Turtles are unique animals, they are very different from all the others in their external data and certain characteristics. These reptiles can be both land or water. It is interesting that even these inhabitants of the animal world were domesticated.
Small turtles people keep at home in aquariums. Such pets are often bought for children. The positive point in this case is that children can hardly harm the turtle, accidentally or deliberately, because it is protected by a hard shell.
In the event that you start a turtle purely for yourself, then you should know how long it will live with you, how long your friendship will last.
The age limits that the turtle lives in may be the most diverse, but one thing is certain, these are some of the longest-living animals on the planet. Despite the wide variety of species of these reptiles, and there are more than two hundred and ninety variants, the life span of almost all is quite long. It is believed that on average they live up to one hundred and fifty years.
Turtles are unique creatures, they have existed since ancient times and did not die out, continuing their existence. And besides, it was these reptiles that were able to develop immunity to diseases, hence they are not affected. An interesting fact is that the metabolic processes in the body of the turtle are very slow, hence it grows up to about twenty years, and at this age can give offspring. Thanks to this feature, turtles can live such a long stretch of life.
Since turtles can be land and water, these characteristics affect their appearance and other functions. The shell of aquatic species is flatter, and the land, more convex. An interesting feature is that the body of the turtle itself has completely grown to the shell, and is part of it, that is, it is impossible to extract it from it. In the shield itself there are compartments through which the turtle can hide all its limbs and thereby protect itself.
What is the life span of a turtle? The period of life lived by each turtle can have its own length, which often depends solely on external factors. If these are domestic species, then the whole responsibility rests with the owner of the reptile, if he follows the correct diet, the regime for the turtle and all the other nuances, then the pet will please its friendship for many years. In the case of a violation of at least some of the aspects, the life cycle is reduced significantly.
Turtles belong to those animals that are distinguished by strong health, good endurance and immunity, which saves the reptile in case of any not too serious injuries, and helps the wound to heal quickly and without consequences. Interestingly, these animals can not consume any food for a long time, and at the same time survive.
Giant turtles are considered to be the individuals who live the longest, and it is they who can survive up to two hundred years, or more. This phenomenon is explained by metabolism, which is much slower than that of their other relatives.
But a much larger number of simple turtles live from twenty to thirty years. The life expectancy of red-eared turtles is also thirty years. But she can reach this age if the living conditions are decent.
As for land turtles, it is believed that many of the species can reach the mark of a hundred years, and there are those that cross it. Following the example of an elephant turtle, you can see that this species can live one hundred and fifty years. The species of spurred turtles lived to be one hundred and fifteen years old.
It is worth mentioning the life expectancy of the Central Asian tortoise, which at the moment is one of the most common species of these reptiles. Usually this species lives about forty years, but there are individuals, long-livers. The marion tortoise lived one hundred and fifty-two years, but the representatives of the Galapagos Islands live two hundred years. How many tortoises live in the wild, and how many in comfortable conditions, these are two different numbers. Most often, it is the conditions of wild habitat that reduce the duration to twenty or thirty years. As for domestic turtles of this species, they live as long as the owner can give them. With proper care, the reptile goes through its natural life cycle of thirty years, and there have been cases of a longer existence.
It will be interesting to compare land and water turtles for their longevity. As an example, consider the European marsh turtle. Its place of origin is Europe, but at the moment it lives everywhere in the eastern hemisphere. This reptile prefers to live exclusively in fresh water, although there have been cases when this species was found in salt waters. If you keep this species of turtles at home, then it will live for about thirty years, but in its natural environment the age limits are much wider, this species can live for about one hundred and twenty years.
It is also important to talk about how many years the red-eared turtle lives. This species in its framework of life expectancy is not very different from its other relatives. The rubella tortoise lives on average thirty years. But it is important to know that with improper care, life expectancy can dramatically decrease. The rubella tortoise belongs to the decorative species, its feature is that it prefers to be in the water and to have a place for walking. If she does not have at least one of the components, then for a long time she will not be able to live like that.
Not many people know that red-eared turtles, how many live in the natural environment, will not be able to live at home, and vice versa. If home conditions allow them to reach the mark of thirty years, then in the wild, age increases to fifty years, or even completely to seventy.
The following are worth considering sea turtles. These reptiles can live for about eighty years. This species is now on the verge of extinction, and the reasons for this are very simple. Turtles die due to circumstances such as: death in the embryonic state, which is caused by too high, or vice versa, very low temperatures; the death of hatched babies who do not have time to reach the water, because other predatory animals eat them; and another part perishes already in the water, because there too there are enemies who prey on such babies.
It is interesting to talk about how much turtles can do without body of water. Most often, the turtle needs water daily, to one degree or another, but they can also go to certain spaces, while being without water. The maximum duration of a life of residence is considered two or three days, more than a reptile can’t stand it, and if it cannot reach a source of moisture for a long time, it dies.
Having examined some representatives of the turtle world, we can confidently say that these reptiles live much longer in their natural environment than at home, although the life expectancy of both of them is quite large.
It will not be superfluous to recall how many years the red-eared turtles, European bogs, and Central Asian turtles live, their life cycle is from twenty to thirty years. If we compare other domestic animals, then very few of them can compete with the turtles, no matter what kind they are.
Turtles can be of the most diverse species, and the first thing they differ in is their size. The largest land tortoise is the elephant. The length of such a reptile can be up to one meter eighty centimeters, and body weight reaches three hundred kilograms. This type is not subject to home maintenance.
At home, most often keep those individuals that are no more than forty centimeters in length, because a larger animal will take up a lot of space and create discomfort. Turtles can grow in the home, for this they only need to provide a spacious house. Anyone who wants to become the owner of the largest domestic turtle should monitor the dimensions of his pet, and when he stops growing, immediately change the aquarium to a larger one. If you do not want to have a huge turtle at home, hold it in a small house for a long time, and it will stop growing.
Summing up, we can say that turtles are inherently very interesting and unusual animals, their ability to adapt to living conditions is, in fact, unique, few of the inhabitants of the globe can boast the same. The age of these reptiles is highly dependent on where exactly they live. In conditions of freedom and comfortable existence, there are species that can exist up to two hundred years or more. Those turtles that live next to people often live thirty years. Despite the fact that these animals are very hardy and unpretentious, they still need to create certain conditions, otherwise they will not live their declared age.
