Why bathe a land tortoise at home? Bathing for reptiles is a natural way to cleanse the skin and shell from pollution, as well as a procedure necessary to stimulate the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. It is not difficult to wash a land turtle, even a school-age child can easily cope with this process.
What you need for swimming reptiles
Land turtles can be bathed in any convenient container, which should fit the size of a pet: an adult animal should be completely comfortable in it. Reptile can be washed in any cup, basin or container. If you need to bathe several individuals of Central Asian turtles, it is enough to use one capacious capacity, or wash your pets one at a time. It is unacceptable to leave your pet in a sink or bathtub under running tap water because of the risk of hypothermia, burns or choking of the reptile.
A hygiene procedure to remove contaminants from the body of turtles is recommended to be carried out in boiled or filtered water. It is permissible for bathing pets to use a decoction of chamomile, which has a beneficial effect on the outer integument of the reptile. The amount of water before the procedure must be prepared with an additional supply, since turtles can defecate directly in the water while swimming.
It is highly recommended not to bathe the Central Asian tortoise using shampoos or soaps; chemicals are detrimental to delicate skin and horn plates of the shell. To remove strong impurities, you can use a liquid baby or hypoallergenic soap, which you can wash your pet no more than once a week.
To avoid mechanical damage to the integrity of the skin and protective shields, do not remove adhered dirt with sharp objects or brushes. To wash the carapace and limbs, you can use a soft sponge or cloth, the turtle’s head and neck can be washed only with hands.
Before you start bathing or washing a land turtle, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the basic norms of a hygienic procedure in order to avoid complications or unpleasant consequences that could cause damage to the animal’s health.
Rules for swimming Central Asian turtles:
- Frequency – young animals up to three years old must be bathed daily or every other day. Very often it is not recommended to carry out body cleaning for adults, 1-2 times a week is enough for them. If in the terrarium of the pet a bathing set with water is installed in which the animal is completely placed, the need for bathing the reptile disappears.
- Water temperature. The optimum temperature for the adoption of "turtle" is considered water 30-35C. Colder water can cause hypothermia and the development of catarrhal diseases in animals; hot water can cause burns to the surface. It is not necessary to use a thermometer for each procedure, for a healthy person, water at a temperature of 30-35C feels slightly warm.
- Water level. Pour water or decoction of chamomile in the bath is necessary in such an amount that the pet in a lying position was covered no more than 2/3 of the height of the body. While bathing several individuals, the water level must be measured by the smallest turtle.
- Duration. Properly bathe Central Asian turtles for 20-30 minutes, a longer procedure in the cooled water can lead to hypothermia and a cold. It is permissible to install a fluorescent lamp near the bath. Washing of the shell and skin using soap is recommended at the end of the bath.
How to bathe and wash reptiles
Preparation of bathing tanks, tools and water heating must be carried out in the absence of an animal. When everything is ready, one or more turtles are placed in a bath, which should be in a dry and warm room near the source of daylight. During the procedure, the owner should look after the behavior of a little friend.
Turtles that take a bath quite strongly contaminate the tank with their bowel movements. In this case, it is necessary to change the water, or you can rinse your pet at the end of the procedure in clean water. Often reptiles try to drink water while washing and blow bubbles into the water. This is not a cause for concern.
If there is severe contamination on the skin and the shell, you can use a liquid baby soap, applied to a rag or sponge. The dirt is washed off with the help of gentle gentle movements, it is forbidden to crush or scrape the integument of the animal. Dry food or dirt from the neck and head is removed with your fingers, massaging the skin of the pet. If the turtle hides in a shell and refuses a hygienic procedure, you can turn on running water, which causes a reflex extension of the neck.
At the end of the bath, it is necessary to rinse the reptile in a new portion of clean water. If soap was used to wash the turtle, or strong impurities that are difficult to wash off are present, it is necessary to wash the skin and shell of the animal under a stream of warm running water, holding the pet firmly in its hands.
A clean, bought turtle must be placed in a warm terrarium under a daylight source. Drafts, a cold floor or a street after a warm bath can cause a little friend to be cold.
Thanks to bathing, the outer integuments of the Central Asian tortoise are saturated with water, the digestive and excretory systems are stimulated, and the body’s tone is increased. Cleanliness, proper diet and optimal conditions of detention are the key to the health and longevity of an exotic pet.
