This article describes how to troubleshoot iOS update and recovery errors.

Priority actions

  1. Make sure your Mac is running the latest software version on macOS Catalina 10.15. If you are using a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or a Windows computer, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
  2. If the device cannot be restored and the message “An unknown error has occurred [error number]” appears, follow the instructions in this article.

If the error message continues to appear, try the following:

Make sure your device connects to Apple servers.

The appearance of error 1671 means that the computer is downloading the necessary software. Wait for the download to finish and try again.

If you receive a message about one of the following errors, your computer may not be able to connect to Apple servers or your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

  • 17, 1638, 3014, 3194, 3000, 3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3015, 3194, 3200
  • “An error occurred while loading the software.”
  • “The device is not supported for the requested assembly.”

Follow these steps.

The appearance of error 4037 means that it is impossible to update the device using a computer, because it is password protected and has not been unlocked for updating or recovery. Unlock the device and try again. Find out what to do if you don’t remember the password.

Apple Pay Failure or Inaccessibility Message

  • If you receive error message 9, follow the instructions in this article.
  • If error message 2, 4, 6, or 1611 appears, check third-party software for security. Then check the connection via USB.
  • If the error message continues to appear, contact Apple Support.

Checking USB Connections

If you receive error message 4005, 4013, or 4014, follow the instructions in this article.

If you receive a message about one of the errors listed below, check the connection via USB, USB cable, USB port or computer:

  • 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643–1650
  • 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009
  • Error message with the words “invalid response”

Follow these steps. After each action, check if the problem is resolved:

  1. Connect the USB cable that came with the device. If it is not available, use a different Apple USB cable.
  2. Connect the device to another USB port on the computer. It does not have to be a port on the keyboard.
  3. Connect the device to a USB port on another computer.
  4. If the error message continues to appear, check for other USB problems, third-party software for security, and then the hardware.

If one of the errors listed below may indicate a hardware problem.

  • 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16
  • 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 56
  • 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, 1669

Check for obsolete or modified software

The appearance of error 1015 or the message “Unable to find the required resource” may indicate the presence of unauthorized modifications of the software (breaking the firmware). It may also mean that an attempt is being made to install an earlier version of iOS (downgrade).

To restore a device with the latest software version, activate recovery mode.
