For further work, it is necessary to prepare a mobile device on which work will be performed.

Second step. Configuring a router using a tablet

When thinking about how to configure a router without the Internet, you need to consider that the setup process does not require such access. However, after all the necessary parameters are installed, communication without access to the provider will not work.

At this point, you need to connect to the router via WiFi on the tablet. With the factory settings set, you can connect to a wireless communication channel without any difficulties.

To do this, call up the menu in the interface and select the wireless icon, which in appearance resembles an inverted pyramid. In the list of available networks, you need to select the network of your router and connect a mobile device to it.

Important! We recommend that you verify that the connection has been made to the correct network. To do this, it is enough to temporarily remove the plug from the outlet. In this case, the network should disappear and reappear.

Router settings via a browser on a mobile phone

When using a mobile phone, setting up a router via WiFi without a cable is done in the same way. To do this, go to the settings and go to the section that relates to WiFi. When the list of available networks appears on the screen, you will need to select your own.

How to Connect a Router Without a Computer

In order to configure the router, you need to run any browser on your mobile device. For example, Android Chrome.

In the address bar you need to write the IP address of the router. It can be directly indicated on the device. For one of the models, for example, it is equal to 192.168.1.1. If you enter the link, you can see the settings access screen. Now you need to enter your login and password.

They are usually also indicated on the case. For the TP-Link router, enter “admin” as the login and password. Subsequently, if there is such a desire, it is possible to set your own parameters for entry.

Important! If the login and password were entered correctly, then after that the settings window will open.

Third step. Setting Internet Settings

In order to ensure uninterrupted communication with your ISP, you need to configure your router correctly.

Next, we will explain how to connect a Wi-Fi router without a computer.

In this case, it is necessary to indicate the data of the Internet connection in accordance with the instructions received from it. To connect, you will need to specify the following:

  • Type of Internet address: static or dynamic;
  • Connection option: PPPoE, PPTP, or L2TP;
  • You must enter the connection parameters.

Important! It is necessary to find out, when delivering communication services with the Internet, it is bound to the MAC address of the device. If this is the case, then you need to ensure that the provider uses the address of the router for this purpose.

When setting up a TP Link router without a computer, these parameters are entered in the Network-WAN section. In the line “WAN_Connection_Type” you need to select the applicable connection technology. Next, enter the Internet connection parameters: login, password, IP-code (if a statistical address is used). When dynamic is applied, there is no need to indicate anything on the last line.

Important! After entering, you must again carefully check the entered data. If everything is done correctly, then you need to click on the “Save” button.

Now the connection with the Internet provider has been established, and the router was without connecting to a computer.

Fourth step. Setting up Wi-Fi connection

After gaining access to the worldwide network, you need to establish WiFi between the router and the mobile device. To do this, go to the “Wireless” tab. Now you are specifying the parameters of your own Wi-Fi network.

You must come up with its name and enter in the field “Wireless_Network_Name”. It will be reflected in the lists of available networks on mobile devices that will be in the access zone.

In the column “Region” you will need to indicate the country of residence.

After the data has been entered and verified, they must be saved.

Fifth step. Setting a password on a wireless network

In order to limit access to the created wireless network, you must set a password on it. To do this, go to the Wireless section, and then to the Wireless_Security subsection.

You need to select “WPA / WPA-2”. “Personal (Recommended)” from the list provided.

In “PSK_Password” indicate the password for access. It must be invented so that it is not too simple. It must consist of Latin letters and numbers and cannot be shorter than 8 characters. It is recommended to write it down so as not to forget.

Important! After checking the correctness of the input, it is necessary to save the entered information.

Sixth step. Change Password

If necessary, change the password for entering the settings, go to the “System_Tools”. “Password” section, enter the old username and password, and then enter the new ones in the corresponding column. And in this case, the password must be entered twice.

To complete the configuration, you need to reboot. To do this, go to “System_Tools”. “Reboot” and press the button to reboot.

Now the new username and password have entered into force.
