Computer Literacy with Hope
The main things in a computer are the processor and RAM. But they only work when the computer is on. What happens to the information when the computer is turned off?
Then the information is stored on the hard disk (hard drive). When the computer is turned on, it boots from its hard drive.
There are other storage devices. floppy disks, flash drives, CDs, and DVDs.
SSD yield values
Production life SSD manufacturers usually indicate in the form of values:. TBW. guaranteed total amount of rewritable data;. MTBF. guaranteed total running time of the device.
TBW (Total Bytes Written) is the value of the resource of the SSD memory cells. It is expressed in the total amount of data written to the disk by the manufacturer. And this volume is measured in TB (terabytes). Т.е. TBW is the specific number of TBs that can be written to an SSD over its lifetime. Once this total capacity is reached, the drive’s memory cells should theoretically wear out, and no further data will be written to them by the manufacturer.
Each SSD cell is designed for a certain number of rewrite cycles, but if manufacturers had specified that number of cycles as the life expectancy of an SSD, it would not make much sense to most users. And in its pure form, this value would be inaccurate, because different SSDs have different mechanisms for writing data, which can affect the overall lifespan of the device. That’s why SSD manufacturers offer us their calculated total amount of guaranteed write endurance, which is based on the possible number of cell rewrite cycles and the number of cells. The more cells, the higher the TBW value will be. So, accordingly, SSD disks with bigger capacity will have longer TBW life than disks with smaller capacity.
Here’s an example from the Nix website.Ru you can find one Western Digital 250GB SSD listed at 100 TBW.
Т.е. is 100Tb is the total amount of recorded data the manufacturer guarantees. This is a lot or a little? That’s more than enough for the average person. If we divide that 100 TB by, say, 10 years of an SSD’s lifetime, that’s 10 TB per year, and 833 GB per month. Well, divide this number by 30 calendar days and you get 27.76 GB of overwriting data every day.
But not all manufacturers specify TBW value in their SSD specifications. They often quote only the total MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure), t.е. its MTBF. As, for example, on the same site Nix.One of the Silicon Power 120GB models has an MTBF of 1.5 million. hours. 1.5 mln. hours is 62,500 days, that’s over 170 years.
Total SSD running time. all the time that the disk can theoretically work regardless of the fact of his work of any operations. It’s all the theoretical amount of time the drive can theoretically operate, not including memory cell wear, controller and firmware corruption, power problems, etc. MTBF is nothing more than information for your information, bare theory, no drive will last 170 years, if it is fully exploited, it will fail much earlier due to one of these factors.
MTBF value can not be put in the basis of real SSD lifetime calculations, so if you are going to buy an SSD-disk, it is desirable to take such a model, that in its characteristics the manufacturer has specified TBW.
The above methods are enough to give us the information we need. But as usual we can’t avoid mentioning third-party programs that help to know the model and size of the hard drive, as well as analyze and check the condition of the hard drive.
Also, you can see the size of the hard drive and its partitions in the “Computer Management” window.
As before, everything is easy enough, and as you can see, most of the ways to determine the parameters of the devices are repeated. Remembering them, because of this, is also easier.

Sometimes it seems that even the largest hard drive will fill up within a short period of time. Maybe you do not want to erase the information from an old disk, or you need a new disk to keep certain data on it. But keep in mind that the internal space of the computer case is not infinite. Here are some methods you can use to free up space and use an extra hard drive.
- If you just want to plug in and use the drive, buy one without the extra power supply.
- If you back up your data regularly, get a drive with special software that makes backups.
- Pay attention to the transfer speed of the USB interface. The latest USB spec (USB 3.0) provides increased data transfer speeds, but your computer must have an appropriate USB port (remember that USB ports and cables are backwards compatible).
Connect your external hard drive. Most external hard drives are connected to your computer with a USB cable, but some are connected with a SATA cable. When your external drive is connected it will be automatically recognized by the system and you can start using it.
Make sure the system recognizes the external hard drive. To do this, open Windows Explorer (or the Computer window) and make sure that the external drive is listed under all connected drives. You may now use an external hard drive.
You may wish to consider whether you need a network drive. This drive is needed for storing and sharing information with other users on the same network. importantly, use a network drive if you want to access your data remotely from any computer.
- If the external drive requires additional power, plug the adapter to an electrical outlet.
- Connect the drive to the network. Use a router or modem and an Ethernet or USB cable.
- Go to “This Computer” “Connect Network Drive”.
- Select the drive letter and click “Browse”.
- Select the network drive from the list and press “OK.
Open a network drive. To do this, open Windows Explorer and find the network drive in the list of all connected media.
- The internal hard drive and optical drive are connected to the motherboard via an IDE cable or SATA cable. Some hard drives are sold with the necessary cable, while others are sold without, so if this is the case, you will need to buy a cable separately.

Choose a hard drive that keeps your data safe. Gonzalo Martinez, an Apple hardware repairman, says, “When you erase a standard hard drive, the areas it covers are overwritten with zeros. There is sophisticated software that allows you to retrieve deleted files. SSDs are more data-secure because it is very, very hard to delete previously deleted data from an SSD.
How to see disk usage level using the Settings app
To view all storage devices connected to your computer in the Settings app, use the following steps.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Device Memory.
- In the Other storage options section, select the link View the level of memory usage on other drives.
The Local Storage page that opens displays a list of all available drives (in particular, other logical partitions on the hard drive, removable hard drives, and USB drives).
In addition, as with previous versions, in Windows 10 version 1903 you can immediately see the storage utilization of each drive. Select a specific drive to see more information about the space taken up, and to remove temporary files and other unused objects on the drive.

In this article you will learn how to find out how much free space there is on the hard drive of your computer or in the memory of your smartphone. Do not confuse this process with checking the free RAM, which usually refers to the RAM (operative storage device) of your computer.
- If the Options window does not open the home page, press the “Back” button in the upper left corner of the screen until it is no longer active.
Check how your hard drive’s space is being used. Under “Local Disk” at the top of the page, you will see a hard drive icon with the options “Busy” and “Free”. The number for the “Busy” option indicates the amount of hard disk space used, and the number for the “Free” option indicates the amount of empty hard disk space.
Open your hard drive. Click on its icon under “Local Drive. A list of files and programs will open with information about the space they are taking up on your hard drive, and you can use the list to find out which files and/or programs you need to delete to clear up space on your drive.
“How Do I Know How Much Free Disk Space I Have On My Mac??”

Gonzalo Martinez, an Apple repair specialist and president of CleverTech, answers: “In the upper left corner, look for the Apple logo. Click on it, find “About this Mac” and click on the “Storage” tab (there will be six in total. choose the right one). Here you can find out the name of your hard drive, its total capacity and how much free space is left”.
How many hard drives you need
Based on the above, we can conclude that on average it is rational to use from 1 to 4 hard drives on modern computers. Anything higher than that is, in my opinion, overkill.
It is not the number of hard drives that determines PC usability, but their total capacity. I do not advise you to use your old hard drives to the very last minute, but buy more and more memory. The more of them you have, the more likely it is that one of them will fail.
The best option is to install one, maximum two high-capacity HDDs. for example, 3TB each. Enough for a small movie library or a very large phono library, and a decent amount of game storage.

How to know the model of a hard drive in Windows 7 and in Windows 10
Capacity of internal PC memory can be checked with standard “System Information” utility. The advantage of this method is that you can see not only the total capacity of the hard drive, but also additional information that may be useful to the user.
To run it, you need to press the combination Win R and enter msinfo32 in the search box that opens, then click OK. The “System Information” utility window opens, where you expand the “Components” menu, then “Mass Storage Devices”. “Disks”.
For each physical partition, i.e. individual device, the information is displayed separately. For example, if you have a smaller hard drive with an operating system and a larger hard drive for content, split into two partitions, one of the tabs will have information on storage C: and the other on D: and E:
At this point a beginner may ask a natural question: why does the indicator does not show the full amount of memory on the magnetic disk?? This has to do with different systems for calculating memory size. Let’s take for example HDD with 500 GB.
In decimal, that would be 500 GB, which is more understandable to the average user and is what is shown on the nameplate. But the PC uses binary notation. In this case, a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, not 1000, and a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, etc.д.
And so, until the calculation reaches gigabytes, little by little “adds up” that some memory is allegedly lost. A 500GB hard drive will show up as having only 465GB of free space (in binary).
There is a joke connected with this feature, when the client, after buying a Hard drive of 500 GB, saw only 465 GB on his PC and went to complain to the seller that they had stolen 35 GB. A comical situation, especially if you know what’s what.
How to determine which interface is used
I think now it is quite clear to you what exactly this connector is used for. I would like to emphasize that modern home computers almost always use SATA. If you have any doubts and you are wondering how to find out which connector of my PC, it is enough to open the lid of your system and look at. Luckily these interfaces do not look alike so you can not confuse them.
As a recommendation, I would recommend Toshiba P300 1TB 7200rpm 64MB HDWD110UZSVA 3.5 SATA III. Also if you are going to buy a hard disk I recommend to read “Hard disk manufacturers: who is better or what company to choose” and “Where to buy components for the system unit”.
