Computer can’t see the disk. Hard Disk is not Detected
What to do if your computer/laptop/camera/etc.п. does not see the disk.
This article will help you understand what to do when your computer can’t see the disk. Might give you insight into things you didn’t know you “heard” about. Most importantly. it will help you take concrete steps towards solving the problem or keep you from acting rashly. To keep it that way, please don’t try to treat this text as a step-by-step instruction. First read the article completely, think about it, and then (or not) take action.
How to “enable” a second hard disk or SSD in Windows
All we need to fix the problem of a disk that is not visible is the built-in “Disk Management” utility, which is present in Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10.
To run it, press the Windows R keys on your keyboard (where Windows is the key with the corresponding emblem) and in the “Run” window that appears type diskmgmt.msc then press Enter.
After a short initialization, the Disk Management window will open. In it, you should pay attention to the following things at the bottom of the window: are there any disks that have the following information in their information.
- “No Data. Not initialized” (in case you do not see a physical HDD or SSD).
- Are there any areas on your hard drive that say “Unallocated” (in case you do not see a partition on the same physical drive).
- If you see neither of them, but instead see a RAW partition (on a physical or logical disk) and also an NTFS or FAT32 partition which is not visible in Explorer and has no drive letter. just right-click on such partition and select either “Format” (for RAW) or “Assign Drive Letter” (for already formatted partition). If the disk had data on it, see “To recover data from a RAW disk” on page 16. How to repair RAW disk.
In the first case, right-click on the disk name and choose “Initialize Disk” from the menu. In the window that appears next, you will need to select a partition structure. GPT (GUID) or MBR (in Windows 7, this option may not appear).
I recommend using MBR for Windows 7 and GPT for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (assuming that they are installed on a modern computer). Choose MBR if you are not sure.
When you have finished initializing the disk, you will get an “Unallocated” area on it. t.е. The second of the two cases described above.
The next step for the first case and the only one for the second is to right-click on the unallocated area and select the “Create Simple Volume” menu item.
After that, you will only have to follow the instructions of the Volume Wizard: assign a letter, select the file system (NTFS if in doubt) and the size.
As for the size. by default the new disk or partition will take up all free space. If you need to create several partitions on the same disc, specify the size manually (less than the free space available) and then follow the same procedure for the remaining unallocated space.
Once these steps are completed, the second disk will appear in Windows Explorer and be usable.
Also Windows 10 or Windows 7 may not see the hard drive if it is not formatted properly. This applies to almost all newly purchased hard drives. Let’s make it right:
You have to do it yourself because unfortunately a hard disk, even very advanced and expensive ones, do not initialize themselves. The system cannot decide for you which format to choose, which name to show in Windows and how to structure the information in order to integrate the HDD into the PC in the best way possible.
If the computer does not see the drive, you need to determine the “culprits”. That is, to find out whether the problem lies in the device itself or in the system. You have to connect the hard drive to another computer to do that.
If it recognizes the device, then the problem is in the system, but if not, then the hard drive itself is defective. Further work on it is better to entrust the masters. Or take advantage of warranty replacement or repair.
If the problem is in the “native” hard disk system, there are several ways to fix it by your own efforts. The few things you can do yourself will help you to avoid paying for professional services.
- To enter the BIOS settings, press F2 or Del until the system starts booting;
- It is better to remember the correct connection of cables with SATA outputs;
- It is better to wrap the hard drive taken out of the system unit with antistatic;
- It is always better to put the lower part of the device, the one with the circuit boards, on the antistatic.

Some helpful hints
- You can enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2 or Del until the system starts booting;
- It is better to remember the correct connection of the cables with SATA outputs;
- It is better to wrap the hard drive taken out of the system box with anti-static;
- It is always better to put the bottom of the device that has the circuit boards on the antistatic.
The computer does not see the hard drive, the old one.
In this case we will consider the moment when the computer does not see the hard drive that has already been installed in the system unit.
Start. Control Panel. System and Security Settings. Administrative Tools. Computer Management.
Among the list, find your hard drive and change its letter.
- Another way is to check the disk for viruses. Use an antivirus program. Some viruses affect the display of the hard drive in your computer.
- A third way to determine the problem is to go to Device Manager and look for the correct identification of the attached device (the device name must not contain hieroglyphs and signs).
- You can also try reinstalling the drivers for your USB controller.
- You may need to connect it to a different computer and if it is OK then reinstall Windows.
- Cleaning the registry and optimizing your computer helps with this problem. There is a separate article on this blog about this topic
- Try plugging the drive through a different connector. Maybe the problem is a bad USB port.
- And lastly, check the integrity of the cords. You might have a bad connection because of damage.
As a side note! If you notice, at the end of each article I tell you what I’ve posted before. So be sure to read how to delete tweets in. Also how to check the video card on your computer. You can also see where to download Bluetooth to your laptop for free.
As you can see, there may be many reasons why the computer can not see the hard drive. Try it, I hope you will be able to fix it. Your questions, please ask in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев, and I will be happy to answer them. I wish you all peace!
By the way, I had a tablet with Windows, just took a friend to use, not mine, connected well. And then I wondered, but if the tablet is running Linux, will the tablet see the com, because linux and Windows on different cores, plus the file system is different. water is such a question is interested, who knows tell me) would be grateful)
Not a computer does not see, and Windows does not see, this, and this, as they say, two big differences. When a computer can’t see the disk, it is not present in the boot menu, nor in disk management.
Greetings, Alexander! I try to name articles as people understand it. After all, these are the queries they ask in search engines)
The computer does not see the new hard drive. that was my search query) thanks to the author. I’m just not a “programmer” and this article helped me.
Thanks for the article, it helps.I forget where to look after reinstalling)), usually everything is in place.
Thanks. It was very helpful. My computer couldn’t recognize the drive because I didn’t assign it a letter! Thank you.
Good evening Eugene! The article is useful, but suitable for my problem. The thing is, the external drive (Western Digital My Book World Edition 1TB) over the past couple of weeks of life has been on and off. One day it completely stopped appearing, both in Disk Management and in BIOS. The controller (PCB board) is broken, I`m sure. The System Restore did not help. I connected it directly (instead of the disk drive) and it appeared in BIOS, the system automatically installed the driver and in “Disk Management” it also appeared. It`s not in Explorer and the playlist in WMP can`t play only those mp3 files, that are in it. Been searching and reading different forums and articles for days now, haven’t found a solution to a similar problem. It is not possible to change the drive letter, this option is not displayed when right-clicking on the drive, unlike the main C drive. What to do? Windows 7, Asus P6T, Intel i7 920, GeForce GTX285, Antec EA-500 PS PS: It has the information I need.
Either the hard disk is slowly dying, or the box the hard disk is in is not working. Try to check the working capacity of the hard drive by connecting it to another computer.
I don’t understand why you are writing this. I already wrote that the controller (PCB board) is dead and if you connect it directly to the computer, the drive is no longer in the box. I have no second computer. It was stolen from the basement.
How to determine the cause of malfunction
It is recommended to check HHD drive connection in the system unit step by step.
Connecting the drive to the motherboard.the board
Modern drives have SATA power and data connections. You can connect only with the system unit disconnected from the mains. Hard disk is connected to the specified ports.
It is possible to connect using a twin cable.
A data cable connects to an available port on the motherboard. The power cable at the other end connects to the molex-mother port through the molex-pair port.
That’s all. Check that the cables are securely connected, and then start the computer.
Check if the hardware is working
Check if UEFI can see the hard drive you just installed. With the computer on, press the “Del” key to bring up UEFI (the old BIOS name).
- Go to advanced settings (F7).
- Open the “Advanced” section.
- Expand the SATA configuration line.
- Here you will see the SATA model of your connected devices, i.e. your hard drive.
If the hard disk is detected, but for some reason you cannot use it (open it in the system) or launch an installed system from it, you need to check its “health” with special programs for diagnostics.
It is recommended to do the same if your disk is not even displayed in BIOS.
Using diagnostic programs
If it is a secondary drive and the system is running from another one. Windows has its own media diagnostic utility. Of course it can not do what some professional utilities do, but it can handle simple tasks.
To start it, click on “Start” and bring up “Disk Management.
To locate the missing drive, click on Action. “Repeat Disk Check” and then scroll down, checking all the HDDs found. It is possible that it is visible in the system, but it has no volume letter assigned (no allocation of space).
advanced utilities are considered:
- Victoria HDD. check your hard drive, search for bad sectors, reanimate bad sectors or reassign them, perform all kinds of tests. Running in BIOS mode.
- HDD Scan is a portable utility for Windows, designed for HDD and SDD diagnostics.
- HD Tune is another Windows program with error detection and troubleshooting functions.
Insufficient power and weak cooling system
A weak power supply is another common cause. Listen to the system’s performance. If you hear alternating whirring noises, which is unusual for a normal PSU, most likely it cannot cope with the energy supply of the computer hardware. To fix the problem you will need to replace the component with a more powerful one.
Through insufficient cooling of the PC system or laptop hardware can also fail. The problem is more susceptible to notebooks with weak fans, which are actively used. In such a case, it is a good idea to buy a supplementary cooling pad. You will see that the system will not only work correctly, but also will execute commands faster.
Do not forget about the device maintenance. Over time dust gathers in the ventilation system and on other components. As a result, the device overheats and refuses to work properly. That is why you should clean it regularly.
Various kinds of mechanical damages
After trying all of the above methods and without results we can be almost 100% sure that the problem is caused by a malfunction. Try to connect the hard disk to another PC. This will help verify that the device is faulty. If the HDD does not see the other computer, you must go to the service center, as the problem can not be corrected at the software level.
In this article we have considered all possible causes of HDD failure. Have patience and try every method. if you follow the instructions carefully your computer will definitely be able to see your hard drive.
