Appearance and how not to spoil the bracelet case
Visually, the bracelet has not changed much. It has become a few millimeters larger, but you will only notice this in direct comparison. Slightly changed the position of the sensors.
Mi Band 6, like the previous models of the series, is made of high-quality plastic, which remains like new even after active wear. The bracelet counts swimming pools well and accurately. Except when I swam on my back without using my hands. Then the bracelet believed that I swam not 25 meters, but 50. The Mi Watch Lite did not make such a mistake. But overall I am very pleased. You can swim, and the bracelet counts the distance and shows the time. And even tries to give the SWOLF index by counting the strokes. Accordingly, I have the tools to progress and swim more efficiently.

For example, when I first started swimming, I swam half a kilometer in 20 minutes, now I quite cheerfully swim 20 pools in 12.5 minutes. And it would be great if you could observe some dynamics in a visual form.
Conclusion: Should You Buy Mi Band 6?
If this is your first bracelet, then, of course, it is worth it. The thing is cool and really helps with sports. Yes, and it motivates quite well, so, I got carried away with the performance of the PAI index by 100%. The matter, frankly, is not easy, since it is required to accelerate the pulse to control values, which in my case are quite high. For example, after half an hour of playing volleyball, a girl’s PAI increased by 30 points, and I got only 2 points.
If you are the owner of Mi Band 4, then it might be worth it. In the new bracelet, the screen is larger, and the sensors can do the most, and most importantly, they are more accurate. So, in my Mi Band 4 NFC, I can’t clearly swim in the pool. The bracelet lies, and sometimes for some reason simply refuses to count the floated.
Mi Band 5 owners need not worry. Although if you want a big screen and an oxygen sensor, then you can treat yourself.
Considering the rumors about cooperation with Mastercard and the possibility of launching an NFC version of the bracelet, it may be worth delaying the purchase. Although here you should evaluate your strengths. Now the bracelet costs 3,990 rubles. The version with NFC (similar to the Mi Band 4/4 TAS) will cost 1,000 rubles more, that is, 5,000 rubles. Appearance and ergonomics

The NFC version only works in China so far, although a global version of the NFC bracelet has also been discussed. At the same time, Mi Band 6 is a little more expensive than its predecessors, but remains within the budget fitness bracelet.
Screen, interfaces and control
The display has become one of the most significant changes. He added not only in diagonal, but also in pixel density: 326 ppi versus 287 ppi on the Mi Band 5. In addition, the brightness has also grown a little. 450 nits are declared, which is approximately true. There is no auto brightness; manual setting only. In the bright sun, there will be no problems with the readability of the display, although more brightness would also not hurt.
The screen size also had a positive effect on the interface: the elements have generally become larger, which means they are better visible and easier to manage. Of course, in Mi Band 6, the touch control button had to be abandoned, now all navigation is done with swipes. A light touch is enough to turn on the display, swipe sideways to switch between the main screen, music and weather, swipe up or down for menus and settings.
The readability of the text is excellent, SMS notifications are visible well (very convenient to watch SMS for 2-factor authentication. no need to look for the smartphone itself).
Among the functions there is also a “flashlight”. a white screen at maximum brightness, which, in principle, should help in complete darkness. All main features are available in a list after swiping down.
The main screen can be interactive (for example, the default bracelet screen), with buttons for quick access to the main monitoring screens. PAI, activity status, sleep, etc., or static, just displaying the main parameters. Skins can be downloaded from the Mi Fit app. there are quite a few variations available. True, a maximum of three skins can be stored in the local memory of the bracelet.
In practice, the main default skin is one of the most convenient. it displays progress on the main indicators in the form of stripes filled with color, and by touching you can go to the full statistics on them (this is visual and convenient). But in custom templates, it is possible to set your own image on the cover, upload it from your smartphone.
The Mi Band 6 is controlled, of course, by the same Mi Band application from Xiaomi. Each function and all work scenarios are configured in it in detail: the number and frequency of measurements, vibration (and with the ability to manually set the pattern). It is easy to understand it, everything is intuitive and clear.
Monitoring of heart rate and stress level can be adjusted according to the required frequency of measurements, which will affect the accuracy of statistics. In addition, the bracelet can analyze sleep and there is even a function for monitoring the quality of breathing during sleep, although it is still in beta test mode.
In Mi Fit, you can view the data collected by the bracelet in detail. They are visualized on charts, it is convenient to interpret them and adjust your mode. The level of stress is determined quite plausibly. it is minimal during sleep and increases during work and training. Having set your parameters, you can also calculate tasks for yourself according to the level of activity, set goals and achieve them. the bracelet will signal this.
Very detailed statistics are available for sleep. the bracelet recognizes the phases of sleep, the moments of awakening and does this (according to subjective sensations) very accurately. The heart rate sensor works great, it has clearly improved its accuracy compared to previous models.
Statistics are also available for different periods of time. you can see how you slept on average last month, and what changes have occurred at the moment.
When discharging, Mi Band 6 gives a signal by vibration and messages on the display. This happens at a charge level of 5-10%. The battery capacity of the model is 250 mAh, and charging from the USB port of the PC takes about 2 hours (up to 50% in 30 minutes). At the same time, the current progress is displayed on the screen.
The autonomy of the bracelet mainly depends on the frequency of measurements of the sensors. the pulse, for example, can be measured every minute. If you turn on the maximum frequency plus add round-the-clock stress monitoring, automatic detection of training and analysis of the quality of sleep and breathing, then the bracelet will last about 6-7 days. Which is generally quite normal for a fitness bracelet, given the increased functionality and large display.
If most of the functions are turned off or the minimum frequency of measurements is set, then the Mi Band 6 will be able to last up to 10-12 days.

One of the innovations of Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is an improved workout recognition system, many new types have been added. The essence of the function is that the bracelet itself recognizes the type of training and begins to measure the time, pace, pulse or number of repetitions. The history of training is saved, but the Mi Fit application does not conduct analytics on them. The accuracy of the bracelet here is not always sufficient, but it is clearly better than that of the early Mi Band. The repetition counters turned out to be especially convenient in practice. you can listen to music during a workout without getting hung up on constant counting. A pleasant difference from the Mi Band 5 was the availability of a training log on the bracelet itself.
The wearing comfort of the Mi Band 6 is unchanged. True, the bracelet is still not very suitable for a thin wrist: due to the straight shape and the decent length of the capsule, it will not make good contact with the skin. In general, the main analysis tool for the bracelet is the calculation of the PAI physical activity index. It is he who acts as the main parameter, more complex than a simple counter of steps or calories.
There is also a separate training mode with track building, which are launched from the application. For this, the GPS transmitter of the connected smartphone is used. It works quite accurately, the movement is fixed correctly. When the workout is turned on, the bracelet display remains active and the timer with pause and stop buttons is turned on.
The Mi Band 6 comes in Xiaomi branded bright packaging. It is very compact. Inside fits the bracelet itself with a strap, a manual book and a magnetic charging cable with a USB connector.
There are also many color options for bracelet straps on sale, which are quite inexpensive. so the accessory can be adjusted to individual style.

Setting on the bracelet
Let’s talk about the most significant settings. In the future, we advise you to study the menu yourself, there are a lot of customization options.
You should start by setting up the dial. Hold your finger on the active display (numbers), then you will see a list of watch faces loaded into the tracker. You can change them by swiping up or down.
Next, click the gear below. In the widget editing mode, click on them to change the type. To complete editing, use the touch button.
Let’s move on to the settings. They are called by swiping on the active dial from the bottom up (the beginning of the list) or from the top down (the end of the list).
Status, PAI, Heart Rate, Notifications, Stress Level, Breathing, Cycles, Events, Weather, Workout, Advanced.
Here we can set the time when notifications will be silenced. There is an automatic mode, for a certain amount of time and at the very bottom there is a user setting. There you can set a specific time (for example, night) when this mode will be activated automatically.
By default, the brightness is set to medium, but many people find it lacking. Be sure to try to adjust the level that is comfortable for you.
If you notice accidental clicks while wearing the bracelet, you can turn on the lock screen. You will need to swipe to access the controls.
The display time can be extended up to 10 seconds, which is convenient when reading activity indicators.
In the August update 188.8.131.52, the automatic activity detection feature was added. If you make active movements within 2-5 minutes and the bracelet detects an increase in heart rate, then you are invited to choose one of the sports for more accurate calculations. This function should be renamed to automatic activity detection.
Setting via Mi Fit
In the Mi Fit program, there are three tabs at the bottom:
- Workout. display of important parameters such as the number of steps, activity scores (PAI), stress levels and women’s cycles. By clicking on each parameter, you can see detailed statistics;
- Friends. the ability to add friends, compete in the results achieved;
- Profile. Manage connected devices and basic settings.
In the profile section, select the connected bracelet and get into a long settings menu. Consider the most necessary.
To set up notifications from applications and messengers, go to the “Notifications” item.
After choosing, do not forget to click “Save”. If you have only two Chinese and English in the list, then you have purchased the China (CN) version. How to add Russian language is written here.
You can set the response speed and schedule so that at night the bracelet on your arm does not interfere with sleep.
Initially, you need to enable heart rate tracking in the “Monitoring method” item. There we select the time for tracking and the frequency of measurements. It is possible to activate stress tracking.
Now we exit the bracelet settings and go to the “Profile” tab in Mi Fit. Open “Smart Analysis” and activate all options.
These are the basic settings that should be done before use. However, there are still many interesting features and tracker optimization possibilities.
To get started, your phone (Android or iPhone) must meet the technical requirements:
Before connecting the bracelet, check its performance by pressing the touch button on the front side. The screen should display a language selection or sync request.
If the tracker does not respond to pressing, connect it to the charger. A full charge takes 1.5 hours. According to the manufacturer’s recommendation for synchronization, the percentage of charge should be at least 50%.
- The bracelet is unable to work without synchronization, so let’s move on to the phone. It must have Bluetooth enabled. Open “Settings”. “Bluetooth” and activate the switch.
Mi Fit version can be any (except for very old ones), but we recommend downloading the newest one from Google Play or the App Store, this will help to avoid many problems.

- Select “Create an account”;
- Enter the country of residence, mail, password, confirmation code, accept the agreement and click “Register”;
- Fill out your profile and click “Done”.

In the process of connecting the bracelet to a smartphone, errors may occur. Consider the main ones.
- Pairing error. First, try to charge the bracelet, then reboot it through the settings and reboot the phone. This usually helps in most cases. As a last resort, you can try to change the version of Mi fit.
- Mi Fit update failed (Connect to Mi Fit to update again). The bottom line is that the bracelet, when first connected, tries to immediately update to the current firmware version and if the charge is less than 10%, then a similar error will appear and the “repeat” button will not help. The solution is simple. just charge your device.
- The phone does not see the tracker. Restart both gadgets, check if Bluetooth is enabled and what version is on your phone (should be at least 5.0).
- Error “Perform a reset of the bracelet.” In the bracelet menu in the “Advanced” section, find the reset item and perform it. If the error persists, delete the Mi Fit cache or reinstall the program. Otherwise, contact the seller, it may be a marriage or a fake.

The topic of defects in electronic devices for many experienced users (buyers) is as important as features and price. Sometimes a marriage can be fixed at home, and the price advantage forces you to take risks, and sometimes not. Most often, devices of not very well-known manufacturers suffer from a large number of marriages, just starting their struggle for buyers’ wallets. This includes the majority of Chinese brands that are sold on Internet sites under strange names for the Russian consumer and do not have a Russian certificate of conformity. However, there are also examples when marriage becomes a mass phenomenon with well-known brands. Most often this happens when the manufacturer is not doing well with the sales of his devices (for various reasons) and he starts saving both on components and on testing new models (hello, one well-known Japanese company).
There is another situation. when only one, less often several device models differ in an increased number of defects. In this case, we can talk about a miscalculation in the design. A vivid example of this is hot news about a Korean manufacturer, which at one time did not leave the news pages.
Potential buyers pay close attention to such information and, based on this, make a choice in favor or against the purchase.
In this case, the issue of the availability of a guarantee is especially acute, and this item should not be neglected.
But all this is true when choosing relatively expensive devices, such as phones, tablets or accessories, the purchase of which entails significant expenses, which cannot be ignored. If we are talking about electronics, which is perceived by many as an additional, optional and at the same time inexpensive accessory, then the risk of getting a defective device does not have such a strong influence on the purchase decision. An additional factor in favor of a positive decision is the purchase price through gray channels, which for gadgets in this group often turns out to be twice as low as compared to official sales channels.
The principle is already working here: even if you are not lucky, it’s not a pity. The buyer is willing to part with a small amount of money in exchange for significant risk-based savings.
In this case, I mean the Mi Band series of smart bracelets from Xiaomi, in which marriage reports have been appearing on the network since the release of the first generation and continue to appear to this day. over, judging by the specialized forums, one might get the impression that this phenomenon is not so rare, and even frequent. But not everything is so bad, let’s not forget about the volume of devices sold and about such a feature of our psyche, thanks to which, if everything is fine with you, then you will not write about it on the forums. over, the main, and perhaps the only claim to Xiaomi bracelets is that at one fine moment the gadget simply stops charging and does not show signs of life. Okay, aside from the lyrics, let’s move on to the practical part of today’s story.
Before considering resuscitation methods, for lack of reliable data on the causes of the malfunction, we will take it as an axiom that the main reason is a deep discharge of the battery, in which the controller puts the battery into storage mode to prevent the destruction of lithium. Due to its small size and capacity, such a battery may not have a reserve volume, which should subsequently allow the controller to “start” the device as soon as an external power source is connected. Therefore, the controller reserves the last crumbs of charge available in the main battery capacity in order to save this very battery, and they are no longer enough to start. At the very least, the methods that bring the device to life fit into this theory. Now about the methods of restoring functionality themselves, which will be listed in descending order of the risk of permanently killing the device.
Method one, the most controversial and dangerous. electric shock
The essence of this method is to completely reset the bracelet and reset the statistics on the controller.
To do this, it is proposed to use the most natural stun gun, albeit in miniature. As an execution tool, it is proposed to use a piezo element extracted from a conventional lighter. I think that many in childhood had fun by trying on each other and on themselves such an impromptu stun gun.
For the method to work, you just need to close the contacts of the bracelet with the contacts of the piezo element and shock the bracelet with current. After that, it is recommended to connect the bracelet to the charger and check its performance. In theory, the bracelet should work. start charging and then turn on.
It’s up to you to try or not, but personally I would not recommend this method, since the success rate here is 50 to 50. To do this, it is recommended to put the bracelet in the freezer (the colder the better) and leave it there for several hours, and preferably at night, so that it is thoroughly frozen and completely loses its charge.
After that, the bracelet must be taken out and left to heat up at room temperature for half an hour or an hour, in no case heating it with a hairdryer or on a battery. Rapid heating after freezing can lead to damage in the structure of electronic components, this should be known to everyone from a school physics course. After the bracelet has warmed up, we try to turn it on. This method has much more positive reviews on the network. Many who used this option wrote that after freezing, the bracelet began to charge and then turned on. I myself used this method after I received a first generation bracelet from AliExpress, which showed no signs of life. After freezing, the bracelet came to life.
The third way is scientific
It relates more to chemistry and physics than to electromechanics, and consists in speeding up a chemical reaction by raising the temperature. However, in this case, simply increasing the temperature is not enough. It should be combined with the creation of an electromagnetic field. Sounds scary. But in fact, everything is elementary. If the bracelet does not turn on after a full discharge, then to revive it, you should first leave it on charge for an hour or two, and then, removing it from the charge, quickly rub the capsule on a woolen cloth until it gets very hot and immediately connect it to the charger.
The bracelet should start accepting a charge. Apparently, during friction heating, the rate of chemical processes in the battery accelerates and additional energy is generated, which is enough for the controller to “allow” the device to start. Perhaps static electricity also plays a role, which occurs when the capsule is rubbed against a woolen cloth.
In any case, judging by the reviews on the network, the method is working and allows you to resuscitate a capsule that has gone into deep discharge.
The fourth and easiest option is waiting
This method is connected with the already familiar principle of completely discharging the battery to reset the data of the charge controller and then starting it, it will suit very patient users.
To use this method, it is necessary to leave the capsule alone for a long period of time, during which the battery must be guaranteed to use up the entire charge, thereby resetting the controller data. After that, it is recommended to simply put the capsule on charge. The waiting time in this case ranges from a couple of weeks to a month. The easiest way, which has its own positive reviews on the network. I think you can use it if the previous ones did not give a result, or if you don’t really need a bracelet at the moment and there is time to wait.
Here are some simple ways to bring Mi Band bracelets of different generations back to life, which at some point stopped showing signs of life. It is possible that none of the above methods will work, and then the choice will be small. try to repair the bracelet by disassembling it, or buy a new one. Personally, I came across both the need for repairs, which I once wrote about in the article Notes of the Master. Frankenstein, and with the need to revive the bracelets. And in all cases, the result was a working gadget.
Instead of a conclusion
In addition to cases of sudden death, Xiaomi bracelets have one bad feature. being tied to one account, in order to subsequently connect to another account, they require unlinking from the previous one. And often this becomes a real problem for a user who, during the initial setup, created an account, as they say, “from the bulldozer”, then safely forgot about it and, if he accidentally reset the settings or changed the phone, he was faced with the inability to connect a bracelet that did not untie it from the previous account.
For this case, there is also a solution. a special service application sent by the Chinese seller of the bracelet to one of its customers and part-time user of the w3bsit3-dns.com forum under the nickname rawin in response to the problem of unbinding from the account.
To untie the bracelet, you need to download the application file. After that, rename the downloaded file by deleting the numbers after the dot so that the extension has an APK ending, and install it. Then connect the bracelet to the phone using the Bluetooth system dialog. Launch the application, making sure that the connected bracelet and its mac-address are displayed in the application, tap on the line with the bracelet. Then in the window that opens, click on the bottom button, as in the screenshot.

Here are some simple ways to bring the bracelet back to life. And the unbinding method can also help in the case when the bracelet does not want to connect to your account, not only because of forgetfulness, but also for no apparent reason. because in this case there is a complete reset.
The company’s developers have provided the ability to connect the tracker to Apple devices, so before synchronizing the Mi Band 3 with the iPhone, you need to download a branded application from the App Store individually for the iOS system. Next, the Bluetooth protocol will be launched on the mobile device, and you need to register in the Xiaomi system, and then proceed to pair the devices. On the design of the tracker, a key is provided, clicking on which allows you to connect. At the end of the manipulations, the bracelet software will be updated through a mobile application.
When connecting, you need to take into account the iPhone model, since the ability to pair with Xiaomi bracelets is implemented from version 4S or newer, and too old devices do not require data transfer from mobile attributes. For modification 5 and 5S, an improved connection algorithm is used, and in more current models there is a competent exchange of information. Apple suggests using iOS software from 10.3.3 and newer for better performance.
If the tracker fails to synchronize or breaks often occur, then xiaomium.ru offers:

- Check if there are any problems caused by using Mi Band 3 with a different account;
- Keep a minimum distance between devices, as the developers recommend trying not to move the bracelet too far away from the smartphone during the pairing process.
Some users talk about difficulties in the process of synchronizing the tracker with an Apple phone, while using the BLE Scanner or Bluetooth Pair program to establish use, as they help find the device. You can synchronize using the standard functions of the phone, because you need to go to the Bluetooth menu, find the Mi Band 3 and try to pair. In case of errors or failures, it is advisable to contact the service or exchange for a new copy under the manufacturer’s warranty.
Upon completion of connecting the tracker to the iPhone, the owner can use many options:
- Receive mobile device alerts on the bracelet, which you can set yourself, and during an incoming call, the compact display shows the name of the caller and the ability to accept the call. All notifications come with a vibration signal;

- The availability of a smart alarm that is activated based on the user’s sleep, and integrated sensors perform heartbeat diagnostics to select the best wake-up time. Such an implementation has a positive effect on the owner’s well-being, as it is activated depending on the phase of sleep;
- The ability to view the current weather on the tracker display, which is regularly updated to match the information of the synchronized mobile device;
- Detection of a smartphone, activated by a separate option in the functionality of the bracelet, while it is necessary to keep the connection, and the result is manifested by the inclusion of a sound signal on the device.
Synchronization with Apple Health
The Mi Band 3 model allows you to transfer data using both Mi Fit and the Apple Health application;
- Enter the downloaded Mi Fit program;
- Go to the section for sending notifications;
- Select the sub-item “Health”, while the name of the category, in the absence of Russification, may be indicated by “Health”;
- Enable synchronous operation.
Some users additionally report that after downloading the Mi Fit proprietary solution for Xiaomi bracelets, a request for permission to access the service is displayed, while a separate window is displayed in which the owner grants permission or rejects the offer.
How to choose a smart home device?
The first thought is to look at them on retailer websites, but often they cannot be filtered by ecosystem, or they simply have outdated information. It is best to look directly at the manufacturers’ applications. For example, when adding a device in Yandex, you can immediately see a list of all supported devices from this manufacturer. Apple for HomeKit has a complete list on their website. Xiaomi in their application can also see the entire list for each region when adding.
In order not to make crutches with ESP32, I also recommend paying attention to Sonoff. They are also based on ESP and can be added to the Mi Home app.
In addition to the lamp, there is also an Aqara smart door lock in the corridor. It runs on batteries and supports a bunch of ways to open it, including HomeKit. This is almost the only HomeKit-enabled lock that can be found in Russia in free sale in most stores.

The bathroom already had a light fixture, so only a smart switch was purchased. The touch switches from Rubetek looked the most futuristic, and they also supported Alice. They also have unofficial (non-certified) HomeKit support, but it works so-so.

The bathroom also has an electric faucet, which I plugged in through a Yandex smart socket. Smart devices from Yandex (light bulb, IR remote control, sockets) are made on the basis of tuya, respectively, you can just buy tuya compatible devices. Interestingly enough, the sockets show the current voltage, which turned out to be as much as 240V instead of 220V.
Yandex.Station, unlike HomeKit, even supports washing machines, and more recently, irons, although the benefits of Alice in them are very doubtful.
Smart home iOS developer. Part 2
This article is a continuation of my story about smart home. There will be specific examples of my devices for HomeKit and Yandex smart home. I’ll tell you on what principles I chose and how I connected everything together.
Brief diagram of a smart home
The result was something like this. There is Homebridge on the Raspberry Pi and a plugin for it that helps to throw devices into Alice. The rest is already tied to what manufacturers of smart devices have come up with: Yandex.Station manages devices through the company’s servers, that is, with a voice command, it sends a request to the server, and it already sends a request to the device. If the device has built-in WI-FI, then it connects to the server directly. And in the case of small sensors, there is usually a special hub to which they are connected via ZigBee. HomeKit can manage devices locally, but we’ll talk about that later.
The first acquisition was Yandex.Station immediately after it appeared on the free market. Even then it was clear that it would become the center of a smart home. And there were no analogues of smart speakers in Russian at that time, and even now there are still few who can compare with it in terms of features. HomePod and other American speakers, of course, are better in all respects, except for one thing. the presence of the Russian language (at the moment, HomePod already supports Russian), so the original idea was to assemble a smart home completely based on Yandex.Station, since it already supported a sufficient number of third party manufacturers.
Luckily, there are some devices on the market that support both HomeKit and Alice. There are not many of them, but they were, therefore, if possible, such devices were bought so as not to fall out of the Apple ecosystem, having iPads, Macs and iPhones.
When enough devices have accumulated, it’s time to come up with scenarios. And then an unpleasant surprise awaited: automation through Yandex applications is very scarce, since Yandex does not support any sensors, and you can automate only by time or voice command. This killed the desire to continue building a smart home on Yandex and switch completely to HomeKit. Fortunately, HomeBridge was already configured for the LED strip in the kitchen, and it only remained to pull up a couple more lamps through the plug-ins. After that, I bought an additional HomePod Mini and began to buy devices only with HomeKit support.
I already had an LED strip that was powered by a power supply that converts 220V to 12V, and also bought several ESP32 for experimentation. It was necessary to put it all together and connect it to HomeKit, and for this I had to start HomeBridge somewhere. The choice fell on the Raspberry Pi 4 and a plugin that translated HomeKit requests to HTTP to the ESP32. She, in turn, opened the power switch based on the MOSFET transistor. And since the smart home for Alice was originally going to be, HomeBridge was additionally thrown into Yandex through the h-on plugin. I talked about the theoretical part in more detail in a previous article.
ESP32 with power key (early version without case)
As a transistor, a power key from Ampere was chosen. If you don’t really want to understand circuitry and soldering, then Amperka has a large selection of ready-made modules with strapping.
In addition to the LED strip in the kitchen, there is also a ceiling lamp from Philips Hue. Philips, or rather their division Signify, makes cool rgb lighting, which is popular in Russia. But for Europe, Philips also makes ceiling lights with shades of warm and cold light. And I could not pass by such a futuristic lamp:

Its price, of course, is also “European”, and the light turned out to be not as bright as we would like, but the external one clearly stands out against the background of Xiaomi lamps.
Smart kettles with Alice
HomeKit doesn’t have teapot support, but Alice does. True, their choice is still not as great as we would like. At the time of purchase, these were only Redmond teapots, now Polaris has also appeared.
The TV was also purchased with native support for Alice and AirPlay. However, Alice’s abilities are very limited. She can’t even turn on the TV after a few hours. Having gone through the forums after the purchase in an attempt to solve the problem and find the difference in TV models (Q70 vs Q77), it turned out that this is a limitation of cheaper TV models. The TV seems to disconnect from WI-FI after a few hours in standby mode and, accordingly, loses connection with Yandex.Station. I ended up just buying an IR remote for Alice. He has no problems with turning on, and the TV signal source can change.
AirPlay on the TV is supported by the second version. Now it is not added to HomeKit, as was the case with the first one, so turning it on / off with your voice will not work. Can only transfer video from phone.
Philips has its own TVs with cool backlighting that changes depending on the picture on the screen. But, unfortunately, Philips TVs do not support either AirPlay or Alice. But you can make the backlight with your own hands through Philips Hue Play or Gradient Lightstrip for TVs from other manufacturers.

However, from third-party TVs, you will not be able to receive a picture in real time, so this only works via HDMI. An HDMI Sync box is bought, into which HDMI is plugged and a cable goes from it to the TV. And accordingly, everything will work only if you watch Netflix from some Playstation 5, and not directly from TV.

I didn’t really want to buy a Sync box for 30k rubles, so I started looking for DIY solutions. And it is! Harmonize project. An HDMI splitter and a capture card are bought (for a total of 5 thousand), a python script is launched on the same Raspberry Pi and magic happens:
Thanks to Vastrik and his goof house, I learned that there are trendy startups making HomeKit devices like EVE and Fibaro. And they have smart thermostats for battery valves. The first one I bought was EVE Thermo. a great thing, it works flawlessly, but the dimensions are very impressive. EVE also has a cool HomeKit app.
For a change and because of the smaller size, a Fibaro Heat Controller was bought in the bedroom. Of the features, it has a remote temperature sensor, respectively, it measures the temperature not near the battery, but where you place the sensor. But this thermostat is constantly decalibrating and losing connection with HomeKit. It turned out to be a massive problem and it is not clear what to do about it.

In addition to Philips Hue and Eve, there is also a cool startup called Nanoleaf that makes light panels in various shapes. In the updated version, panels of different shapes can be assembled into one shape, hexagons, triangles, for example.
At the time of the assembly of the smart home, I worked at Haier and we were writing an application for a smart home, so there was an opportunity to see how a smart home works in large companies. To my surprise, the new version of the Haier smart home in Europe was built on the same ESP32, only adapted for industrial needs.
All experiments at work were carried out with an air conditioner: it was possible to reflash its ESP32 to its own firmware and add HomeKit support there, since the firmware from foreign colleagues did not support it. And it turned out to be not so difficult:
The firmware was made on the basis of a ready-made library from Espressif, which I wrote about in a previous article. Of course, this decision will not reach production, but I can easily repeat the same with my home air conditioner from Haier. In Russia, it is somehow difficult with air conditioners that support HomeKit out of the box. There are only those who support Yandex.Station.
The HomeKit camera turned out to be a good thing. You can watch the broadcast right from the Home app on your iPhone and save your videos to iCloud. It can be configured so that the camera does not shoot if someone is at home (more on that in the next section), but at the same time the motion sensor, which is involved in automation scenarios, works.
I chose a camera from Aqara, which also acts as a hub for my motorized roller blinds. Aqara is a Xioami sub-brand for the European and American markets with a separate application, so you don’t have to worry about regions in Mi Home when buying.
There is also a smart Xiaomi Mop P vacuum cleaner. I advise you to buy vacuum cleaners with LiDaR and the ability to build a map of the premises. Of the interesting things in Xioami vacuum cleaners, you can change the voice acting to “leather bastards”.
HomeKit settings for added users
The most suitable thing in HomeKit is the ability to add people to your smart home (you can also in Mi Home). If someone comes to visit, you can give full control over all devices, or give only partial access (see screenshot). You can even customize scripts for specific people. face recognition or iPhone location.
HomeKit does not have separate hubs. To control your devices when you are not at home, you need to purchase an iPad, Apple TV or HomePod mini. You can have several at once so as not to lose Connect if the iPad sits down, for example.
A “tablet” from Xioami was bought for the bedroom on the ceiling without native support for HomeKit, but it turned out that there are already new models of the same lamp with support. In the hallway, I did not make such a mistake and immediately bought a new model of the lamp, and in the bedroom I had to pass it through HomeBridge.

HomeKit supports smart extension cords. And because of the again futuristic look, I bought an extension cord from Rubetek, but it, like the switch, does not work normally with HomeKit
You can automate both roller blinds and sliding curtains. In the hall, the choice fell on the first option, and in the bedroom on the second. A motor from Xiaomi was bought for the bedroom with a special cornice for it.

When buying smart devices from Xioami, you need to pay attention to the region for which this device is intended and buy the appropriate hub. Yandex.Station supports both the Chinese region and Russia (maybe even both at the same time, if the account has devices for both regions), but in the first case there will be calls to the Chinese server, which may affect the processing time of Alice’s commands.

Hue Bridge was also hung in this room for remote control of Hue lamps, and it does not have WI-FI (and Xiaomi does!) And it connects only via cable to the router. But the router is located under the ceiling and pulling a cable from it is not the most pleasant experience, so it was decided to buy a repeater / bridge from Asus. By the way, Hue Bridge actually has a WI-FI module, it’s just disabled, but you can enable it through hacks.
This was a list of the main devices of my smart home. There are a couple more lamps and sensors that I didn’t mention, but they are needed mainly for automation scenarios, and this. topic for a separate article.
Most likely, my example of a smart home will be outdated in a couple of years. manufacturers do not stand still. Yandex showed Yandex.Station 2 with multiroom support and built-in Zigbee. Now it will be possible to combine several stations together to listen to music and control devices without contacting the manufacturer’s servers, as was the case with Amazon Alexa. And the Russian language has already been added to the HomePod.
I also have high hopes for Matter. Yandex has now also joined the alliance.
