IPTV over Wi-Fi is a problem? Absolutely no problem!

I think many have faced the following problem. Provider provides IPTV service, not WebTV over HTTP, but classic IPTV over UDP multicast. But I, like probably many readers, have a desire to get rid of unnecessary wires. over, there are many smartphones, tablets and other gadgets that do not have the physical ability to connect wires. And simply, Wi-Fi is more convenient, as they say “further, more, better”. I decided to use the following scheme:

I started to study the question. It turned out that IPTV multicast, not all Wi-Fi access points are able to transmit correctly. The desire to lie on the sofa and watch IPTV on the tablet wasn’t reduced. We found a fairly simple solution. the UDP-to-HTTP service. Pretty simple program on the fly converts UDP multicast packets to HTTP unicast. And this HTTP unicast is transmitted via Wi-Fi perfectly. Once again I was convinced that I have not wasted my hard earned money on D-Link DNS-325 network storage. It has the ability to install additional software, the so-called Add-Ons. Add-On installation does not interfere with the basic functionality. That is, after installing Add-On’s, it continues to work, without deteriorating the functionality and performance, such services as Samba, FTP, NFS, DLNA, etc.д. So, what do we do. Go to http://dlink/dns and download the “UDP-to-HTTP” Add-On.

Let’s install Add-On on the DNS-325 via “Management / Application Management / Add-Ons.

The message “This add-on was not created by D-Link Corporation” is not scary, click “Yes”.

Start the Add-On by clicking the Start button and go to Applications.

Click on “UDP-to-HTTP” icon. We see the instruction to convert URL channels UDP multicast in HTTP unicast. According to it edit your M3U or XML playlist.

What to do? The following tasks are outlined: 1) To release all client devices (laptops, computers, tablets, etc.) into the network.2) To put an IPTV set-top box rented from Beeline to the kitchen TV set and make it work, while maintaining all the features. As I am a follower and a long-time user of Mikrotik products, it was decided to solve the problem with the equipment of this vendor. Now it is time to configure the wireless part of the venture. First of all we will prepare access point for IPTV set-top box. There is nothing unusual here, it is a typical setup, except for the most important point. This is Multicast Helper. It should be set to full.

How to open a port for Asus IPTV set-top box

First, a little explanation for those who are not at all aware of how digital interactive television works. The provider broadcasts a multicast stream, which is delivered to the user and on his side is received by the program, a card module or STB-device. Most service providers use the STB set-top box as the terminal equipment. On the user side, you need to properly configure the LAN-port on your WI-FI router Asus. We start with the fact that you need to get into the settings of the router. Setting up IPTV from Rostelecom on MikroTik routers

At one time, when I bought a router MikroTik, in addition to the basic configuration of the Internet I had to solve the problem of IPTV, until then I had a D-link router, installed by Rostelecom. The very basic configuration of the Internet on microtic took me about 10 minutes, but with IPTV had to tinker. All those manuals I’ve read at that time didn’t take into account many points, which I’ve reached after I’ve dug out the settings of my long-suffering D-link- and without which TV will not work properly in this scheme. In this article I want to indicate a universal instruction in this situation.

First of all update the firmware to the latest. Connect to the router via Winbox and go to [System]-[Packages]. [Check for updates]. If a newer version of Routeros is out than the one installed on the router, click Download Install, after that the new version will be downloaded and the router will reboot.

After these steps, go here and select packages to download for your device, in my case is the haP series and I select the extra packages for the current version (6.43.4 at the time of writing).

An archive will be downloaded from which you should unpack the multicast file, open files in winbox and drag and drop the unpacked file directly there. After that you should reboot the router (go to [System]-[Reboot]).

After rebooting in the Routing section should appear IGMP Proxy item, if not check the previous steps. have we installed the right package (for the right device, firmware version). If you succeed, go to the next step.

In IGMP Proxy on the first tab we click the [] sign to create the so-called Upstream. In the item interface choose the port where the cord from the provider is plugged. Even if you are using PPPoE connection choose the physical port, this is a very important point. Check the box Upstream and put 0 in Alternative Subnets.0.0.0/0 and click Ok. Create a second rule for Downstream. In interface select All, do not check upstream, no more actions are required here, just click ok and that’s it.

By the way, this was the problem when I first configured the microtic, without the IP address did not work, but I found out that it is necessary to enter it in the settings of D-link. Go to [IP]-[Addresses] and [] and add these settings. If you use a direct connection without raising any tunnels (called. IPoE), then the previous steps will be enough and this point is skipped.

Note a very important point, after all these steps, you must reboot the set-top box if it was enabled and only then check the result settings. In case of any problems, first of all I advise you to check the rules in the firewall.
