Windows 7 is installed on the usual “average” laptop by modern standards, with an IntelHD graphics card (maybe plus some discrete Nvidia), after the system is installed and the desktop appears for the first time, the user notices that the screen has become it’s small in comparison with what it was (note: i.e. the screen has a lower resolution). In the properties of the screen. the resolution is set to 800 × 600 (as a rule), and the other cannot be set. And what to do in this case?

In this article I will give a solution to a similar problem (so that there is nothing tricky here :)).

DECISION

This problem, most often, occurs precisely with Windows 7 (or XP). The fact is that their kit does not have (more precisely, there are much fewer of them) built-in universal drivers (which, by the way, are in Windows 8, 10. which is why there are significantly fewer problems with drivers when installing these OSs). over, this also applies to drivers for other components, not only cards.

To see which drivers have problems, I recommend opening the device manager. The easiest way to do this is to use the Windows control panel (just in case, see the screen below on how to open it in Windows 7).

Next, pay attention to the “adapters” tab: if “Standard VGA graphics adapter” is present in it, then this confirms that you do not have drivers in the system (because of this, low resolution and nothing fits on the screen :))

Important! Please note that the icon indicates that there is no driver for the device at all. and it does not work! For example, the screenshot above shows that, for example, there is no driver even for an Ethernet controller (i.e. for a network card). This means that the driver for the card will not be downloaded, because there is no network driver, but you cannot download the network driver, because there is no network In general, that node is still!

The easiest way to solve this problem.. this is to get the driver disk that came with your PC (laptops, however, they don’t give such disks :)). And with it, everything is quickly restored. Below, I will consider the option of what can be done and how to restore everything even in cases where your network card does not work and there is no Internet to download even a network driver.

1) How to restore the network.

Absolutely without the help of a friend (neighbor). will not do. In extreme cases, you can use a regular phone (if you have internet on it).

Essence of the decision in that there is a special program 3DP Net (the size of which is about 30 MB), which contains universal drivers for almost all types of network adapters. Those. roughly speaking, having downloaded this program, installed it, it will select the driver and the network card will work for you. You can download everything else from your PC.

2) Auto-install drivers. useful / harmful?

If you have Internet access on your PC, then auto-installing drivers can be a good solution. In my practice, of course, I met both with the correct operation of such utilities and with the fact that sometimes they updated drivers so that it would be better if they didn’t do anything at all

But in the overwhelming majority of cases, updating the drivers passes, nevertheless, correctly and everything works. And the advantages of using them are a number of:

  1. Save a lot of time on the definition and search for drivers for specific equipment;
  2. can automatically find and update drivers to the latest version;
  3. in case of unsuccessful update. a similar utility can roll back the system to the old driver.

In general, for those who want to save time, I recommend the following:

  3. Perform using one of the programs above, search and update the “firewood” on your PC!
  4. In case of force majeure, just roll back the system using the restore point (see point-1 a little above).

3) Determine the model of the card.

If you decide to act manually, then before downloading and installing drivers, you need to decide what kind of card model you have installed in your PC (laptop). The easiest way to do this is to use special utilities. One of the best, in my humble opinion (also free) is Hwinfo (screenshot below).

Here, as it were, there is nothing to comment on. Knowing your OS (for example, Windows 7, 8, 10), a card model or a laptop model. all you need to do is go to the manufacturer’s website and download the required driver (By the way, it’s not always the newest driver. the best. Sometimes it’s better to install the older one. because it is more stable. But it’s rather difficult to guess here, just in case I recommend you download a couple of driver versions and try it experimentally ).

4) Installing the driver and setting the “native” screen resolution

As a rule, it is nothing complicated. just run the executable file and wait for the end of the installation. After rebooting the computer, the screen blinks a couple of times and everything starts to work, as before.
