What to do if the mouse doesn’t work
First, find out if the problem is with your computer or your device. To do this, connect your mouse to any other desktop or laptop. If it works, the problem is in your PC, if not. the mouse is faulty.
You can do the opposite. Find and connect a known good mouse to your computer. If it doesn’t work, this will confirm a problem with your PC.
UEFI BIOS setup screen.
Another way to make sure your mouse is working properly is to test its functions outside the operating system. This can be done in the UEFI setup on modern computers, but also when booting from an installation or Live CD on older computers. If there is nothing wrong with the mouse, the problem is definitely with the OS or drivers.
A faulty mouse is easier to replace with a new one than to repair. The only exception is for expensive gaming models, which can be repaired. Computer malfunctions are easy to fix with one of the methods below.
Check the cord
The cable is a weak point of wired mice, so it’s a good place to start looking for problems. Look closely for cracks or other damage to the insulation: Maybe the cable was trapped or chewed by animals.
If your mouse starts to run when you move the cord or in a certain position, the wires are broken. There are two options here: not to bother and just replace the manipulator for a new one, or bother to strip and solder the cable strands, insulating the connection.
Replace the battery
For wireless devices, the reason for not communicating with the receiver can be a dead battery. If this is indeed the case, the problem is easily solved by replacing it with a new and good quality. If you are using a battery it will be enough to charge it.
Make sure that the port is working properly
The next step is logical to check the functionality of the port to which the mouse is plugged. If it is a USB connector, try to insert a USB flash drive or other device and make sure that they work. You can also simply plug your mouse into another port, preferably the one on the back or the one on the top.
There is only one PS/2 port on the motherboard for a mouse, so you can try connecting to USB with a special adapter. It also makes sense to check the pins of the plug itself. they are pin-shaped and sometimes bent. They can easily be straightened out with tweezers or a thin screwdriver.
By the way, check if the mouse is accidentally plugged into the keyboard connector. The ports are not interchangeable, so nothing will work.
Perform a laptop battery reset
Mouse failure on handheld devices often occurs due to software glitches, which can be corrected by doing an initialization procedure. Proceed as follows:
- Completely disconnect your notebook and unplug the power adapter if it is removable.
- Press and hold the power button for 30-60 seconds.
- If you removed the battery, replace it.
- Turn the laptop and connect the mouse, it should work.
Change the settings
Sometimes the mouse works, but behaves strangely. For example, cursor moves too slowly or jerkily. In this case you should check the sensitivity and other settings of the mouse.
- Launch “Control Panel”, go to “Hardware and Sound”.
- Open the “Mouse” item and switch to the “Pointer Settings” tab.
- Pay attention to the “Pointer Speed” option. Set the average value and change it little by little. But don’t overdo it: too much speed can make accuracy worse.
- “Turn on increased pointer accuracy”. this setting often causes problems. Try turning it on or off and see how it works.
- “Mouse cursor trail display”. turning on this option makes a long trail behind the cursor, which many people mistake for a sluggish system. Check and disable this option.
- Open System Preferences.
- Go to “Mouse”.
- Try changing all the settings. Move the sliders and observe the results.
- Access the main menu and open the system preferences.
- Go to “Mouse & Touchpad”.
- Turn on the “User-defined Acceleration” and “User-defined Sensitivity” toggle switches.
- Experiment with different settings.
How to configure your mouse in Windows
Open the “Control Panel”. This settings section can be found by right clicking on the “Start” icon, or by searching the system. On the panel that opens click “Hardware and Sound” → “Mouse“. You will see a window with several tabs that contain different settings for your mouse.
The “Cursor Options” tab is where you can find the cursor speed slider. Move the slider to the desired side and check the mouse in action.
The “Wheel” tab contains the parameters of the mouse wheel. Here you can set the number of lines of text that the image is shifted vertically after one click. And also the number of characters by which the screen shifts horizontally when you tilt the wheel to the side.
In the “Mouse buttons” tab, you can change the assignment of the buttons, so that the right button does what is assigned by default to the left one, and vice versa. This can be useful if you are left-handed. Below is a slider to change the double-click speed: it is better to decrease it if folders do not always open after two clicks.
The “Indexes” tab is used to choose the shape and size of the cursor. Using the “Browse” button, you can select one of the preset or downloaded from the web index types.
Setting up a double click on the mouse
- Open the Mouse Properties dialog box: Start. Control Panel. The mouse.
- Double click options are adjusted in the Double click speed panel. The folder icon next to it is the test area. If two successive clicks are interpreted as double-clicks, the state of the folder changes. it opens or closes.
- Adjust the double-click interval with the Slider Speed.
The modern mice have a wheel in addition to the buttons. It is used for scrolling through documents. If such a mouse is used, the Wheel tab appears in the Properties: Mouse dialog box. It is useful if your computer is used for frequent work with texts. By setting the scroll switch to the specified number of lines, you can set the number of lines of the document corresponding to one-click rotation of the scroll wheel. Alternatively, the Scroll one screen at a time switch. In this case turning the mouse wheel is equivalent to pressing the PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN key,
Recently, you can see more and more special models of manipulators. They are distinguished by an increased number of buttons, two wheels or other unusual controls. Specialized drivers allow you to configure these controls.
Adjusting the scroll wheel and scrolling speed
A little less important parameter which affects the comfort of daily use. To adjust the system’s sensitivity to scrolling the mouse wheel:
Caption. All the same universal menu with mouse settings.
- Open the Options menu any way you like. by clicking on the gear icon in the Start menu or by pressing Win I.
- Let’s go to the “Devices” section by clicking on the tile with the icon of a keyboard and a speaker.
- In the new menu, go to the left panel and open the “Mouse” tab. The parameter we need. “Choose how many lines should scroll at a time”. Let’s adjust the slider to the right values by testing the changes in any appropriate application, for example, by scrolling through the page in the browser with each shift.
- To confirm the settings, click on “Apply” and “OK”.
A similar parameter can be found in the “Properties: Mouse” window. only instead of shifting the slider we will specify the number of lines digitally.
I suggest you consider the following parameters of the computer mouse: the type of device and the connection interface.
By type, computer mice are divided into gyroscopic and optical. Optical mice are more widespread, which are also divided into LED and laser.
A gyroscopic mouse is equipped with a special sensor that determines the position of the device in space. On the plus side, such manipulators do not need a working surface.
The principle of the LED optical mouse are as follows. LEDs, illuminate the surface, which is photographed and analyzed by the image processor. Analysis of consecutive pictures, and allows you to determine the direction of the pointer, as well as its speed.
Laser optical mouse, to illuminate the surface, uses a laser, which allows the receiving photocell to get a better picture, which increases the accuracy of positioning the cursor.
The minus of mice equipped with an optical system is that they can work unstable on transparent, mirrored and polished surfaces.
According to the method of connection, computer mice are divided into wired and wireless.
When wired connection is used USB-interface or PS/2, which is obsolete. The main inconvenience in using a PS/2 interface was that the computer had to be rebooted when the mouse was reconnected. USB-interface, on the other hand, is different in that it supports “hot-swap” mode.
Wireless interface can be divided into two types: Bluetooth connection and radio channel. As a rule, a wireless mouse comes with an adapter (receiver) that connects to the computer via USB. This adapter communicates with the mouse transmitter through a Bluetooth connection, or through a radio channel. Bluetooth-connection is limited up to 10 meters, what cannot be said about the radio channel, where the distance can several times exceed the distance of the Bluetooth-connection.
Do not forget that modern computer mice can have not only a standard set of keys (left, right and scroll wheel), but also have additional buttons, which can be assigned certain functions. The “gamer” mice have the biggest number of buttons.
Read about which computer mouse is worth choosing, based on the specifics of your work.
Choose the “Mouse buttons” tab in the window that will open.
Here you can adjust variations with changing destination of left and right mouse buttons (so called left-right mode).
A little lower in the window is a scroller that can be used to set the speed of response after double-clicking on the left mouse button.
Quite a useful feature, although it has a purely domestic aspect. If the sticking is active, you won’t need to hold down the mouse button when dragging folders and files. It’s enough to press the button for a few seconds and the selected file (folder) will “stick” to the cursor. To end the procedure of dragging and dropping the object, just click on the place where you want to insert the file.
