Connect Computer To Computer Via Network Cable

In today’s article, we will consider a situation where we will need to connect a laptop and a PC between each other for the equivalent exchange of information. In principle, a laptop is the same computer, so we just need to create a network between two computers, but more on that later.

At first, I would like to say that a laptop is not a flash drive and you just can’t connect it to a USB connector, we will have to make a full network. So let’s get started.

Connect two devices

The first thing you need is an Internet cable (twisted pair), crimped on both sides, it looks like this:

Now we find the network card connector on the back of the computer:

And a similar connector on the back of the laptop:

We connect the two network cards with each other by cable and go to the settings of the Windows operating system.

OS setup

In order to connect the laptop to the computer correctly, you need to make these devices have different names, different IP addresses and one workgroup.

In order to change the name of the computer and the workgroup, go to “Start” and right-click on the item “Computer”, from the drop-down menu select the item “Properties”

In the window that opens on the left, select the item “Advanced system parameters”:

In the window that opens, in the “Computer Name” tab, click on the “Change” button:

If necessary, change the name of the computer and workgroup:

Now let’s deal with ip-addresses and other network settings. Everything that I will describe will need to be performed both on a computer and on a laptop.

Right-click on the network status icon (near the clock) and select “Network and Sharing Center.”

Next, select in the left column of the window “Change adapter settings”:

We are looking for our connection on the local network and click on it with the right mouse button, select the “Properties” item.

We look for the component “Internet Protocol Version 4” in the list, select it and click on the “Properties” button

We put the switch in the “Use the following IP address” position and enter the IP address., and the subnet mask This we enter for the computer:

For a laptop, we just set a slightly different address:, the subnet mask remains the same:

Checking the created link

In theory, after these settings, the connection between the computer and the laptop should be established. Let’s check if this is the case and ping the network. To do this, click on the WinR key combination on the PC and in the window that opens write the cmd command.

At the command prompt, enter the command ping (the ip address of the laptop, which we indicated above). If there is no packet loss, and you get normal responses, then everything is in order:

If there is packet loss, then there is no connection, and you will have to disable the Windows firewall or another firewall that you have installed.

Also, go to the “Network and Sharing Center” again and in the left column click on the item “Change advanced sharing settings”

There, in the “Home or Work” section, we include all the parameters, as shown in the screenshot:

And also disable sharing with password protection. If this is not done, then you will not be able to connect the computer to the laptop, where the Windows operating system has accounts with passwords (How to set a password on Windows 7).

Create Sharing

After all this is done, you can’t just drag and drop information from a laptop to a computer and vice versa. To do this, you must open shared access to the hard disk partitions or individual folders.

To the hard drive partition

To open access to the hard disk partition, you need to right-click on it and select the item “Sharing. Advanced Settings.” from the drop-down list:

In the “Access” tab, click on the “Advanced Settings.” button

We put a bird near the item “Share this folder.” If you want full access to this disk from another computer with the possibility of changing information, you can additionally click on the “Permissions” button and put a bird in front of “Full Access”. And in the main window, click on the “Apply” button and click “OK.”

We look, now the icon of our section has slightly changed, two people appeared near it. This means that sharing is open.

To folder

To open shared access to a folder, right-click on it, select “Sharing. Specific Users”:

We add all users and click on the “Sharing” button. If you want the information to be able to be changed in this folder from another computer, then we set all users the “Read and Write” rights.

We are given a message that the folder is open for sharing:

We do all the manipulations described above both on the computer and on the laptop (I repeat).

We go from one device to another

Everything is set up, now it remains only to figure out how to get from a laptop to a computer and vice versa. To do this, go to the explorer and look for the “Network” item in the right corner, or just in the explorer we enter the IP address of the computer to which we want to connect as follows: If everything is in order, then we should see the folders and disks shared by us:

If you forgot to disable sharing with password protection, then you will see the following window:

In this case, either create a password for the user or disable sharing with password protection.

That’s all, all the basic nuances of how to connect a laptop to a computer through a cable, I explained.

Video: Connect Computer To Computer Via Network Cable

Sometimes you want to watch a movie or play games on a large TV screen, as the monitor is relatively small and your eyes quickly get tired of it. In addition, I do not want to wait until the film of interest is shown on one of the leading channels. In this case, they resort to a procedure such as connecting a TV to a computer using a LAN cable. This allows you to even watch IPTV on a TV and not pay for cable or satellite TV. To do this, first of all, you need a TV that supports DLNA or Ethernet technology. This article will discuss how to connect the router to the TV and how to connect the TV to the computer through the router via LAN cable.

What you need to connect a TV to a computer

To connect the TV to the router via a cable, you must have the following things:

  • A TV whose board has a connector for inserting a cable of the type RJ-54 (LAN);
  • A personal computer or laptop on which there is a network card;
  • Network cable for LAN.

Connect Computer To Computer Via Network Cable

Important! Integrated network cards are not suitable in the second paragraph, but if you do not need to maintain an Internet connection all the time, then they will do. The computer cable should also be of sufficient length, since in the case of a short wire you will have to move and carry one of the devices.

Realization of connection of a computer with a TV via LAN

If all the parts are assembled, then you can proceed to the connection. To do this, plug one end of the cable into the RJ45 slot of the computer, and the other into the same LAN port on the TV. Most often, it is located on the back of the TV, where power, speakers and other attributes are connected.

After connecting, it is configured. To do this, you can use specialized programs to broadcast video and audio from a computer to a TV. Often they are specific and suitable for setting up TV from only one manufacturer. One of the software that works well on many devices is Home Media Server. It contains many flexible settings, as well as a function that allows you to broadcast IPTV directly to the TV.

It is very easy to work with software: to load a movie into it, just drag it from the desktop or any other folder into the program window. After that, everything is ready for broadcast and it remains to click the “Start” button. A window will appear on the TV with source selection, in which you should select “AllShare HMS”. This completes the setup. The interface for selecting the desired clip appears on the TV.

Important! The software allows you to not only view videos and broadcast them on the TV screen. Also available are viewing photos from a hard drive or flash drive, as well as listening to music.

Watching IPTV on a TV from a computer

Viewing IPTV is a little more difficult to implement, but also quite realistic even for a beginner. First you need to download and install the VLC Media Player player program from the official website of the developer (taking into account that the HMS is installed and configured beforehand).

It is worth noting that another player is also suitable, but VLC is the best solution and it is really necessary, since Server will take a video stream from it. After installing the player, you need to bind it to the Home Media Server. For this:

  • HMS starts;
  • Going to Settings. Media Resources. Internet Resources;
  • In a special column, the path to the folder in which the player was previously installed is registered;
  • In the folder where IPTV is installed from the provider, there is a file with the extension.M3u;
  • The file is transferred to the program window, namely to the Internet TV folder located to the left of the main interface;
  • A transition is made along the path “Settings”. “Transcoder”. “Transcoding Profile”;
  • It selects the incoming stream “Internet TV”;
  • HMS reboots, and a list of available channels appears in the Internet TV folder on the TV.

Important! If there was no.M3u file in the folder with IPTV installed, then you can find and download it from the Internet on the website of your own or someone else’s Internet provider

Choice of a router

Some people will then have a question: how to connect the TV to the router via a LAN cable, and which router to choose for this. Fortunately, there are very few problems that may arise when choosing a router. All modern routers cope with this with a bang. Therefore, if a router is already at home, then it is quietly suitable for connection. The main rule: a router must contain more than one LAN port for connecting external consuming devices to connect a TV and a personal computer or laptop.

Wiring diagram

The circuit of connecting a TV to a computer via a LAN cable through a router does not carry any complexity. Everything is standard here:

  1. Turn on the router by connecting it to the outlet using the power cord;
  2. Connect the provider’s WAN cable, through which the Internet with the router is fed through a special WAN socket;
  3. Take one LAN-cable and connect it to the computer and the router through the RJ-45 connectors on the network card and on the back of the device, respectively;
  4. Take the second LAN cable and connect it to the TV and the router through the RJ-45 connectors on the back of the TV and a free port on the back of the router;

Important! If you need to connect a TV through a router and branch the network, remember that you will need another LAN cable of suitable length.

Computer Settings

To work on the second screen, in some cases it is worth making settings on a computer or laptop. To do this:

  1. Click RMB on a free area of the desktop and select “Screen Resolution”;
  2. Select the option “Multiple screens”. “Expand screens”;
  3. As a result, two independent screens will appear, on one of which you can start watching a movie.

The configurations described above are more suitable when connecting TV and PC via HDMI and VGA cables. With the advent of new ways to connect and Smart TV, more and more people are starting to use Ethernet slots and broadcast movies and other content to a TV using Wi-Fi routers.

With a LAN connection, the only setting may be to register a static IP address and subnet mask. To do this, you must:

  • Go to “Network and Sharing Center”. “Change adapter settings”;
  • Select an active network and click on it with RMB, choosing “Properties”;
  • In the components, select the TCP / IPv4 protocol and set the address and mask. For example, and;
  • Save changes
  • Go to the “Access” tab in the same window;
  • Check the box next to “Allow other network users to use an Internet connection.”;
  • Save changes.

TV settings

There should not be any special problems on the part of the TV. The only caveat is that DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) must be configured on the network device to which the TV connects. If it is not configured, you will have to register all the configurations on the TV yourself.

For basic setup:

  1. Go to the TV configuration and select “Network”. “Network Settings”;
  2. Set up the connection by setting the TV IP-address from the same subnet. For example, and the subnet;
  3. View and configure additional parameters or just click “Next”;
  4. Save settings.

Thus, questions were considered: how to fork the Internet cable to a computer and a TV and how to distribute a Wi-Fi network to a TV via LAN. Connecting two devices together on a router to view content is quite easy and simple. Over, it is also interesting, because it is very comfortable to watch movies on the big screen and not wait until they are shown on any television channel.
