ASUS X540YA laptop. The disk was originally mapped as MBR.
Using the Paragon Drive Manager program on the service disk from Sergei Strelec, I converted it to GPT.
I installed various systems on it, experimented. Windows 8.1, Windows 10.
Always loaded from a flash drive. Over, in the BIOS menu for a connected flash drive, 2 boot options were always available. MBR mode and UEFI mode.
But for such a markup, instead of one system partition (as in MBR), when installing on the hard disk, 4 of them were created: a backup partition, a UEFI bootloader partition, a MSR (Microsoft Reserved) backup partition and the largest partition with operating system files (C :).
When saving a partition image using various backup programs, sometimes a copy was obtained that could not be restored.
This was one of the reasons to return the disk type to MBR. Using the same program, Paragon Drive Manager returned the MBR markup. For Windows 8.1, in general, we managed to make only one system partition. It would seem that everything is fine. But it was not there!
Now for the flash drive, only UEFI mode remains available for boot! For many operations, including backup, there is nothing to worry about. But it became impossible to install a new system. The installer states that since the installation disk is booted in UEFI mode, it can only be installed on a GPT disk. And since the disk is MBR, you first need to convert it to GPT, and then install the system.
But I don’t need this! I specifically converted the disk to MBR format! In addition, I deal with many computers, both laptops and stationary. But nowhere is there anything like it! Everywhere there is an opportunity to boot in both MBR and UEFI mode, regardless of what type of hard disk partition I have at the moment.
And so I am tormented by the question: is it something I do not understand or is the BIOS in the laptop so unfinished?

BIOS does not see a USB flash drive

Perhaps the most common problem with booting from a USB drive. We already have an article on this problem and its solutions, so first of all we recommend that you follow it. However, on some laptop models (for example, ASUS X55A) there are settings in the BIOS that need to be disabled. This is done like this.

  • We go into the BIOS. Go to the “Security” tab, go to the “Secure Boot Control” item and disable it by selecting “Disabled”. To save the settings, press the F10 key and restart the laptop.
  • Boot into BIOS again, but this time select the “Boot” tab. In it we find the “Launch CSM” option and enable it (the “Enabled” position). Press F10 again and restart the laptop. After these actions, the flash drive should be correctly recognized.

The second reason for the problem is typical for flash drives with recorded Windows 7. It is an incorrect partitioning scheme. For a long time, the MBR format was the main one, but with the release of Windows 8, GPT took the leading position. To deal with the problem, overwrite your flash drive with the Rufus program, choosing in the “Scheme and type of system interface” option “MBR for computers with BIOS or UEFI”, and set the file system to “FAT32”.

The third reason is problems with the USB port or the flash drive itself. Check the connector first. Connect the drive to a different port. If the problem is observed, check the USB stick by inserting it into a known working connector on another device.

    They brought me a laptop ASUS X541N the other day. They asked to install Windows 10 or Windows 7 on it. I have a multiboot flash drive with different versions of operating systems, which I made a couple of years ago. I plugged this USB flash drive into the laptop, turned it on and began to press the Esc key on the keyboard. I thought I could quickly manage the Windows installation, but it didn’t work.
    After pressing the Esc key, a window appeared asking you to select a boot device. But my flash drive was not on the list. Only the laptop hard drive was present. I went to the “Enter Setup” item in this window. Before me on the screen appeared the modern UEFI BIOS of the ASUS laptop. BIOS Utility. EZ Mode:

    Over, in the UEFI BIOS, my flash drive was displayed in the “USB Port” section, but it was not in the “Boot Priority” section. This meant that I could not select it as a boot device and install Windows from it.

    I switched to “Advance Mode”.     But in this section there was no and did not appear the “Launch CSM” option (and no other SIMilar, for example: “CSM”, “CSM Boot”, “CSM OS”, “Legacy BIOS”). In other ASUS notebook models, after activating this option in the Boot section, it became possible to boot from a USB flash drive.

    Now I’ll tell you how I solved this problem and still installed Windows on an ASUS laptop:

    Modern laptops have UEFI BIOS. In order to boot without problems from a USB flash drive in UEFI mode and install Windows on a GPT disk. This flash drive must be formatted in the FAT32 file system.

    Therefore, if the BIOS of your computer does not recognize your USB flash drive as bootable, then first of all check what file system it has.

    I inserted my flash drive into another computer. I went to its “Properties” and saw that it was formatted in the NTFS file system:

    Then I just cleaned it up and recreated the bootable Windows USB stick in the FAT32 file system.

    After that, I reinserted it into the ASUS laptop. Turned it on. Pressed the Esc key on the keyboard several times. A window appeared with a proposal to choose a boot device. And this time, in addition to the laptop hard drive, there was also my USB flash drive. I selected it and started installing Windows.     Hello! Yesterday I got my hands on a new laptop ASUS X501A. It was necessary to install Windows, and everything you need, turnkey shorter :). I wrote down a bootable USB flash drive using UltraISO and it worked. Why so, I did not understand :).

    We go into the BIOS. For me, and most likely for you, this is the F2 key (if not, then try DEL too). Press it immediately after starting the laptop.

    Next, go to the Boot tab and select the Hard Drive BBS Priorities item.

    As you can see (in the screenshot below). I have a hard drive under Boot Option # 1. And under Boot Option is a flash drive. You need to install a flash drive under # 1.

    To do this, click on Boot Option and select the USB flash drive. And the hard drive will automatically take second place.

    You can return to the previous menu by pressing Esc and you will see that a USB device is installed under Boot Option # 1.

    Remember to press F10 and Yes to save the settings.

    Everything, after restarting the laptop, boot from the USB flash drive should go (if it is created correctly).

    If you did everything like me, then most likely, during the installation of Windows, after the reboot, the boot from the USB flash drive will start. And you need from drive C to continue the installation. I just pulled out the flash drive at the time of the reboot. And when the download started from the C drive, I inserted it back (although, it seems like it is no longer needed for installation, the files have already been copied, but I could be wrong).

    Possible problems installing Windows 7 from a USB 3.0 flash drive

    You may have noticed that my USB drive has a new USB 3.0 interface. And Windows 7 does not support USB 3.0, special drivers needed.

    If the drive itself is USB 3.0, then it’s okay. Just plug it into a USB 2.0 port on your laptop and everything will work.
