I’ve been painting for 20 years. Painting. My life. So is teaching. My students say that I have a gift for this. I can explain complex things in simple words and put everything on the shelves in your mind.
In my opinion, the invention of the iPad’s and this is a real breakthrough in illustration! Now you can draw wherever, whenever, and whatever. Oh yes, we can also choose any material. From pencils to oil.
This is so inspiring! And now it seems to you that you can draw absolutely everything. And there is:)
Which iPad is right for drawing?
If your iPad was purchased before 2018, then you can draw on these only in the PRO version.
All iPads released in 2018 and later support the Apple Pencil function and, accordingly, the Procreate app installation.
Aipads with SIM cards are more expensive. Take better without a SIM card. You can always distribute the Internet from your phone;)
As for the memory (32, 64, 128, 256, 512 GB or 1 TB), then, of course, the more the better, but 64 GB is quite enough for me.
Which stylus is suitable for drawing?
Ideally, use the Apple Pencil (1st or 2nd generation depending on your iPad model). Other styluses won’t respond to pressure or tilt, which are the most important properties for drawing on iPad.
Do I need to somehow protect the iPad screen?
I think yes. Even if not much, but over time, the tip of the stylus still scratches the screen of the iPad. To make your gadget last longer, you can stick a glossy or matte protective film or glass on it. The adhesion of the stylus to the screen through glass is slightly worse than through film.
Where to download the Procreate app?
This application is paid (750 rubles). But you will need to pay only once at the first purchase. All future updates are free. You can download the application in the AppStore on your iPad.
What am I drawing on?
– iPad Pro 2017 12.9 “512GB
– iPad mini 2019 7.9 “64GB
– Apple Pencil 1st generation
– Both iPads have a protective matte “paper-like” film that I bought on Aliexpress.
Oil paints are a mixture of dry pigments and oils. In different price segments, there are paints based on linseed, poppy and nut oil. Due to their heavy structure and insolubility in water, such paints are preferred by experienced artists who have already mastered gouache and watercolor.
There are two types of oil paints:
Glazing oil paints will help create a glossy picture through transparency and color depth. This type of paint was used by Rubens, Rembrandt and other masters. Topcoats also allow light to pass through, but they are very dense. Most often they were used by the impressionists of different centuries.
Forms of production of oil paints are various in blisters, in tubes and small cans of 100-250 ml.
Tempera paints consist of a special oil emulsion with the addition of water and a binder (gum arabic or dextrin). These are not oil paints, but also not gouache.
Such paints are very resistant, dry quickly, mix easily with different shades and brighten after drying. So the drawing of a young talent will last for a long time, especially if it was applied to a primed canvas.
Available in tubes, blisters and small bottles. Great for beginners and experienced artists of all ages.
Classification of paints for painting
There are several classifications. Most often, artistic paints are divided by type:
In addition, paints are divided by purpose:
Stained glass (for painting on glass);
For drawing on paper;
For painting on fabrics.
It’s easy to get lost in all this abundance. Nevertheless, knowing the features of each type, choosing the right paint is not difficult.
Gouache paints are made from pasty pigments with the addition of vegetable glue. Among the features of gouache are the velvety and dullness of the dried image.
Minus gouache dries for a long time. On average, each layer of paint dries for at least half an hour. Therefore, it is preferred by older artists who have the patience to wait until it dries completely.
Face paint is a special water-soluble mixture of pigments that can be easily applied to the skin with a sponge or brush moistened with water. With her help, boys and girls easily turn into fairy-tale characters and animals. Paints are easily washed off with water and soap.
Adults also do not stand aside face paints are actively used on Halloween and other holidays.
Available in a variety of crayons, pencils, tiles and tubes of various sizes.
This type of paint is always specially tested, as it is intended for contact with the skin.
Stained glass paints
Stained glass paints have an acrylic base. After drying, the pattern becomes translucent and transmits light. Stained glass is created on a window, on a glass door, or even on crockery. Little artists will certainly enjoy drinking compote from a hand-painted glass.
If we talk about children’s stained-glass paints, then most often they are sold complete with a template, which young decorators will have to decorate with the appropriate colors. There can be from six to twelve colors in the set.
How to choose a drawing tablet
In the modern world, so many things have been invented to realize the creative potential of a person that the creators of the past can only envy. This includes 3d drawing, shop work, and vector programs for designers. However, such a variety of choices also implies difficulties with the selection of the right things. But since progress does not stand still, it is simply necessary to introduce technical innovations into your work or rest.
Those who love to draw probably know what a drawing tablet is. And since drawing has long been transferred to the computer area, the usual drawing tablet has become electronic.
So, a photographic tablet is a kind of device that allows you to enter hand-drawn images into a computer. It consists of a tablet itself with a flat sensitive surface and a pen. This device allows for very accurate reproduction of freehand drawing. If you look at the screen while drawing, you can see that the cursor moves across the computer screen following the pen that the person moves across the tablet. There are also tablets, which, in addition to the pen, are accompanied by a special mouse that works in a similar way to a pen.
The drawing tablet will be an indispensable help for you if you like to draw, photograph or do vector photography. It will help you to electronically reproduce those images that were previously available only for freehand drawing. For the design firm, this also opens up new perspectives: hand-drawn fonts and logos are rare and unique. In addition, tablets have a set of tools that allow you to take brighter and more unusual images.
Selecting a tablet model for drawing
We will assume that you have already decided for sure that you just need a tablet for drawing. It remains now to decide on the model.
When developing tablets, the latest achievements of science and technology are used, and more and more perfect models appear every year.
When choosing a tablet, you need to focus on the model that suits you best not only in terms of functionality, but also in size.
There are three types of tablets:
1. Models intended for drawing. They have a format from A6 to A4 and a lot of necessary functions and tools for converting a drawing by hand into a photographic form. Equipped with a pen and sometimes a mouse.
2. Models, which are a kind of hybrid of a tablet and a monitor, which realize the dream of drawing directly on the computer screen. This type of tablet appeared relatively recently and is considered the most perfect.
3. Small tablets with limited functionality, which are considered more office equipment than a drawing gadget. Their functions will not allow the artist to realize his ideas, however, such tablets are more often used for signing documents electronically. This type also includes an electronic notebook A4 folder, in which you can make notes as in a regular notebook, and then transfer them to a computer.
When buying a drawing tablet, you need to pay attention to the main characteristics:
1. The size (both of the entire tablet and directly of the working surface) is important when you decide whether the tablet will stand on the table or you are going to move with it. The working area should be related to the working area of your monitor so as not to waste space.
2.The resolution of a professional tablet should be 5080 dpi, for amateur drawing, 2040 is enough.
3. The precision and sensitivity of the pen is important for a natural drawing. Modern tablets understand 2048 levels of pen pressure, which allows you to convey the full completeness of hand drawing.
4. The accuracy of the mouse (if any).
5. Tilt angle is a measure of how far the pen can be positioned to the tablet.
6.Working pen height is the height that the pen can be above the tablet without touching it.
The tablet is a true gift for art lovers. Any action, whether it is a phased drawing of a landscape or an animal, a portrait or still life, will become more interesting, and most importantly, it will be possible to post the fruits of your labors in the public domain on the Internet!
As for the manufacturers, it is perhaps worth paying attention to Wacom, but at a price it is not available to everyone. If you want a quality tablet, then you can try the ones from Genius or Aiptek. They are about the same quality, have a number of disadvantages, however, given that they are cheaper than Wacom, you can get used to these disadvantages.
Pros of using a photographic tablet:
You can use a huge number of shades and colors, the choice is not limited;
After creating the next masterpiece, you do not need to spend a lot of time to transfer the drawing to a computer format;
You no longer need to search for different brushes or pencils, all this replaces one pen, the way of drawing which can be changed without spending a lot of time and effort.
Thanks to all these functions, no tablet can compete with the photographic one, since all these functions affect the quality and speed of work.
Despite all the obvious advantages, many still ask the question: Why are photographic tablets expensive? I would like to note right away that this is a reckless prejudice, because for photographic tablets are very different. And this state of affairs depends on many factors:
Display size. Photographic tablets also differ in screen size, and this is an important factor when buying such a device. So, the most expensive tablet can be with a diagonal of 22 inches, and the cheapest with a diagonal of 146 by 93 millimeters.
Resolution and pressure sensitivity. In expensive devices, the resolution can be more than 4 thousand lines per inch, and the sensitivity is about 1023 levels. In the most budgetary photographic tablets, the resolution is much lower, and the sensitivity is poor.
Areas of tasks where the tablet feels great. The broadest: from Internet surfing to performing office tasks. But, as far as photography is concerned, it is not so simple. So can a regular tablet be used as a photographic tablet? Sure! To create beautiful visual content on a non-photographic tablet, it is enough to carry out an easy software upgrade. All you need is a tablet, an internet connection, and a stylus. For iOS and Android, the Global Network has its own programs.
Do I need additional gadgets for photographic tablets?
Some accessories like a mouse and stylus are definitely needed. Actually, with their help, you can realize the ideas of creativity. Using the touchpad and gestures, it is almost impossible to recreate precise lines, shapes and adjust the drawing in the process.

Powerful system filling easily copes with complex game photography and turns 4K without problems.
However, the main feature of the budget iPad. Apple Pencil support that opens up completely new horizons in creativity. The stylus is sensitive to pressure, so you can effortlessly change the thickness of lines, add special effects, just like when manipulating a real pencil. Of course, there are other tablet options for working with photography on TopGuds, but the iPad is best adapted to the needs of artists and other creative people.
Can the photographic tablet be replaced with a regular?
The ideal option would be to use tablets that have an active digitizer built into the screen that works in tandem with an active pressure-sensitive digital pen.
As for the use of a photographic tablet as a device for business, here, depending on the model, questions may arise about energy efficiency and autonomy.
Ipad drawing tablet
The program, which was called so uncomplicated, turned out to be a very high quality and deep product. If as a child you drew in scrapbooks with pencils and paints, translating tons of paper, now, thanks to modern technologies, it is possible to draw in such applications. Over, the opportunities for a modern child with this program have become much more, because the iPad as a tablet for drawing is simply a gorgeous thing.
In a good drawing program, everything should be pleasant: from the menu to the drawing process. A quick glance is enough to understand that we have an excellent program.
We have pencils, brushes, markers, felt-tip pens, stickers at our disposal
There are enough tools and opportunities to create a mini-masterpiece. Over, the developers competently approached the number of tools: if we have felt-tip pens, then there are several dozen colors, if there are stickers, then there are also more than a hundred of them. I remember how as a child I wanted felt-tip pens, where there were about 40 different colors in the pack, dreams come true 20 years later.
How do you like this tool?
It is very convenient to draw in the program with your finger! Even the choice of paper was provided by the developers. Note: what you see in the screenshot is not the entire assortment by moving your finger up or down the toolbox you can flip through (this applies to all tools in the program).
And do not forget to save the drawing to your personal sketchbook before drawing a new one.
