How to Connect a Laptop to TV

How to Connect a Laptop to a TV?

A confident Windows user who knows how to run a hotspot or flip the screen on a laptop, probably noticed one significant flaw with his portable computer: too small to view FullHD display. Of course, you can’t “expand” it, but you can connect it to a TV and watch movies, clips, and photos on the big screen. Let’s try to understand how to do it.

Connecting a TV and a laptop or a netbook is as easy as entering BIOS and getting to grips with the fine settings of the operating system: the owner of the equipment needs a minimum of knowledge, a cable or a working Wi-Fi spot, patience and accuracy. You don’t need anything else, and the process itself, including setup, will take from ten minutes to half an hour.

Important: Connecting the laptop to the TV using the methods described below is an absolutely safe process for both devices, and does not interfere with the autonomous operation of equipment. The user can at any time return everything to the way it was. simply remove the wires.

Despite the common perception, you can connect to an old TV set from your laptop. it might take a little longer and the picture quality will not be as impressive, but there is no way out. so you can proceed with your manipulations.

Connecting TV to laptop (Windows 10) via Wi-Fi. DLNA Setup

We will not consider setting up Wi-Fi Direct (when you can connect a TV to a laptop without a router, without wires) and Miracast (not all devices support this technology). These are topics for separate articles.

If you want to wirelessly connect your TV to your computer, you can do this as follows:

The main thing is that the laptop and TV must be connected to the same router. By the way, it doesn’t have to be over Wi-Fi. One of the devices (or even both). Can be connected to a router by cable.

Once you have everything connected, you can move on to setting up the DLNA server on your computer. By running the server on your computer, you can watch movies on your TV. Note that the desktop will not appear on your TV using this method. You will only be able to view certain files. We have three articles on setting up a DLNA server:

Even though they are written using Windows 7 as an example, setting up a DLNA server on Windows 10 will go exactly the same. I checked, running on a laptop with Windows 10 DLNA server installed shows up on the TV without any problems.

The instructions on the links above are for LG televisions, and Philips. But, the server, running the above methods, will work without problems on other TVs: Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, etc. д. Set up DLNA with “Home Media Server (UPnP, DLNA, HTTP)” (like I did for Philips TV). It can be called universal.

I think we’re done with the wireless connection. Let’s move on to the wires.

How to connect your laptop to a TV with VGA

If your laptop does not have an HDMI connector, you can synchronize devices using the VGA connector.

The connection algorithm is as follows:

  • Connect the devices with the appropriate cable;
  • On the TV, you select a special incoming picture mode by pressing the INPUT button on the remote control;
  • On the laptop activate the display on two screens, simultaneously pressing the key combination Fn button, corresponding to your laptop model.

A significant disadvantage of this type of image transmission is the lack of sound on your TV. That is, with VGA you can transmit only a video signal, the audio will go through the laptop speakers or the speakers connected to it. As for the video quality, the transferred image will most often be 1600 x 1200 dpi.

Connecting a laptop to the TV through HDMI cable

If you are interested, then I will show you by the example of a laptop Asus K56CM, and a slightly outdated LG 32LN575U TV, which, incidentally, we connected to Wi-Fi in this article.

So, one end of the cable connects to the HDMI connector on the TV. They are signed. There can be more than one. It doesn’t matter which one you plug it into.

Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI connector on your laptop.

Or, to the video card on the system unit. If you have a desktop computer.

You probably won’t see an image on your TV right away. It is necessary to select the signal source in the settings. On LG televisions, you have to press the INPUT button on the remote control.

And use the joystick on the remote control to select the desired HDMI, to which we connected the cable. Mine is HDMI2. It will be the active. If your TV is not LG, then there should also be a button which you can use to switch sources. If it does not work, write in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев, we’ll figure it out.

That is all, you should see the image from the laptop on your TV.

In the Комментарии и мнения владельцев, Dmitry advised that you have to change the device name for the selected HDMI input on your TV. As it changes some parameters which can affect the image quality. So I recommend that you do this.

In the HDMI input selection menu (as in the photo above) press the red button on the remote control. In the menu on the TV is the item “Change the name of the device. In the menu that appears, select the HDMI input, in which we connected the laptop and below select “Laptop.

We are finished with the connection. Already you can use and enjoy the picture on the big screen. And I will also show you how you can adjust the image output on the laptop, consider the possible problem with the output of the picture and sound. When the sound after connection will not come from the TV, but from the laptop speakers.

How to connect a laptop to a TV through an HDMI cable

The easiest way to connect your laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable. There is a corresponding jack in every modern portable computer. Yes, and LCD TVs are not deprived of it. Only monitors may be an exception to the rule. their back panel HDMI input may be missing, so you have to look for other options.

So how to connect the laptop to the TV through HDMI? You will need, as it is easy to guess, an HDMI cable. In the case of a laptop, the simplest accessory that supports one of the first versions of HDMI technology will do. It is unlikely that you will display 4K images on your TV, and even in 3D.

The first step is to connect the cable. On your TV, insert the plug into a free HDMI IN jack. Plug the other end of the cord into the same slot on your laptop. There is nothing complicated about it, it is impossible to mix up anything. the portable computer is equipped with only one socket, where you can insert the HDMI plug.

connect, laptop

If a desktop computer is connected to the TV, then the appropriate connector must be sought at the back of the video card. It is possible that instead of full-size HDMI there is a mini-HDMI jack. There’s nothing wrong with this, you’ll just have to get hold of a suitable cable or adapter. If your computer has only a VGA connector, but your TV does not, you will also need an adapter.

It is very easy to connect two devices by cable. But this is not the end of the connection. Next, you need to get the TV to display a picture received via cable. To do this you will need to press the “Input” button on the remote control. The screen will display a list of available signal sources. Select the HDMI port to which the cord is now connected. In the case of Smart TV the system can prompt you to switch to the active source.

Windows Settings

Generally speaking, the connection is already made. You should see the same picture on your TV that is also displayed on your notebook screen. But for a more comfortable viewing it is possible to work on the settings.

To do this, take your laptop and press the “Win” “X” combination on its keyboard. Or open the “Control Panel” and select the “Windows Mobility Center” item. Pay attention to the “External Display” segment in the relevant section. Here click on the “Disable Screen” button.

connect, laptop

At this point, another menu will pop up. There you will find several options for the TV screen and the laptop screen:

  • “Computer Only”. If you click on this item, the HDMI signal transmission will stop;
  • “Duplicate”. the standard option, when the computer and TV displays the same picture;
  • “Expand”. when you activate this mode, the TV turns into a second desktop, continuing the first;
  • “Projector Only”. Clicking this item will turn off the laptop screen.

You need to select the fourth option. Do not be afraid. When you disconnect the HDMI cable from one of the sockets, the image will return to the laptop screen.

Also, when the TV is connected with HDMI, it is a good idea to enter another settings menu. You can do this by right-clicking on the free area of the desktop. then select “Screen Resolution” in the context menu. Here you need to select in which resolution the image will be transmitted to the TV. By the way, you can also expand or duplicate the desktop here.

That’s it! Now you can set your notebook aside while you watch videos or do whatever else you want.

Connecting your laptop wirelessly to the TV

Update 2016: Wrote a more detailed and up-to-date instruction (than what follows) on how to connect a laptop to a TV over Wi-Fi, t.е. WIRELESS: How to connect your laptop to your TV over Wi-Fi.

Today’s laptops with Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors can connect to TVs and other displays wirelessly using Intel Wireless Display technology. As a rule, if you haven’t reinstalled Windows on your laptop, you already have all the drivers you need. Not only can you wirelessly transmit high-definition images, but also the sound.

To connect, you will need either a special TV set top box or the TV receiver itself supports this technology. The latter include:

Unfortunately I have no way to test and demonstrate how it all works, but detailed instructions on how to use Intel WiDi to connect your laptop and notebook wirelessly to the TV are on the official Intel website:

Hopefully, the ways described above will be enough for you to connect your devices in the right way.

Connection features for Apple laptops

Depending on the model and manufacturer, laptops have different interfaces. In the case of the Apple brand, appliances can have a non-standard set of ports. It is necessary to examine the laptop, and choose the type of connection of the laptop with the TV.

  • Thunderbolt 3. If you have such a connector, you will need an adapter with the USB-C-HDMI characteristic. It is sold in regular stores, but it is best to buy the adapter on the official website of the manufacturer, so that there will be no interruptions in data transfer;
  • Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt. Here it is necessary to buy an adapter with USB-HDMI parameters;
  • HDMI. If there is such a port on the laptop, the user will not need to purchase an adapter. Direct connection with one cable is enough.
  • Purchase the necessary adapter and HDMI or RCA wire (depending on the ports on the TV). Turn off the TV and synchronize the devices;
  • Configure the gadgets and save the new settings. Your TV will now display a Connection Type window, where you will click on HDMI (PC). Go into the laptop’s Control Panel and select the optimal resolution and broadcasting type.

In the step-by-step video instructions, the user can see a detailed description of the connection steps:

Playing movies from your computer on your TV via Wi-Fi (DLNA)

This, the most common way to connect your TV wirelessly, requires that the TV itself be connected to the same router in addition to having a Wi-Fi module (i.e.е. to the same network) as the computer or laptop on which the video and other materials are stored (for TVs with Wi-Fi Direct support you can do without a router, just connect to the network created by TV). Hopefully, this is already the case, and no separate instructions are needed. the connection is made from the appropriate menu of your TV in the same way as the connection to the Wi-Fi of any other device. See. A separate manual: How to configure DLNA in Windows 10.

The next step is to set up a DLNA server on your computer, or, more accurately, to share folders on it. Usually it is enough to have “Home” (Private) set in the current network settings. By default, the public folders are “Videos”, “Music”, “Pictures” and “Documents” (you can share a folder by right-clicking on it, selecting “Properties” and the “Access” tab).

One of the fastest ways to enable sharing is to open Windows Explorer, select “Networking” and if you see the message “Network discovery and file sharing disabled”, click on it and follow the instructions.

If this message doesn’t follow, but instead displays computers on the network and media servers, then you’re probably already set up (it’s quite likely). If that didn’t work, here are detailed instructions on how to set up a DLNA server in Windows 7 and 8.

Once DLNA is enabled, open your TV’s menu to view the contents of connected devices. On the Sony Bravia, you can go to the Home button and then select the section. Movies, Music or Pictures and watch the relevant content from your computer (Sony also has a program called Homestream, which simplifies everything I wrote). On LG TVs. SmartShare item, there you will also need to see the contents of shared folders, even if you do not have SmartShare installed on your computer. TVs of other brands require about the same steps (and there are their own programs, too).

Additionally, when DLNA connection is active, by right-clicking on the video file in Explorer (this is done on the computer), you can select the menu item “Play to TV_name. Selecting this item will start wireless video streaming from your computer to your TV.

Note: even if your TV supports MKV movies, these files do not work with “Play To” in Windows 7 and 8, and are not visible in the TV menu. Working in most cases the solution is simply to rename these files to AVI on the computer.

The benefits of wireless connectivity

Some of the benefits that can be obtained with a wireless connection include:

  • high connection speed;
  • The absence of any wires;
  • quite a lot of functionality when using modern technology.

Minuses are the possibility of slowness and the inability to broadcast images in 4K resolution (with a wired connection, there is such a possibility).

To get the most out of the wireless connection between two gadgets, you need to use the most advanced and modern ways of connection. TV from a popular manufacturer with a Smart TV can connect to a laptop and PC using proprietary technology.
