How to set up an aquarium for a water turtle
Aquarium size: 40-50 liters for a turtle up to 10 cm long; 90-120 l for a turtle up to 20 cm long; 120-200-. l for two turtles up to 20 cm long or one turtle larger than 20 cm.
Water: suitable for the species, usually from a tap or standing
Type of aquarium: with a flat shore, on which there is a lamp for heating
Where to get the aquarium?
3. Carrying. For small turtles at first, the carrying, the main thing, will also work. manage to place a heater in it, and on top. a lamp. Therefore, a plastic dune with a palm does not fit.
In English there is such a terrarium term – "Death bowl". It can be translated as “Bowl of Death”, “Death Cup”, in general, who has enough imagination to call this basin. This word is called – what would you think? Yes, those very miserable small containers with a palm tree and colored soil, in which naive buyers have red-eared turtles!
Actually, this thing was called so for a reason. This is really not something that any turtle can be kept in. And yes, multi-colored pebbles, a palm tree and a cute green turtle, which the seller sells under the guise of a dwarf decorative one, are all very pleasing to the eye, but all this husk, as many know, has nothing to do with reality. Not a single turtle, as the description says correctly, lives on the beach with a mini-palm – everyone needs water, a lot of water and a lot of space for movement. It’s even a pity that somehow we still haven’t taken root in any capacious and fair name for this trough – because it’s just in our country that the scale of the disaster can hardly be overestimated.
Shape, length, width, height, material, volume?
The shape of the aquarium is only horizontal, turtles swim mainly in length, and not in depth.
Aquarium material: glass, non-toxic plastic. It can be indoor or outdoor. In closed there should be a ventilation system.
The total volume of the aquarium, depending on the size of the turtle, can be from 40 to 120 liters. If there are more turtles, then the aquarium is taken larger. At the same time, the water in the aquarium is not poured over the entire volume of the aquarium, but about half.
Average size of the aquarium: 70x40x40 (length, width, height), approximately 100 liters of volume. For 1-2 turtles: the length of the aquarium should be 7 times the length of the shell of the largest turtle, the width of the aquarium should be approximately half its length. For each additional turtle we add about a tenth of the bottom area.
How much water to pour, what should it be?
The water should be about half the aquarium. The height of the water can be 2-3 turtles, for large water it can be more. The water level should exceed twice the length of the shell of the smallest turtle, if there are several.
The water should be clean and warm enough (about 26-32 ° C) depending on the needs of the turtle species. Moderately chlorinated tap water is not dangerous for turtles, although small turtles can rub their eyes for the first time after changing the water. Water must be changed as it becomes soiled, but at least 1 time per month.
Land or shore in an aquarium
The ratio of land to water should be 20% to 80%. The shore should be such that the turtle could easily climb onto it, but could not jump out of the terrarium (the height from the shore to the edge of the terrarium should be more than 20-30 cm). The land or island should be so large that all animals can simultaneously be accommodated on it, and the weak ones should not be forced out and do not collide in the water.

Equipment for the Red-eared Turtle Aquarium
The maintenance of a red-eared turtle at home implies the arrangement of an aquarium for it – a terrarium in such a content that everything that a reptile needs is there. That is why the equipment for the aquarium of the red-eared turtle must meet all the needs of this rather whimsical animal.
First of all, the aquatic red-eared turtle needs an island on which it will breathe oxygen and receive light ultraviolet rays. Such an island can be made independently from improvised materials that will not be too consumed in the aquatic environment and thus serve for a sufficiently long period of time.
Lighting equipment must be included in the equipment of the aquarium for turtles, as well as devices that allow you to filter and ionize the water space of your red-eared turtle. The lighting of the aquarium-terrarium for the reptile should be of two types, namely: the ordinary incandescent lamp (popularly called the “Ilyich’s bulb”) and the ultraviolet lamp that will create the so-called “sun” for your red-eared turtle should be used for heat ultraviolet light.
Filtration of the aquarium-terrarium for the red-eared turtle is necessary because these reptiles form a lot of secretions that should be periodically cleaned from the aquarium-the terrarium for the red-eared turtle.
What water is suitable for red-eared turtles
Trachemys tortoise belongs to the family of freshwater American turtles. In natural conditions, they prefer small warm lakes and ponds with marshy banks, river floodplains and shallow marshes. These reptiles need fresh water, which adults can do without for more than a couple of days. Water for red-eared turtles is a bedroom, a dining room, and a gym. However, for proper development and health, a pet in an aquarararium needs a small (about ¼ of the entire surface) island of warm land.
Ways to keep the temperature in the aquarium
Creating optimal conditions for these reptiles is a multi-step task and not an easy one. The aquaterrarium should be spacious and necessarily elongated. Water occupies ¾ of the total volume of the dwelling.
The water temperature for red-eared turtles, as well as the duration of their daylight hours, depends on the time of year. The following indicators will be ideal for adult representatives:
- in winter and spring: 20⁰С (not lower). 25 ° C with 8 hours of lighting;
- in summer: 25-28⁰ With lighting up to 13 hours;
- in autumn: 22-26 ° C and 8 hours of daylight.
For young individuals (up to three years), the water temperature should not drop below 25 degrees.
Short temperature deviations are acceptable, but prolonged maintenance at low temperatures leads to poor health and serious diseases of the lungs and skin.
To maintain the temperature within the required limits allows a conventional immersion heater for aquariums with a thermostat. To heat a dry area, additional sources of light and heat may be required: the Repty-Glo reptile lamp is best suited, an ordinary incandescent lamp with a power of up to 60 W, ultraviolet or medical “solar” is also suitable, you can use a lamp with a mirror coating and direct it to a specific plot, thereby creating a warmer (but not more than 33 degrees) zone. To avoid burns to the pet, it is necessary to have a light source at least 60 cm above the water level.
The depth of the pond in the terrarium should correspond to the age and size of the turtle, to allow it to move freely, and on average be at least 25 centimeters.
Water for Red-eared Turtles from the tap
Fresh water of medium hardness with an active reaction of pH in the range of 6.5 – 7.5 is suitable for keeping red-eared turtles. This is an approximate indicator of tap water, but it is better not to pour it directly from the tap. Tap water is disinfected with chlorine, which will disappear in a day when it settles. Here is such a well-maintained, it is best to use for partial replacement. It is undesirable to completely change the water during harvesting, since it takes quite a long time to mature the beneficial microorganisms and form the correct microclimate. And since harvesting is necessary regular, the ecosystem with a complete change of water will never come into balance.
Cleanliness – a guarantee of longevity and health
The basis of the "rubella" diet is animal feed, so when feeding in the aquarium, water is contaminated very quickly. To avoid this, you can transplant your pet into a separate container (a suitable plastic basin of suitable size) filled with warm water for the duration of the meal. But even with this method of feeding, harvesting should be regular. The more water a pet has, the less often it is necessary to clean its home. A prerequisite for cleanliness and ventilation is the presence of a powerful filter. For kids, an internal submersible is enough, but after three years a more powerful external filter will be required. Water for red-eared turtles at home does not require additional additives or treatments.
